Let’s Go Pikachu (from Viridian Forest)
Ok, so I purposefully kind of kept away from any promotional material for this game because I wanted to be surprised! I saw GIFs and stuff so I knew some things, but I did not know anything about how the game operated.
So far I’m in the Viridian Forest and I love it!
Anyways, let me start off by talking about Digimon World 2 and Pokemon Go.
Now in the main Pokemon games you capture Pokemon, and unless you want a team of 6 of the same Pokemon, or unless you need two to breed with, you normally just catch one of each Pokemon in the game. This works nicely, yes, but Let’s Go has changed how this works!
In Digimon World 2, there was a mechanic that I absolutely loved. You don’t just befriend one Digimon to raise and bring with you on battles: you befriend tons of all the ones available. This is because you need them to strengthen your team as a whole. The way it works is that each Digimon has a “max level”, and you have to combine it with another Digimon to raise the level (which involves a little math, an equation that I personally will remember to my death because I love this game). It’s pretty fun to be able to just get as many creatures on your team as possible!
In Pokemon Go I felt this mechanic come back to life! Suddenly you need to catch tons of Rattata instead of just one, because you need the extra Rattata to strengthen the one you want to keep! It’s so much fun to just keep catching them! I thought this was really cool.
So in Pokemon Let’s Go, you have to do the same! Catch TONS of each Pokemon to progress! This has so far been super fun and I really enjoy it! It makes me remember playing DW2 and how neat I thought it was back then.
The only thing I miss in Let’s Go is the ability to battle wild Pokemon, but I understood why that was switched out. Instead, when you catch a Pokemon your Pokemon get EXP. That works, I just really enjoy the battle grind, hah! In a way this one is much faster and a little less annoying in that I don’t have to be running back and forth to the Pokemon Center to heal after 2 encounters in the beginning.
Also I just caught a Very Large Pikachu and how can you beat that?
Anyways there are going to be a lot more new things that I don’t know about yet, because I did just start! I’m very excited!
