Hi! This might be a stupid question but I thought you might be able to help me: Is there a genre name for a book that has a modern setting in which magic exists but is hidden (think Harry Potter)? I thought maybe something like urban fantasy but I looked into it and it doesn't seem to be that kind of setting. Basically I have an idea for a story and I'd like to read books with this kind of setting to maybe help me get familiar with the type of worldbuilding. Thank you!! :)
there’s not a genre for a specific kind of plot, per se: it’s more the genres have specific plots that tend to exist, and it sounds like you might be looking for contemporary fantasy. it might not fit perfectly, but it sounds like the closest to your query! i admittedly don’t read a lot of books with hidden magic, but here’s some recs that might fit:
The Regrets
Magic for Liars
The Starless Sea
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
Daughter of Smoke and Bone
The Bone Season
Good Omens
The Rook
The Summoning
there’s absolutely more, but again i don’t read many books with that kind of plot, since i prefer stories where magic is commonplace. i can’t stand the moment when the narrator finds out magic is real and flips out like she’s never touched a fantasy book with a barge pole, y’know? but that’s just me! if anyone has any recs, please do add on!
There’s actually a split in urban fantasy between worlds where everyone knows about magic and worlds where magic is kind of hidden, and since urban/contemporary fantasy is my jam and I would love for you to write your book, OP, I’m weighing in.
