the sean combs verdict is making people confront the dangers of the liberal feminist line on sex work before my very eyes. combs’ defenders say consent absolves him of any wrongdoing (which the court agrees), and the people unhappy with his acquittals are struggling to not say you can’t purchase consent, or that the presence of consent doesn’t preclude the presence of (sexual) exploitation. what radical feminists and communists have been saying for decades...😬
the mere act of consenting to an act of labor does not negate the power dynamics that mediate said act of labor. consent does not render exploitation impossible. you can absolutely love your job, agree to the terms of employment, and still be exploited based on the power dynamics mediating said job. the liberal feminist line on sex work, which is the liberal line on labor in general, is that consent precludes exploitation. this ideology obfuscates abusers like sean combs and renders their violence invisible.
