Quantum Soul - Tribe12 EP

Those who have followed dubstep from its early days will be familiar with seminal Leeds based label Ranking Records, whose 2nd release in 2007 featured a collab between 4 of the stable’s producers entitled “Captain Hawkeye”. The release has remained one of my favourites not least because of it’s engaging and original sound, but also because it introduced me to the sound one of my most favourite producers.

The following year I was in BM Soho and came across a release on Dubting which featured 2 solo tracks from the same producer which really caught my attention - there was a high level of production and intricate use of percussion combined with dubwise aesthetics that was lacking from much of the other dubstep being released at that time…

I noticed the name of that same producer popping up more often on the racks of records shops over the next couple of years - notching up 8 vinyl releases between ‘07 and '10 which included more solo outings on Dubting and Dubbed Out as well as collabs with Ruckspin and a solo feature on Ranking, but then things went quiet for a while…

31 year old Guy Chambers aka Quantum Soul never stopped writing music - and in the interval since his last release some new material has surfaced in mixes by myself, BunZer0, Ruckspin and a handful of others trusted to spread the Quantum sound. Demonstrating an uncompromising approach to his musical philosophy, Guy continued to experiment with his sound as exemplified in the collaborative project Cymatic, with 4 tracks seeing vinyl release on the Box Clever imprint in 2010 and 2011 - you can hear them in this mix

Dubstep music has exploded over the last 2 years, but lets not get involved in the better/worse argument… It now it seems as though Quantum Soul is truly ready to showcase the development of his sound and how it fits in to this constantly changing scene, and something tells me that people are ready to hear it… Supported by J.Robinson, Quantum Soul is now primed to release the “Self Knowledge EP” on the relatively new but already consistent Tribe12 imprint - the man himself says…

“Quantum Soul is a long time dub-head, and advocate for the deep as well as the heavy aspects of what has come to be labelled 'bass music’. Initially drawn into the dubstep scene in 2007 due to his association with Ranking Records, Quantum has had numerous releases on many labels over the years. He has never been one to shout about his sound, instead preferring it to evolve organically and to find its own place in the 'scene’, wherever that happens to be. Those familiar with his music will know that Quantum stands for timelessness and the pursuit of perfection - something which he acknowledges is never possible, but that is well worth striving for. For people unfamiliar with his sound, it would be fatuous to say 'it speaks for itself’. The best way to describe it is that it is built with the purpose of sounding as if it were grown, and that it is intended to enliven the body and well as enlighten the mind. Quantum Soul is inspired by the sounds of the universe, which is to say, he draws influences from all the myriad of sonics which intrigue him”.

This 4 track outing on Tribe12 displays Guy’s diverse influence and technical production skills; with a selection of tunes that incorporate more straightforward dubwise riddims as well as darker, tribal beats - something that will appeal to every dubstep listener…
