Medieval - for the seventh day of @dennorweek

In Norway, the medieval times is the period from the end of the viking age in 1066 and until the reformasion in 1537. Norway and Denmark’s relationship throughout these times were rocky at best. After the Norwegian civil war and the Black Death, Norway got a shared monarch with Sweden before they both entered the Kalmar union with Denmark. All the countries was supposed to have an equal status in this relationship, but as the Norwegian royal line had become Swedish, Norway had a very weakened nobility and so less influence than the other two. The Dniash crown very much saw this as an opportunity to seize land in Norway and give it to their own nobility - so now Norwegian farmers had to pay and work for an Danish upper-class based in Copenhagen, that they had never met. Still, on the paper the two countries were still equal, and that was the terms given when Sweden left the union and it became Denmark-Norway. However, this all changed in 1537 with the reformasion being forced on a deeply catholic Norway by a protestant Denmark, mainly as a tool to give the Danish king even more power over the land that had previously been owned by the very powerful church. Even though there were some restitance, poor Norwegian farmers could do nothing against armed Danish soldiers. The Danish king declared Norway just another Danish province, just another region in Denmark, but this didn’t change anything as it was against the contract of the Kalmarunion, which Denmark-Norway as based on. Nonetheless, the end of the medieval period saw Denmark trying to gain more and more control over Norway. The time spent under Danish rule is still called “The four houndred year night” in Norway.
