FINAL FANTASY XIV.

imagine peaking in life before the age of 15 and now everything is boring af

imagine living the next 10 years searching for that same transcendent moment in hopes of something different

you go traveling, meet new people, start a hobby

your sword collection is growing nicely (at least)

somewhere in the middle of daddy's conquer-the-world quest you run into a stray cat who hisses and spits at you

you let it live the first time because the mewling adds variety

but then it lives the second time, the third: you remember wishing and praying of something like this, when you were a child

a fated rival, an opponent that wouldn't die

a friend (!)

you have the most epic showdown of your life and that's where the story should've ended, with you leaving on the happiest of highs

except the curtains rise again and you're forced to watch someone steal your spot and sabotage your sport.

no. no, that won't do.

you're good at hunting, even with yourself as the prey

you win everything back (too easy) except your friend, who keeps leaving you on read instead of starting epic showdown (pt. 2)

As it can NOT keep up with Zenos movements.....it's form began to melt. It try one last FUTILE time to reform itself into another shape......but it his it's limits. It's attempt to think of another form have it's fleshy bits explode splatter over the floor.

THREE transformation in rapid sucession with powers. His body can not keep changing up without repruccusion. Plus the damage and the constant healing have cause...moleculear break down.

IF Subterfuge Huey could have maintain that unshakable ego then maybe this fight would have last longer....but how can he in front of this beast?

"That why i always just change a limb or do it for a short time. To fight a enemy of that calibur with three rapid transformaiton is a waste of energy. Adios me."

Still a learning experience. Huey felt nothing as he watch himself melt into meat goo from a distance.....a conman never gonna have a good death.

But at least try to die on a job with a smile in your face.

As the meat lump try forming feeble arm to strangle Zenos....thin....weak little feeble arms....only for the entire body the gitch out and boom.......as if he never exsisted.

zenos' shield flickers into form as the viscera from the chimera-like clone explodes all over. he stares at the pathetic, dying mass before swiveling back in the direction of the buildings.

although it's too far to see clearly, he's fairly certain that the man who introduced him to this fight is somewhere on top of them.

"It is done," zenos speaks to the air. "I suppose more game awaits elsewhere."

it is more than he needs to say, but he gives his temporary ally the benefit of an explanation in exchange for the fight. then the blond re-sheathes his weapon, turns away, and starts walking off in search of more...prey.

he's unsure how he got here, but in retrospect, he's just as uncertain it matters. how could his focus lay on anything before now when, in the present, lies the thrill of quickened blood through his veins? will grins sheepishly, looks the man from his toes to the top of his head. this is the scene unfolding before him:

there's a figure - one zenos something, whose presence is as intoxicating as the intense look he's shooting at will. there's a weapon pressed to his neck, digging into the side of his throat ready to collect it as a scythe does to wheat. then, there's a writer, whose amusement is too odd-fitting for the underlying threat of the situation.

he speaks, lightly, as if unaware of the danger of doing so. " what was that you said about the whole ' being bored ' thing? "

head tilting into the blade, he looks ready to lean forward, press together lips now limited simply to ghosting above one another. " does this get your blood pumpin', angel? "

A PROPOSITION IS offered him in a corner beset by shadows. the magitek scythe rests against the pulse of life, inert until its owner calls upon it to kill; zenos himself stands as still as a stone, his shadow draped over the smaller man in his grasp.

a simple exchange of words had ended in a showdown such as this. and yet he would get nothing out of this besides a need to clean his blade, once again—another babbling fool left to bleed out beneath his touch.

but the man's words seem to laugh at him, while he cannot discern the source of amusement.

"Your heart beats faster than mine," zenos observes, heightened garlean senses giving him more insight into the man's reactions. "I would say it holds more blood in this moment—shall we see?"

the edge of the scythe shifts, pressing against skin. it threatens to draw out a fresh line of scarlet.

Whatever's going on here, he doesn't know if it's worth all the posturing. Wolfwood inhales through his nose, then steps around the young man to create a barrier between him and this massive stranger with is own body. He doesn't know who this guy is, he doesn't know how strong he might be, but that doesn't really matter right now.

...But something about him, the way he carries himself, the cold and unwavering way he speaks brings back unpleasant memories. It's all-too familiar.

"You oughta turn around," he replies, voice level. "He's just a dumb kid."

Wolfwood's keenly aware of the boy still trembling behind his legs. He thinks he should shift gears, speak hunter-to-hunter.

"Not worth the blood," Wolfwood states. Talking like this makes his skin crawl, but it's practiced. He's had to do it plenty of times. "You can find somethin' more excitin' somewhere else. A real challenge, not some small fry. Hey, kid—"

The boy stiffens up behind him.

