“I suppose you’re right…” He mutters softly. Qinghua’s words were truely touching– just speaking to her on the issue soothed his anxious thoughts. He remained quiet for just a moment before speaking.
“It’s just those who died who haunt me. Those who I failed…” He shakes his head slowly and gives a small smile towards Qinghua. He takes a moment to search her face with his own eyes, a saddened look just vaguely appearing on his face.
“How do I know just being there for you wasn’t enough… I couldn’t do anything to help you… if anything, all I ever did was make things worse for you…” His voice cracks and he averts his gaze again.
“They haunt me too...” She tried not to make him feel more depressed, but it was difficult when any personification had memories and lives haunting their past. “I -- also wish there were more people I could have saved.”
She sighed, leaning backward a bit trying to relax so as not to remember too much. “You never made things any worse for me. Do you remember when we were exchanging letters even while Mister England was screening them? Remember 1925? The people in Shanghai didn’t have any leverage in such a protest. I thought the deaths of my people were going to be forgotten.” She closed her eyes, she didn’t like remembering how much she was shut in and ignored.
“But you remembered longer than anyone else, even when Britain decided the shooting was completely justified. I could keep going, even put things behind me, because I knew someone understood.”
What about me? “You protect what you can – Not even the one that you protest against could protect all of his people. I’m sure you know that very well.”
But perhaps Yao had never directly shot at Xiang the way he did to her. She couldn’t be sure.
“What I can is not enough… I couldn’t protect them then. I can’t protect them now.” His voice is low and he avoids all eye contact with her. “It doesn’t matter if he couldn’t either… what matters is that I couldn’t protect my own. I’ve never been strong enough to do it…”
He takes a moment to glance at her before looking away once more.
"香哥，you've always been so strong..." Perhaps it's true, they were never really strong enough for anything, really. They were just forced to endure. "You might not be able to protect all of them, but the people that you managed to protect would have died without you."
A quieter voice murmurs the next few words.
"And... You've been there for me so many times, even when it was impossible to travel across the country. I definitely did not feel alone. Even now I feel less alone when you're there. ... I don't really count since I'm not really one of your people, but... You're so much stronger than you say."
