About two weeks into may, we all decided to get together and have a picnic!
We walked out to this undeveloped strech of land/park by the river, and ate, and played frisbee and soccer. Ari and Chris made shashlik, which was very tasty, and Hannah and I climbed a tree, much to Lena's dismay.
We got get to climb it eventually. Fun was had.
This was the girl from Georgia's performance in the talent competition. She was teh favorite to win before the competition even started (something involving bribery, I believe) and was able to get away with all sorts of things, such as having a thirty-person dance number for her segment in the talent competition.

How do you all like belated updates?
Here are some pictures from Zhemchuzhina Mira aka "pearls of the world."
Back in September, the woman who organizes this walked up to Skyler, one of the girls in my group, and basically said, "You're cute. You should be in my beauty pageant." And Skyler, being the wonderful adventurous soul she is, said yes.
Fast forward to April, where Skyler is in a pageant comprised of foreign exchange students from all over the world! There were girls from Georgia, Mozambique, Angola, Vietnam, Mexico, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Russia, Malaysia, Kyrgyztan, China, Bangladesh Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and the US (Skyler). They each dressed up in their National costume and introduced themselves while a video of their home country played. Then there was a question and answer session. The host spoke too fast, and the board was hard for the contestants to see, plus all of them were learning Russia as a second language, meaning that the question and answer portion was a little awkward to watch in places. Like when one girl said that Russia imports Cactus from the Netherlands. The talent competition was fantastic. Most girls performed national folk dances, but some sang. Skyler sang "Sittin' at the dock of the bay" really well, except for when the emcee tried to cut her off early. Then they all paraded out in borrowed wedding dresses and won fun gift bags. The girls from Georgia and Angola also won modeling contracts. It was cool too watch!
Some Updates
So I'm back in America! Despite some headaches with airlines, I made it back in one piece, as did my bags (these two things did not happen at the same time). I have a huge backlog of stuff I haven't been able to post because my computer was being hateful, so for the next few weeks, really old stuff is going to get posted.
Once all my NSLI-Y stuff is up, this blog is probably going to get an overhaul. It's still a travel blog; I do not intend to stop having adventures, but the adventures I have are probably going to be very different and I want to reflect that. Also, posting frequency is going to go down (not that it was frequent or regular to begin with), because I need to get a job and work this summer and then I'm going to college and a lot of things are changing very very quickly and so on.
That's about it.

A few months ago, we all entered an essay contest. My essay waqs on the topic "Language is a bridge between peoples." I chose this topic because it rang true. I study languages because I want to travel the world and experience different cultures as more than just a tourist. While tourism is a great way to see beautiful things, without the language, it's very hard to understand them. Besides, if you know a foreign language, you can meet all sorts of interesting people and experience things that you wouldn't have been able to do without the language.
After I was told I had passed the first round, I had to participate in an oral competition. I was asked to pick a topic, and then given five minutes to prepare. My topic was "Love is like a tree, it grows by itself, let the deep roots of our whole being, and often continues to turn green and even flourish in the ruins of our hearts." I missed one of the words, and didn't quite understand it, but I elaborated on it as best I could, saying that I agree, but not entirely, because in order for a tree to grow, it needs sunlight, water, and good soil, and one person cannot be all of that at once. I thought I did really well until it became apparent that no one understood what I was talking about except for the judges. Given that we were being evaluated on our ability to respond to questions other students asked, I was a bit disappointed to find that the only questions I got were people asking for clarification. Afterwords, Tatyanna Gennadevna told me I did a very good job, however.
Just recently, we got the results! I didn't win (there was a citywide competition that I did not get invited to, so that's that), but I did get invited to an interesting ceremony where they gave us all certificates! Here's a link to the article, and really cool photo gallery of the event!