"Whatever ya did, or whatever ya took, I don't care—give that shit back."

"I, I—" the kid shifts on his feet again, before stuffing something in wolfwood's palms. "I didn't mean ta' take it, honest! It was just a dare...sniff, a stupid dare!"

after that outburst, all of his energy seems to drain away. he slumps on the ground behind wolfwood and huddles into a heap, sniffling noisily through his nose.

zenos stops staring at him. nor does he look wolfwood's hands, but lifts his eyes higher to meet the proprietor in shades who thinks to block him, and challenges him to find equal prey.

"The issue of pursuit," the prince begins, words monotone enough to sound as if he recites from a textbook, "was simple matter of cause and effect. If any blood was to be spilled, it would have been from resistance in the struggle to avoid getting caught."

cold as he is, and brutal as he acted, his opinions on dull prey were similar: hardly worth the effort of execution, though driving them to a corner sometimes offered mild surprise.

"Will you give me that, then?" he's not asking about the necklace.

"The challenge that I seek."

Whoa...half of the people in this crazy city looked like they'd walked right out of a video game! Like a fighting game or maybe even a critically acclaimed MMORPG...with an expanded free trial which you can play through the entirety of its expansions up to level 70 for free with no restrictions on play time?

Imagine that.

Evil Jax couldn't help but follow this guy as he made his ascent to the top of this building, admiring every point of his armor, his long blond hair, the imposing aura of him. It should've been enough to scare him, but in reality, he was just entranced by how cool he was.

Unfortunately, he wasn't sneaky enough.

He lets out a yelp as the point of the scythe meets his chest, his hands raising above his head as though he was guilty of something.

"I-I-I'm sorry! I couldn't help but follow, y-you're just so...so cool!"

the jarring yelp does induce zenos to action at last: he half turns his head, taking in the...absurd sight of a creature in overalls attempting to fawn on him. zenos is no stranger to admiration—he faintly recalled the last ascian he worked with speaking of that in detail—but he simply does not acknowledge it.

just as he ignores the compliment now, instead raising his weapon to lift one of the creature's odd ears. they were long and slender—reminiscent of viera, but lacking the fur that race possessed on the same appendages.

"I care not for pets," he continues a second later, "Nor does this world cater to strays. You would do well to find your way back into your cage, little Rabbit."

"That is the worst way I've ever be threatened in my entire li-." Unfortunately he seemed more then 500% serious about actually hunting her down. Beyond all the poetic nonsense the individual managed to produce a scythe from what seemed like thin air. And dying or getting extremely injured was not on her itinerary for the day at all, causing Architect to throw herself out of the way.

"You really are a freak! Why the hell does "Decapitated Architect" sound like a fun time to you? There's like a billion other people in this city that deserve it more then me and are far more annoying!"

So much to their dismay and without anywhere really to go considering the building that was destroyed might've been the best place to hide the doll decided to back up in the opposite direction, beginning the world's worst and probably most deadly game of hide-and-seek she ever played.

"Fine you wanna play we'll play! Try and catch me fella!"

she speaks her name, and he commits it to memory—for the moment. if this quarry proved more sport than spoils, it would be saved for another hunt, another day.

certainly she was bold enough to keep talking while he threatened her life.

zenos laughs as the girl retreats, hearing the sounds of her escape through towards the rest of the ruins—buildings with enough bits and pieces scattered around to obfuscate her tracks and hide her forms.

yes, to find her would be satisfying enough, but he would have to take it slow to draw out the match.

"You are a fleet-footed girl," he remarks, "but I have all the time in the world."

for now, zenos bends down and has a rare moment of impulse: he runs.

The double moves slack and relaxed, but expressionless and slightly jerky and twitchy. Little more than a doll or a puppet with its strings still firmly attached, they meander aimlessly, stopping and interacting with the world around them like they were a character in a video game.

Stop, look at an object, walk on to the next.

The puppet's Soul is a jagged, crooked looking thing, attached to their chest like a glowing pin, vaguely translucent. Now that Kris is close enough to see it properly, they realize that, just like they had been ripped from their body, the Soul must have fractured as well. No wonder it was so quiet and passive at the moment.

Kris's mirror stops and turns to Zenos before his footsteps can even be heard. They look past him, to Kris, who stands stiff and uncomfortable, then back to Zenos.

"... You're not one for mercy, I guess." The voice that comes from the puppet is a bit flat and echoed dully. They shift a foot back, and in an instant, their appearance changes to match their Dark World form.

