I gathered up a few of images of the Earth and the Moon, taken by various spacecraft through recent and not so recent history. From top to bottom, and in chronological order, they are:

1. An image of Earth and the Moon taken by NASA’s Voyager 1 when it was 11.66 million kilometers from Earth, on 18th of September 1977. This is the first image of its kind ever taken by a spacecraft.

2. This image was taken by the Galileo spacecraft as it flew by, eight days after its encounter with the Earth-Moon system on 16th of December 1992. Image was taken from a distance of about 6.2 million kilometers.

3. This image was taken by the NEAR spacecraft as it flew by the Earth-Moon system on 23rd of January 1998, 19 hours after the spacecraft swung by Earth on its way to the asteroid 433 Eros. Taken from 400000km away, approximately the distance between the Earth and the Moon.

4. An image of Earth and the Moon (3rd of October 2007) taken from Martian orbit by “The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment” (HiRISE) camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Keep in mind that the distance between the Earth and the Moon is much larger than it appears on those pictures. The reason the Moon appears so large is due to perspective.

Just perhaps

Yesterday when I was travelling in a train to attend my tuitions, a double-amputee (both legs) salesman (he definitely had a better body language so I thought I would refrain from calling him a hawker) using his cruiser-board (the wooden skate they use to travel; regular railway commuters can relate) boarded my compartment. He was selling covers for railways passes, passports, ration cards and stuff……I was in no need of the so I didn’t bother taking a look. When the train reached my destination I, the salesman along with a few other commuters came near door to alight from the train.

Suddenly a guy (perhaps in his early 30’s, PS I’m really bad at guessing age) asked the salesman “How much do you earn daily?” salesman replied “Enough to keep him alive and able to work the next day” the guy continues, ”How much about 200-250” salesman with a dejected face says “About 100 or so”. The guy then asks, “Where do you live?” salesman says “The upcoming train-stop” the man then says “Good, meet me then”. Salesman has a very confused look upon his face; me too; the man then checks his pockets and mildly utters “Looks like I don’t have my business cards” unloads his bag from his shoulder, checks for something removes a paper, a pamphlet, and gives it to the salesman who immediately starts analysing it; and says “Meet me soon”. I tried to take a quick look and it looked like some employment providing organisation to me. The guy then asks “Till which grade have you attended school?” Before the salesman could take his eyes off the pamphlet and answer the station arrived and we got off the train…..the salesman stayed inside, still confused……..

I really wanted to ask the guy what was in that salesman’s future but couldn't get hold of him…..I’d like to think that the salesman is perhaps employed at a more healthy environment, perhaps “earning” better amount of money…….and just perhaps what I think is true I’d like to say:- http://goo.gl/ZWc93
