He trusts you, Ms. Potts even after his death, he trusts the people he knows that he can fully trust even though you two only met at least once or twice or something he trusts you.” May’s voice was calmer than before, well that was one of her ways on getting people to trust her.

"He may trust me, but that doesn't mean I trust him." Pepper paused. "Wait, what do you mean 'trust'? And not 'trusted'? Agent Coulson is dead, unless there's something you're not telling me." Pepper wouldn't be at all surprised if SHIELD had kept this from her, but the idea of it was still pretty messed up.

The idea of something to help stabilize her was tempting, but she wasn't about to say yes. Not when SHIELD was so dodgy. "I'd rather not. I can live my life as I am, and I'm not going to take any risks by injecting SHIELD stuff into my body. God knows what effect that would have."

"Look Pepper, your secret is safe with me," Carol sighed, running a hand through her cropped hair. "It’s not my place to tell, and I almost understand why you did it, but I have to be honest with you - I don’t know if I can forgive you.”

She licked her lips and gave a shake of her head, “Thing is, I want to. I want to understand and I want to be able to be your friend again.” The blonde paused a moment, gritting her teeth before extending a hand, “What do you say we call this a truce? Work together a bit?”

"I understand if no one can forgive me, and I wouldn't blame anyone if they didn't. But I did this for everyone's safety. I'd rather hurt them with something they can recover from, rather than something fatal." Pepper was wracked with guilt now, and she couldn't look the other woman in the eye. 

"...I want to have a truce. At least, with you. But I don't know what there is to work through. I have to stay dead in the eyes of everyone else, and fighting thugs is my outlet for Extremis now. That's the way things go." She hesitantly reached her hand forward to shake Carol's, but only because she knew Carol wouldn't burn.

As the door swung open, Maria was greeted with a warm smile and a kiss on the cheek that had her blushing. “Hi Pepper,” she replied, a smile on her face, “You look absolutely beautiful.” The flush on her cheeks darkened slightly, “I’ve been well, finally finished unpacking and getting myself situated. How about you?”

Maria certainly wasn't the only one blushing, especially after that compliment. Pepper knew her face was red, but she didn't care that much, because she could hardly take her eyes off Maria. In the time that they had known each other, Pepper had really begun to fall for the former soldier, much faster than she had anticipated. "Thank you, you're incredibly sweet. I've been all right. Business as usual, mostly. But I've been looking forward to this night all week."

Christine berates herself for the surge of empathy she feels for this woman, eating her rice quietly. Get your head in the game, Everhart. There’s nothing to be gained if you decide to get personally invested in people.

The silence stretches between them and Christine catches herself hoping it’ll help put Pepper at ease, then the blonde frowns at herself. Damn. If it’s gonna be like this, there’s no way she’ll be able to keep up her professional composure.

"So what’s the plan?"

She pushes the nearly-empty plate away from herself, raising an eyebrow at Pepper. “It doesn’t sound very satisfying, to hide yourself away and pretend you can keep going as usual.”

"It's not about being satisfying, really," Pepper says, hoping she can keep her composure, because all of Christine's questions have really wound her up. She sips at her ice water like it's her lifeblood, trying to focus on the coolness of the sensation and keep her own temperature down. "It's because it's necessary. My company comes before me, and that's the way this has to be. If I have to make less public appearances now, so be it."

Pepper can't lie and say she's happy about the situation - she's incredibly far from happy. But she isn't about to tell Christine that, when she knows that letting her see even a hint of emotion about this situation will end up in the tabloids somehow.

Adaptation - Natasha and Pepper

"My first, last and only attempt at knitting was a scarf. I think Barton still has it. It doesn’t resemble a scarf." Natasha chuckled. "I think my favorite domestic skill is baking, though. I can get quite elaborate." At least Natasha was getting Pepper calmed down. That was enough in itself. She squeezed Pepper’s hand.

"Feel better after eating a bit?" Natasha asked curiously, tilting her head.

Pepper laughed a little, picturing the disaster of a scarf. "Well, hopefully it's still something that could keep someone warm. Even if it's not necessarily a scarf. And I enjoy baked goods, but I'm terrible at making them, myself."

Pepper blushed a little when Natasha squeezed her hand. "I am, thank you. Just a little bit. I probably need to get into the habit of eating regularly again."

Natasha looked down at her coffee cup, smile growing wider. “Thanks,” she replied. She didn’t want to stay on the conversation of her hair for too long though it was nice to hear a compliment like that. “Your sense of style is much better than mine, every time I’ve seen you you’ve looked so well put together and amazing.”

Pepper hoped she wasn't blushing too much, because her cheeks certainly felt warm now, after all these compliments. "Thank you," she said, brushing her hair behind her ear subconsciously. "Part of it comes with the territory - I have to dress a certain way in the business world. You might think a little differently of me if you saw me in my house clothes." She laughed a little, faintly.

Natasha smiled, tangling her legs in Pepper’s. “Mm, glad you’ll provide me with both. It’s not too warm, it feels good, soothing,” she said. She was more comfortable than she had been in a long time and with having no where to be, she began to feel like she could drift off again. “We’ll have to unpack sometime soon, huh? And go to the grocery store,” she mused, in no rush to get those things done.

"I'm glad. Extremis is good for something, at least." Pepper slipped closer so her body was flush up against Natasha's, warming her up. She ran her hand over Natasha's back, being careful around her injured shoulder. "We do have to unpack and get groceries, you're right. But you're making it really hard to get up."

Vacation - Bobbi and Pepper

A vacation had been a long time in coming for Bobbi and Pepper, mostly because they both had been insanely busy. They finally managed to schedule a week off at the same time, and Pepper had just finished her last shift before the vacation, resisting the urge to work overtime. She made her way back to their shared apartment, hoping Bobbi would be home.

To say Maria was happy with where she was in her life would be an understatement. If anything, the Marine was ecstatic - she had a place to call home, a steady job, and a stable relationship. Yet, despite all of this she was nervous for the night to come.

She was headed over to Pepper’s place for dinner, her, well, soulmate she supposed, was cooking for them. She was wearing a red dress that cut off at her knees with a leather jacket thrown on over top as she waited outside Pepper’s door, working up the nerves to knock before waiting to be let in.

When Pepper heard the knock at the door, she felt her heart jump a little. She still got nervous when she and Maria had dates, although she was getting used to this now. She hoped that the food would be good, and that Maria would enjoy herself. She made her way to the door, opening it for Maria. She smiled when she saw the other woman, immediately captivated by her.

"Hi, Maria. You look wonderful." Pepper couldn't help but break into a warm smile, and she gave the other woman a brief kiss on the cheek when she entered. "How've you been?"

This soulmate thing had been shocking at first, but as time passed, Pepper was finding that it wasn't so bad at all. Maria complemented her in more ways than she realized, and it was just starting to hit her how good they were for each other. They were still in the dating phase, and hadn't really gotten closer than that, but Pepper was liking where things were going.

Tonight was a bit different than the other dates had been - Pepper was having Maria over for dinner for the first time. She was more than a little nervous, but she had managed to cook a nice dinner for the two of them. She wore a semi-casual cocktail dress for the occasion, and now all there was to do was sit and wait. Maria would be here soon, but she felt like she might die of nerves in the meantime.