A sword is gripped in a hand, and the Soul flashes bright. They hold the sword confidently - or in the mockery of confidence. Thin crimson strings are attached to their limbs, all connected to the Soul that's beating on their chest.

a paltry showing for a half-dead foe, but the sight of the Soul still gives zenos pause. he halts his advance to study the puppet before him closer, scythe coming to rest blade down towards the floor.

"An artificial heart?" zenos wonders out loud. "I have seen struggles against Man, Magic, and Fate. From whence do you draw your power?"

he does not know concept of the Soul as it works in their world, but he is interested in different sources of power nonethless. had he not tried to implant a crystal of his own to draw forth its strength? siphoned the Echo of another to project its effects upon his own sense? seized control of a very eikon, to better channel the monster's strengths to his own will?

"Or is it the power that draws on you?"

observations were only the start. the next time he moves, zenos aims his blade at one of the strings—an experimental cut.

The whirl of flesh around the mattress begins to rise, and claws dig through the foam pillow, sending yellowed old padding spewing out of the casing. Sharp toothed maws erupted from human looking faces rising to the surface of the ooze and extending. The shrunken deformed faces split at the middle to reveal red esophageal tracts lined with rows upon rows of teeth.

Each one of the horrific mouths curved around the attempts to fight back, and chewed on anything they could grab onto. Parts of the bed, the frame, and the man were latched onto. Ooze hands spilled forth from her core and each boiling, slimy hand tried to snare something in its grasp.

It was clear: eliminate all of these copies, and clean the slate. Destroy everything else and she'd get her body back.

With no remorse, no empathy at all, the feminine portion of the monster steps atop the rest of the sludge, its featureless face turned in the direction of the sudden attack. Ooze closed in on the man, grabbing onto his skin and burning and pulling him towards her.

A mouth opened from her "chin" to her waist, vertical and filled with eyes and teeth, and it stretched wider and wider in anticipation.

"Goodbye."

"No, wait—stop—hhggnrk!"

the cries of the zenos who was a scholar, a studious recluse—die as quickly as they begin, his body melting in pieces from the contact before his consciousness fades in the murk.

the gooey, thick viscosity flooding the bedroom floor and furniture is now alone in the room.

until something cracks.

it's a half-filled glass of water on the table, the cup suddenly opaque from mist. the liquid inside seems to solidify as well before changing to its new form—ice.

the cold air that caused the transformation seeps in from beneath the door, a creeping breath of frigid death that skirts above the surface of the ooze in an effort to quell the steaming mass. even so, the cause of such magic doesn't have enough patience to wait for the entire room to freeze—if it even could.

the next second the bedroom door splinters into pieces as a magitek scythe comes flying in through the entrance—towards her.

This is just SAD.

Huey sigh sitting down watching his Subterfuge self struggle. One of the Subterfuge arm flying off. The beam cause him to have to jump to another roof top and BARELY made it as this version of himself while master the ability to lie to one self do not posses the dice he gotten from winning that game with the devil. Nor is he using Pretender thearter......which Huey only had after getting his ass whupped,

He lack that primal fear that allow Huey to be cautious. To keep trying till the bitter end. A reminder even if he have the best powers and gears he not the strongest. The people who can overwhelm him are numerous.

"Honestly should have just went for chainsaw or posinous gas. Then again. I suppose the method to UNREFINE for this version. At this point it really is just a matter of time before big dude get bored and end this in one blow. If it was me...hmmm my next step probably mimickery."

Subterfuge Huey SNARL. Losing a arm and it's beam being blocked still haven't killed it's violent fever......no it finally have it's FIRST smartest idea this whole sad excuse for a fight.

It TURN himself into Zenos. Look for look. Armor detail as close as it get.

The FLESH SLOWLY began to reform as the Subterfuge Huey began to make movement akin to Zenos from what he observe.....from the knight, the monster to now Zenos. Subterfuge Huey seem to take on EVERY other form in combat EXCEPT himself......but there a fundamental difference....it lack.....THAT same animal like ferocity. It lack that savageness of the wild animal. It can mimick the movement but it don't have the same mentality of the person who swung it.

For the FIRST TIME.....subtertuge Huey having fundmental lack of faith in himself.....the fear that if he to fight in his true look and lose.....it be true ego death. It's body also can not keep up with the movement as his stamina falling.......only kept up with the little lies he still the best.

"Hah...hahaha!"

for the first time, zenos laughs. he had anticipated fighting himself in the past—in part no thanks to the ridiculous stunt pulled by that ascian—but had lost his chance. now it comes to him again as a caricature, from an opponent who hardly knew how to imitate anything beyond what he discerned from the surface.

