MARKET MONDAY!
Our summer job at the PACT garden ended on Friday, August 12. Today I came to market to volunteer. I worked with Clara (Thistle Town garden manager) and Aga. Olinda and Sojung volunteered to harvest in the garden.
We’re selling three different flavours of the sauerkraut we made and a lot of purple beans- which sold out really fast. Marie and I competed on who can harvest most beans on Friday :p Loser has to buy the winner a cup of coffee! Of course I won! I went crazy! We ended up with 23 lbs of beans!!!
There was a tomato-tasting contest that happened in the farmer’s market. Our tomato was famouz! I hope we win!

MARKET MONDAY!! with Marie and Laura (Elmbank Junior Middle School’s garden manager).
It was nice working with them. Marie is not in any of the pictures, but I swear she was there. Laura was so kind, she also bought us popsicles!
Look at those carrots and beets, aren’t they wonderful?
Marie said she enjoyed the market very much. See? Who wouldn’t love market days? They’re fun and relaxing.

1-2: We made a shelf beside the oven using cob/clay. It was a really horrible experience, especially at the beginning, when I learned from Olinda the unique ingredient in the cob: cow poop. We did a great job tho despite the smell and weird texture of the clay. Maybe I can put this on my resume with flying colours,
*can handle shit professionally*
Me: Friends that deal with crap together...
Olinda: Smell together
3: Sadly, the injured chicken is still in quarantine. According to Beth, she seems to be getting better, but Ovira seemed to be really worried. They’d been keeping an eye on her, making sure she’s eating and drinking. Everyone loves her, pats her every now and then. I hope I see her feeling better on Tuesday.
4-5: Sayara, Sojung and Anna worked on Adam’s wedding props. It’s such a cute idea, so imaginative! Hope everything goes well on his party!!
6: Trying to be cute after a crappy job (Mads’ pun), carrying a subtle scent of shit under my fingernails.
PS. AFTER THIS PHOTO, I GOT STUNG BY A BEE FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER!!!!! EVEN THOUGH I SCREAMED FOR MY LIFE, I ACTUALLY THOUGHT IT WAS SO FREAKIN WONDERFUL- LIKE THE FIRST TIME I SAW A DIAGRAM OF THE HUMAN HEART IN GRADE 5 SCIENCE- TO KNOW, FINALLY, WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE STUNG BY A BEE
AHHHHH I FELT SO OLD AS I WATCHED ONE OF MY CHILDHOOD FANTASIES (originated from the movie My Girl) COME TO LIFE
WORKED MY ASS OFF UNDER THE SCORCHING SUN, UNKNOWINGLY BROUGHT HOME ALL KINDS OF BUGS, FELT THE WARMTH OF COW SHIT ON MY BURNT SKIN, AND GOT STUNG BY A BEE--- I’M OFFICIALLY A GARDENER!!! YAHOO!!

JPI COMMUNITY FARMER’S MARKET TUESDAY!!
1-3: One of the chickens is in a terrible condition. She got her right foot wounded so they took her out of the chicken coop. Ovira has been taking care of her; she’s washing the chicken’s foot in the 2nd picture. 4-5: Olinda and I had to run the market ourselves today because Sayara hasn’t come back from her trip, Aga is away for vacation, and Adam is experiencing grave back-pain and needs to take a rest. Fortunately, we had some good neighbours who came to help us. Ovira helped us make the soup while Beth provided us with loonies & toonies. Also, they both stayed during the market hours which lessened our stress. We had a great market: a lot of costumers came, people loved the soup, many brought their frozen composts and used their Market Dollars to buy vegetables. It was quite difficult managing with just the two of us. We did our very best, interchanging between tasks: serving soup, attending to costumers buying vegetables and costumers with composts, washing the dishes, answering questions about the garden, giving a quick tour to some interested costumers, explaining what the market/ garden/ summer job/ volunteering is about, keeping track of the money and the vegetables, all the while, dealing with a persistent costumer who wanted us to purchase a flower pot she brought. We sold off most of our produce by 6pm, but there were still some costumers who came so we had to harvest vegetables for them. We started closing and cleaning up half an hour early hoping to leave at 6:30 but we ended up leaving at 7:30pm, which means we got home at 8:30pm. Nightmare, I’m telling you. I developed a new sense of respect for Olinda, my Garden Bae, as we worked side by side. She’s meticulous and conscientious even when no one’s around. She makes sure everything is done properly. I’m also diligent with my work, but today I knew that we’re understaffed, which means it would take us longer to do the same amount of work compared to if Sayara was there. So I kept telling her we don’t have to do everything so perfectly; I was so eager to get home too, feeling more restless every minute we worked past our schedule. She calmly (and with a hint of displeasure) told me we’re in charge and are responsible for the garden for that day, so we need to finish everything before we leave. I was tired, not stubborn, so it didn’t take long before I gave in and worked with her, trying to keep up with her pace even when I felt exasperated. Many times she asked me if I was still okay, and I’d answered yes. I did my best to hide my fatigue, but she worries about me even when I’m just quietly doing my work. Actually, she worries most when I’m silent (she’s gotten so used to me being noisy). She’s like a big sister, really. But that day, she was D’BOSS. Her work ethic is inspirational, it was an honour to be her side-kick.

