Pg 1 Spoilers/Theories/Rambles
Had to search up quite a few words on this pg ;-;
Setting appears to be on a boat:
Aquarius pen (Possibly fountain pen?) - Zodiac related
I watch the sea
Valetudinarian Walrus - Valetudinarian as an adj means 'showing undue concern about one's health'
In the chine - Chine means 'a steep-sided coastal ravine in Southern England (like Shanklin Chine) OR the sharp angle where a boat's bottom meets its sides'. Southern England mentioned as the author is from South England.
whaups are crying - Whaups are curlews, 'a large wading bird of the sandpiper family, with a long downcurved bill, brown streaked plumage, and frequently a distinctive ascending two-note call.'
flotsam fish - Flotsam refers to 'wreckage, cargo, or debris from a shipwreck or accident that floats on the surface of the water'.
nice gulls love a sailor
Names:
Casy Ferris - Apparent bride to be?
St Lazarus (in the chine)? Using Google, 'The disciple and friend of Jesus raised from the dead by Jesus. He was the brother of Martha and Mary, and resided in Bethany, a suburb of Jerusalem'.
'To-day' is used in the narrative, using google I found out that today stopped being hyphenated around the 1910s. As this was published around 1934, this could be an intentional choice by the author to indicate what time period this specific narrative is set in OR it could be his writing style. Shall update after I've read through more pages.
The speaker seems to think Casy's soon to be husband is being a martyr for marrying Casy and seems really eager to record down any gossip.