"Come then, is this all you have?"

he whips his scythe in his hand before stopping to stare at a fixed point behind his opponent. a second later, another form emerges: his reaper avatar from the void, who wields its own blade to slash at the fake zenos' shoulder.

"If you are to wear my face, I expect a better showing than this!"

he raises his scythe to the air and attacks again—not with his weapon, but with magic. akh morn's powerful strikes fall down on the clone in succession.

" WAIT--- HOLD ON!! "

Eiden kicks the air with his feet, panicked as the threat strikes so directly. He starts to seriously doubt that although the man uses title of a friend, he might be way far from it --

What is it with this meathead?! Have you never heard of things like hobbies?

Evidently not. Eiden knew his share of fight enthusiast but this guy didn't seemed to have much else going through that head. Either way he's got to get his eyes off of himself so he can shoot write that text message... He can't let him see the message itself.

" Ah, just for the time being! He might pass by-- there's bunch of stuff he likes here! Fishing is one, street performance-- " he starts, vaguely waving to the direction of the acrobat in the short distance, turning with a slight kick in the air..

" And there's also bubbletea!!! -- oh whoa!!! Look at that-- " he exclaims moving a little to the side to show off the stall behind him, where an passive looking old man stands, wiping down counter, "over here, behind me actually-- "

if it is just a moment of inattention eiden wants, he gets it easily enough. the prince turns to study the vendor in question, dutifully cleaning his stall as if unbothered by the noise. a colorful sign besides him advertises a variety of flavors and add-ons for the tea, along with a few accompanying photos.

"You are saying that the Warrior of Light indulges in such colorful concoctions out of choice?" his tone sounds unimpressed, but his eyes are studying in the options with serious intent.

star-shaped jelly, cheese foam, fruit pearls, popping boba...

"A drink of inane proportions—tea interspersed with superfluous sediment spheres at its base. Does it thrill him to chase each singular pearl through a straw hardly wide enough to accommodate their forms? You there."

he gives eiden a shake, before depositing him in front of the bubble tea stall.

"Which one is his usual order?"

A Blasphemy in all but name, the creature that had split from Helena Harper was every ounce of her hatred made manifest. It attacked all who stood in its way with ruthless efficiency and full intent to slay whatever walked into its web.

Cold, calculated, and while it acted on instinct, there was an intensely human intelligence behind those slit, golden yellow eyes.

A flanging hiss follows her most recent kill, and the ominous presence of someone- Or someTHING- alerted her to flee back into where she was comfortable, but not before leaving her kill to chrysalid where it sat.

That would hatch into a perfect drone later.

But her attention is suddenly ripped from that perfect kill by an absolute giant of a man crashing down from above, and she suddenly stands to her full height. Spider-like tendrils flared out in a threat display, and his taunts are met with the disturbing sound of the vertebrae in her neck cracking as she rolled it to the side, a wicked smirk crawling across her features.

And she does speak, but not in any way that made sense to normal humans. Bioluminescent lights flashed across her body, but somehow manifested into words in his mind- a form of telepathy. "Why? Are you OFFERING?"

She wastes no time, an alien-like shriek- almost keening- emanating off the walls, those spider like tendrils flaring out and pointing directly at him as shards of bone shot forth, aiming for vital organs and exposed skin, using the newly formed Chrysalid between them as cover.

"Throw yourself upon the pyre, then!!"

intriguing.

he will allow her her tantrum, albeit with precaution: a magical barrier forms before him as her projectiles fly forth, absorbing the impact of the flying spurs while he catches one stray with his gloved hand. opening his palm, zenos stares at the piece of bone with interest before dropping it to try and crush beneath his heel.

"An effective use of resources," he acknowledges. "Though of crude and limited construction. I wonder—"

he vanishes from sight, only to teleport in front of the strange cocoon-like structure conceived by the monster a second later. distance closed, but not quite eliminated: zenos accepts her cover to claim it as his own.

"—do you kill to feed? Or is the slaughter itself what fills your hunger? I think it better that our feast continues undisturbed."

the scythe is raised before it comes slashing down in the direction of the Chrysalid.

Oh the hit connects. The armor shatter as Subterfuge Huey get send flying back.....that dealt MAJOR damage. Any normal person would be dead.

To bad Huey a roach. Regardless of Subterfuge Huey or regular Huey. Huey only truly at his strongest when he force into a corner and have to think for himself.

And if Huey knows himself. This version gonna lose himself in a few minutes and go full nut job.

"Mental break down in 3....2....."