What does Linda Goodman has to say about your personality, relationships, and strengths and weaknesses? Tell me your birth date, and we’ll find out in a few flip of pages.
Our horoscopes has been the talk of the day. Madeline kindly shared with us three of her Linda Goodman astrology books. We read my horoscope together, and it was interesting that a lot of what she said about an August 22 person matched who I am today. Even more interesting when I found my favourite quote “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration” by Thomas Edison. I felt a chill run down my spine, so creepy! But then again, I’ve read my horoscope many times before. And I wasn’t who she described me to be 6 years ago, not even close. You see, I spent the last three years shaping myself into the kind of woman I want to be. I made a list of qualities I didn’t have but wanted to have in the future, of skills I thought I needed to learn, and of people I wanted to follow; I have a diary that kept track of my improvements; I watched myself grow into coincidently, a LEO KIND OF WOMAN: powerful, independent and confident. Goodman’s description of an August 22 person is interesting, but I did not, even the slightest- even with the similar quotations- believed that she predicted my woman-ness. I’m more complicated than my birthdate. My strengths and weaknesses, fears, accomplishments, desires and core values are tied with different memories and experiences from my 19 years on earth. I have changed too many times, and will continue to change, to accept that my self is as simple as a couple pages and ink.
*Found another “wish,” you can have it. :)

1. The sunflowers avoiding my ugly face.
2 & 3. Mulching the path between tomatoes and peppers. Look just how much Anna the Shovel Person enjoys mulching <3 and how much swag Madeline the Rake Person has. Btw, I’m usually a Wheelbarrow Person but today I weeded the carrot beds to escape the unpleasant environment.
5. Can you see the dandelion seed? In the Philippines it’s called a “wish.” We would catch it when we see one. We’d hold it gently on our palm, careful not to crush it. We’d whisper a wish and then blow it away. Here we can see the decaying flower holding onto a “wish.” What could it possible want?
We’re mostly dazed by living flowers- especially when they’re colourful, oddly shaped, cute, vibrant - but today I want to bring your attention to the beauty of this withered flower. How fascinating it is to catch it on it’s way back to earth. It curls to hug itself and cling on to the plant for as long as it could, hoping to be adored by anyone, by anything one last time -almost like a dying wish. So I brought out my camera and took a shot.

At Elmbank Garden
When we were looking for the entrance to the garden, something embarrassing happened. I thought I’d scare Anna, Sojung and Marie by bringing up the scary parts in the movie Lights Out as we enter the empty school. However, this plan backfired. I was leading the group to the second entrance door when I sensed a presence on my right but I thought there can’t be anyone in there because the school is closed. I looked to my right anyway and screamed so loud when I saw a being sitting on a chair. When I calmed down, I realized it was an actual person. I apologized for screaming while holding back my laughter. This old woman said it was okay and introduced herself as an international linguist. I walked the empty hallway with shame written all over my face while my friends laughed at my spectacularly embarrassing mistake. #EPICFAIL
Our work today ended early because it was too hot outside and they didn’t have any shade. You can see Olinda in the 2nd picture suffering, as she eats her lunch under the scorching sun. #TheStruggleIsReal. I won’t even mention how the managers had their lunch under a tent... oops.
Tuesday. July 26, 2016
1 & 2: Teamed up with Anna in detaining the wild yellow flowers that were blocking the path, and set up the soaker hoses for the newly-turned bed prepared for lettuce seeds. SOMEONE had too much fun stabbing, cutting and hammering.
3. The “Shrek Fingers,” a term coined by Ms. Olinda Tavares, referring to the green-ish fingers we get from pruning tomato plants.
4. TOMATO DREAM TEAM!! HUHA!
Coach Adam and Coach Aga went to us today to emphasize the importance of precision in pruning the sensitive, vulnerable tomato plants. It turns out some tomato plants got their growing tips pinched off, hindering their growth. Shorter tomato plants means less tomatoes. "A lack of precision is dangerous when the margin of error is small." (D. Rumsfeld)
5. Indulge in this tomato’s unique beauty

We sold more flower bunches today than ever. They really loved the flowers. Credits to garden fam who arranged them. 💐

Monday. July 18, 2016 A really windy Monday at Sorauren Farmer's Market! Shoutout to my garden bae O.D. (OlinDa's salon name) 💚 for putting up with my sillyness 35 hours a week 😁✨

We harvested kale, collards, beets, parsley, beans, swiss chard and carrots for the food bank and the market on Monday. After bunching and cleaning them, we put the bins of harvests in the walk-in fridge.
We spent the afternoon painting the signs.

We had a grade 7 volunteer, Andrea, help us make a new log-bed.
2nd: Sunflowers. Wait until they bloom!

First thing we did was tie the braided garlics on the ceiling of the ‘head quarters’. As you can see, I am pretend-tying the garlics for the picture. We are drying them for 2-3 weeks because they store better when dried.
We planted beans in one of the former garlics beds. Then, we harvested cabbages and prepared that former garlic/ cabbage bed for bokchoy.
Tuesday. July 12, 2016
We harvested three long garlic beds and braided them. There is a technique in braiding 10 garlics together. I tried it but I couldn’t do it properly so I resolved in simply cutting out their roots (to make myself useful)... but I couldn’t do that properly either and ended up cutting my finger with a newly sharpened knife.
It hurt a lot considering only a tiny part of me was damaged (to say it was damaged is an overstatement but it sounds poetic so excuse me). I guess I haven’t felt physical pain in long time that I have forgotten how much it hurts to bleed literally. I marvelled at my brain’s ability to recognize the pain coming from my forefinger, and more so to the fact that my initial reaction to the cut was to see how much blood I could lose. Don’t misunderstand, I am against self-inflicted cuts. I just find something beautiful in bleeding. It’s not everyday that I see what’s inside of me, what I am made of. Also, it’s the least demanding and most effortless way to fight the growing feeling of alienation, to pause the never-ending existential crisis, and disregard (for awhile) the uncertainties of the future; and to focus instead in the fact that I am LIVING IN THE PRESENT-- bleeding at the moment.
