Hello!

Time for a new updated post! I'm an artist and post my work fairly often, but also reblog a bunch of other stuff I find interesting. Plushies, art, animals and fantasy, botany and ecology, etc.

As an artist I specialize in sculpture and textile art, specifically realistic, floppy, poseable soft sculptures (plush) made with faux fur fabrics. I love to create life-size replicas of real species and natural color variations, but I enjoy fantasy as well. Because my passion lies outside of mundane life, I do not make domestic animals. (No pet portraits, sorry!) I also have a full-time job outside my art which pays the bills, which means my art output is relatively low right now.

Availability:

Sales: I am not selling at this time, but I plan to in the future! I will post announcements and shop links before any openings or shop drops. I'm looking optimistically at later in 2023.

Commissions: Currently closed. Please check out my Future Commissions post for what to expect when I open.

Prices: I don't have prices available at this time, but this post may give you a general idea.

Shipping: It kills me, but I can only ship within the US currently. I'm not set up for international sales and don't sell often enough to register with foreign countries. There may be some countries I can ship to, but no promises. (UK and EU generally off the table due to their VAT laws.)

Patterns: I do not sell my patterns.

I do not use real fur.

My pieces are not toys. They are art pieces and are not for children. While I use durable thread and attach all parts as securely as I can, in the end they are still handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces that have not received safety testing since they are intended for display or gentle handling. I'm always improving my methods, but I recommend care for longest lasting enjoyment.

Surface wash only. Some parts are densely stuffed and may not dry quickly if waterlogged. Painted details are permanent but may fade with rough washing.

Allergy Warning: I have 3 cats. Due to the setup of my home, I cannot prevent allergens from entering the studio.

Bicoloured Thylacine!

This was inspired by naturally occurring piebald quolls and Tasmanian devils as well as domesticated sugar gliders showing bicolour/piebald patterning.

Maybe in an alternative universe, thylacines were domesticated rather than driven to extinction?

I've made a 1/2 size thylacine plushie- this one is all printed/sublimated "at home".

They're made with short pile minky fabric which is very soft and floppy, with plastic pellets for beanie weight in their belly.

Been working very slowly on a red fox plush. Picked out some toasty colors last fall.

I swapped out several of the fabrics once I got to the pattern cut out and saw how they'd interact together. Sometimes two fabrics just don't want to be friends.

I'm trying a few pattern edits on this one, mostly in the ears and feet. I love the little toe highlights they have so I had to give it a try, even if it had to be sewn entirely by hand.

The individual pieces like body, legs, tail, face, are mostly sewn but not assembled, so there are a lot of clippies holding her together but she's staring to take shape!

It's exciting to finally have some good realistic red fox fabrics to work with. My previous reds are still realistic colors, but missing that classic orange pop.

Hoping to have time to work on her more soon!

On April 16th 2025 the US federal government has proposed to change the interpretation of the endangered species act so that it no longer protects habitat.

This is open for public comment until the end of May 19th. Please comment and make your voice heard.

Wildlife need their habitat. If the ESA redefines harm so that habitat is no longer protected, the implications for wildlife would be catastrophic.

Just saw Hazel in daylight for the first time!!!

She is one of the most beautiful beautiful foxes I think I've ever seen. Deep, chestnut red fur with a jet black throat patch and black tail. She's going to have some really pretty cubs! I tried to get a photo but she spotted me at the window and ran off (which is good as it means she has a healthy fear of people).

Finally she briefly popped up on the trail cam in daylight this morning!

Male vs female red fox head shape.

Males typically have bigger, more domed heads. Their heads are also wider, with the ears set a little further apart and more towards the side of the head than on top of it like the females. Males also typically have wider, blockier muzzles compared to the more slender muzzles of the females.

Red foxes can vary hugely, so these differences aren't always obvious. Some males can have slimmer heads while some females can have big, blocky heads like the males. As a general rule though, these differences tend to be pretty standard.

Oh yeah Euro red foxes are very different anatomically from NA red foxes (NARFs).

I think it's probably cause Euro reds evolved to fill a similar niche to that of coyotes in North America. Aside from jackals, which historically were only found in eastern parts of Europe, there's not any other mid-sized canid predators in most of Europe, so red foxes filled that niche. They're generally bigger and bulkier than NARFs and take larger prey more often. As well as the usual rodents and rabbits, it's common for European red foxes to take deer fawns, wild boar piglets, lambs and brown hares. In Australia they commonly kill wallabies. They'll even try to take injured or sick adult roe deer.

On average a male NA red fox weighs about 10lbs compared to 14lb average for a male Euro red fox. However, it's not uncommon for Euro reds to be over 20lbs and the heaviest ever recorded was a 35lb male fox from southern England. That's about the same as one of the smaller coyote subspecies. Here's some photos of the 35lb fox (WARNING: dead animal photos). It doesn't appear overweight, just naturally massive! EDIT: apparently there was an even heavier 38lb fox killed in Scotland!

Also here's my NA red fox and Euro red fox skulls (both female). The NA fox is a sub-adult so not quite fully grown, but even then they look SO different. The Euro foxes are a lot bigger and bulkier!

Examples of dwarfism in European red foxes in the UK. Reports of foxes exhibiting dwarfism seem to be on the increase in areas of the UK but the reason for it is unknown. It could possibly be linked to higher levels of inbreeding in urban fox populations.

Oh man, that's hard! If we go purely aesthetics, it would be either a Siberian weasel

or a yellow-throated marten!

I love their colours so much. But I also really love pine martens because they're adorable and I have actually seen one in the wild, which makes them special to me ^^ I really like all mustelids though, such an amazing group of animals <3