Huey who now force to be a spectator count down as Subterfuge Huey golden armor fallen off like dandriff.. HE become this......groteqsue monster. No longer the shinning knight he was. His eyes now that of sniper scopes. A head of the finest jewlery as his arms become torture weapons. Saws, nails, chains. Weapons that do not requite a lot of skill. His body is full of medals. Police reward for being "MODEL CITIZENS" etc etc......it's a chest full of vanity medals as his legs is that......vaguley almost.......human faces on it.

This is a monster who step over others for his justice....as Zenos said. Not even a proper beast. Only someone who know how to trample the mud under his feet. Someone who find his purpose in hunting those who can't fight back and less fortunate then himself and take joy in his "justice". A eye for looking for target only. A head and chest fully symolize his greed and his own inflated ego. Arms that only hurt others and legs that raised him up by literally stepping over others.

The monster glitch.

It's not even speaking human anymore. It open it's mouth as a gun comes out of it. A last desprate attempt to kill Zenos. A beam with the intention of blowing Zenos up to ash. It's flickering between dozen other forms as Zenos have DAMAGE this thing EGO and make him go beserk. Losing his sense of self. It's just a mindless beast wanting him dead cause Zenos hurt it's wittle feelings.

DOES THE BEAM ACTUALLY HIT SHIT BE A DIFFERENT STORY.

the fight continues, then.

it matters not what form his opponent takes, only that they are still moving. satisfaction was to be found even in insects that lived after a kill—earthworms with five hearts instead of one, cicadas who shed old shells for new.

the thanatosis of huey as hyur was thus equally welcomed, waited for, and even grander in scale: gaudy with the struggle to live, forgoing what was mortal for machines of monstrous scale.

zenos senses the build-up to the blast and stills for it to hit, his magical shield flickering into existence as the beam crashes against its surface. ripples are sent across its surface and carry on to the buildings behind him, screaming scars into concrete and metal while glass windows shattered to rain upon the ground...

but of course, zenos still stands in the aftermath.

"At last you expend some effort," the prince mutters while bits of dust fall from his hair.

"An almost adequate showing. I would have you give me the rest of it, or die in the attempt."

he shakes off the rest of the debris while raising his scythe—and a single teleport later, stands by the fake to slash through one of his arms.

The pressure seal on a can being opened was the closest sound to what happened. An absolute cavalcade of slime exploded from behind the door into the next room. It was thick, grey-white, and on some parts, a rich flesh pink. With no indication of what it was or how it was even functioning, the deluge of ooze washed into the next room.

Steam spewed from it, the sludge so hot to the touch that it boiled the air it occupied space in. The door buckled under the weight of such a heavy monster, and the scalding flesh warped the wood and peeled paint off of the space. Arms spring from the depths of the slime, reaching out for the poor unfortunate soul that happened to live in the same residential area as her.

Her poor victim? Her neighbor, sporting the fine crackle of energy that these inverted persons seemed to have to drive away their primes. Each one she killed was one step closer to this inconvenience being over.

There was pleasure in the hunt as well. There was pleasure in being horrifying, in terrifying every person she came across and watching that fear escalate to panic. She can't deny any of it. It was her choice to start ravenously eating the other inverted.

"Come here."

The ripple of a voice that comes out of the monster is source-less, and ambient as a curvy torso erupts from the slime, grabbing on to this poor creatures' clothes and intending to drag him into the pit of flesh.

It's so abrupt, and so unrepentant. There's no explanations among a world that had descended into chaos.

zenos staggers back with enough alacrity to avoid the first flood of sludge, but more overwhelm it in succession, flowing over his feet and brushing past shins at temperatures hot enough to blister skin instantly. pain sends him stumbling into his bed and falling backwards onto the mattress—a lucky break, as it turns out, when the ooze starts flooding the rest of his room.

this inversion has been raised to be quiet, to turn blind eyes and deaf ears to harm and hurt so as to live peacefully in the shadows. yet he is no stranger to threats on his life, and scrambles upright as soon as he regains his balance.

what is its purpose here, its motive? there is no throne to defend, no crown to give up; he cannot fathom that stray monsters stalk the pipes of the housing here without at least some news leaking out of the horrific aftermath.

"No," he blurts out, even as she (it?) sprouts limbs to grab his shirt.

there is no life that would willingly walk into death when asked, not while its purpose remained unfulfilled. he has yet to find his own—eyes dart to the desk, to his books and his notes—as he picks up whatever's nearby (unfortunately, just a pillow) to push the scorching claws back, his other struggling to pull off his shirt as he fights to stay in place.

horror has yet to sink its teeth into his senses; it is adrenaline that fuels him first, and speeds up his thinking to resist and react.
