I like how arkco's mothers can be read as foils to one another in a way where their contrasting roles build up to their daughters' respective ontologies

Conversely, Coco's mother stuck to her like she was the thread holding their life together, so Coco has set on a race against nature's forces in order to save everyone and prove she will stay

Coco is a museum of all she's loved and all that loved her and she reiterates it relentlessly in the story both through action and with words. She is a conduit for art and an art herself and I think there's nothing more beautiful than that

One of my many Agott hcs is she wants so badly to say her favourite genre of writing is nonfiction, but it's been fables since she was little and there's nothing she can do about it

What I find greatly compelling about witch hat's political dimension is it acknowledges forbidden magic as the messy spectrum that it is, even when the law is forced to label it One Whole Object to prevent loopholes; it acknowledges that the 'forbidden' in forbidden magic is a man made attribution, not an inborn trait

It's easy to frame the brimmed caps as the bane of all existence by nature, undeserving of a place anywhere but in their own secret societies, alien to the story of heroes, but instead, they're treated as cornerstones of the story. The idea of heroes is toppled and they're acknowledged not as some otherworldly, foreign force, but as witches preceding the pact, pointed caps and commoners going one step too many in the eyes of the law

These decisions make all the difference; the story is so much more immersive, because it allows nuance to exist even if it demands more effort

My contribution to the debate revolving the notion of 'morally grey' qifrey is that calling him or any isolated character 'morally grey' is redundant & superfluous because the narrative of witch hat deconstructs the "good vs bad" & "hero vs villain" tropes we're familiar with, rendering just about everyone as 'morally ambiguous'

And that's ignoring the topic of whether the original claim even holds water

With or without context "of the torch" is such a fun blend of respectable & endearing that it baffles me. They were plagued by visions from beyond when they made this olruggio guy

I really like when editors associate witch hat with the part of Under Pressure that calls love an "old fashioned word that dares us to care for people at the edge of the night and change our way of caring about ourselves" because to me love is the lynchpin of this story. Whether familial, platonic, romantic, or a secret third thing, like a love for magic, so much of the story is driven by love and I think that's such a valuable lesson, especially at a time of divide and infighting
