Did the Valar abandon Middle-earth?
I've seen debates like this on the Internet.
On one hand, the Valar were the Powers of Arda.
They had the strength to confront Morgoth.
They had wisdom.
They had authority.
Yet for a long time, they remained in Valinor while Middle-earth was consumed by fear, darkness, and suffering.
This leads to the accusation:
They sheltered themselves in Aman while the other peoples faced the Shadow alone.
But there is another side to the story.
The Valar were not merely warriors.
Every intervention they made had the potential to reshape—or even devastate—the world itself.
Against Morgoth, overwhelming force could become a catastrophe.
Moreover, they summoned the Elves to Aman as a place of protection, light, and refuge.
But that decision also divided the peoples.
Not everyone went.
Many remained behind.
And Middle-earth continued to stand exposed.
So the great question is:
Were the Valar wise...
or were they negligent?
Did they protect Arda...
or abandon those who needed them the most?
