his father jumped into the lake and wrestled with a goddamn alligator, trying to save his son, and had to walk back out of that lake knowing he had just let his baby boy’s life go down an alligator’s throat

Explain why 90% of the people said that mother should have died instead of the gorilla. Explain why within hours the fathers decades old mild ass criminal history was front page, wtf does that have to do with anything? I have yet to see anyone saying those white parent should have died instead of their child or any petty criminal history brought up. Unlike you I have sympathy for both but I’m not going to sit here and act like y'all don’t treat the two differently. I don’t need to be quite about the way y'all treat black and white tragedies differently. Both parent made a simple mistake but y'all only blamed the black ones. The 1st difference is the 2 year old died a horrible death. And the gorilla was a beloved intelligent animal as opposed to a nameless, mindless reptile. Also the family at Disney world was right there when it happened. Reckless maybe, but not an arguable case of neglect. It takes a serious lack of respect to politicize this incident when a family just lost their child in a scenario so unimaginable. Let’s not turn every single tragedy into a “it’s because of black” argument. That’s destroys our credibility as young people trying to make a difference where it is needed. Let’s stop fishing for notes and choose our battles wisely.

Nothing has destroyed credibility. Just because it’s not important to you, doesn’t mean it’s not to anyone else. Imma speak up when I see double standards around tragedies. You’re a moron of you can’t see how the two cases were drastically handled differently in the media. I can acknowledge a loss and also call out the bullshit at the same time. I think it’s important to note the heavy applause and reaffirmation of her worth after she said she wasn’t the “role model” figure many wanted her to be (as in, be less sexual, dressing less scantily, etc.) I think it was amazing that all those Black women in the audience let her know that what she does in her own security was okay, and that she should still be allowed to be sexually expressive, swear, be mean or fierce when she chooses to be. This was a really beautiful program.
