i like him a normal amount
It makes me so sad when a story portrays an abusive relationship and people’s takes are either “why won’t they kill their abuser” or victim-blaming.
I am frustrated about certain parts of gozyuger’s story but Rikuo has always acted realistically when it comes to Rei. It becomes so obvious how little people understand abuse when they watch a story about it.
Rikuo still loving Rei, Rikuo feeling like it’s his fault, Rikuo taking the blame for Rei’s actions, Rikuo not telling Sumino, Rikuo wanting to save Rei, and Rikuo not wanting to kill him; now you won’t believe this but these are normal feelings for abuse victims to have.
I admit I’ve had a hard time with his story because of how it handles Sumino. That’s a part of my overall frustration with women getting sidelined in toei toku. It’s critique not against Rikuo’s story or Rei’s character but a bigger issue spanning beyond those two.
Rikuo is well-written and well-acted. As is Rei. Comments like “REI NEEDS TO DIE” are fine. But comments that keep insisting that Rikuo should kill him are completely missing the mark.
This is a show aimed at kids and I feel that Rikuo’s and Rei’s situation is portrayed in a way that kids can understand. But apparently I’m wrong about that since adult fans can’t stop being mad that Rei lived.
Again, people make these stupid takes every time there’s an abusive relationship in a story. People screaming for nuance and depth and twisted relationships but show them Rikuo and Rei and they simply can’t handle it.
I think the shame and guilt that came with being groomed negatively impacted how Rikuo looks at relationships of all types. And while he's charming and a people person, a lot of it is superficial, if not most of it.
I think that's why Hoeru connecting with him meant so much to him. I think that's why this team means so much to him. It's the closest he's gotten. But now with Rei back that shame is eating at him again.
The way Rikuo reacts to what Rei says is pretty clear that Rikuo blames himself. For the incident that hurt Rei of course as that's what the latter is using to manipulate him. But that also means he likely feels guilt and shame about the rest of the situation too.
The way he apologises before shooting, the way he sounds so distraught and dejected. It's shame and disgust with himself.
The myth of the perfect victim directly impacts Rikuo's view of himself and what happened. He literally Cannot be the perfect victim. And in an industry based on looks and reputation I don't think that ever ever left him, even when he was forced out of the game.
Others have gone into details picking apart his character song and his physical acting in the confrontation with Rei so I won't go too into that. But his movements and facial expressions are really well acted. For me you could really see the moment the horror was dawning on Rikuo.
It was one thing when he heard what Sumino said. He could still tell himself there'd been a misunderstanding. But having Rei confirm it makes the horror very real. And it leaves a victim with an even worse feeling;
"I could have prevented it had I said something."
Realistically, no he couldn't have. But I think the thought process adds to the way he feels about himself. It adds to how he approaches and attacks his team.
I hope we get to learn more about why/how Rikuo and Ryugi teamed up in the first place. Ryugi being older than him and seemingly put together was probably actually something really good for Rikuo's state of mind.
Rikuo is a complex character strung up by charisma and the flare of the entertainment industry. Not only is he a victim to his own industry, but to how he got there in the first place.
hey zac, hey ally, wya i just wanna talk
ricky and pete arent here bc i havent seen the unsleeping city yet! will probably add them when i get to it lol
