I guess this is how I’m processing what we’re all going through right now. I had the stray thought, “What is Spider-Man doing during all this?” and this happened. On the one hand, it’s kinda sloppy and inconsistent, but on the other hand, I had the idea Sunday night and I’m posting this Wednesday night. 5 color pages in 4 nights is pretty good work. Anyway. NordVPN is a scam

First of all, a lot of their claims are straight-up lies - it is not at all a serious concern anymore that some hacker in a coffee shop could steal your data over public wifi. They’re just trying to scare you into paying them

VPNs are important, just not for the reasons they describe. They encrypt your data so your ISP can’t spy on it and the destination server can’t personally identify your IP - the problem is, paid VPNs just become a secondary ISP at that point, since they have access to all your traffic unencrypted on the other side, and they know your IP too. If you really want to be anonymous, just using Tor (which is free) makes it virtually impossible for any third party to know both what is being sent and who is sending it. It’s trusted by hackers worldwide!

There are some things VPNs can do that Tor can’t, though. Many sites are able to recognize Tor and block anyone using it, and torrenting is very stressful on the Tor network and generally considered an uncool move (on top of being pretty difficult to set up). I use Tor for most of my browsing, but when it’s blocked or acting up (or when I need to pirate something without my ISP finding out and suing me) I switch to Firefox with Riseup’s free VPN. It’s run by a well-known activist collective, so you know they’re not spying on your data

if you haven’t heard what disney just did to their college program cast members, including the ones who came from other countries, do me a favor and learn about it, talk about it, share it, spread it, i need this to be known. i need this to not go away. they need to face consequences for what they just did to THOUSANDS of employees (most of which are under the age of 25) with such a short notice. please dont let them hide what they just did.

they laid off thousands on saturday, told them to get out of their housing in less than four days, told the ICPs (international college program) employees they need to be out in less than 4 days despite them being in another country on their own during travel bans no longer allowing them to fly home with their work visas no longer extended since they no longer work for the company, they told them that this is for their safety but they dont care that they just threw THOUSANDS of young adults into homelessness during a pandemic. and then they dropped Frozen 2 on disney+ because they needed to cover it. dont let them get away with that.
