Hello, everyone!
Here's the last entry of my newsletter, where I talk a little bit of what's going on in my life, discuss what's to come re: my original writing, and give a few recommendations ^-^
i really hope modern writers don't focus on "not offending people". offending people is a baseline requirement for good art. if your art doesn't offend anyone, you've created nothing. people today worry way too much about giving offense rather than creating a world in which being offended isn't seen as a negative, but rather an opportunity for character development.
goldfinchwrites - a writeblr intro
Hello - I'm Lottie, and I'm making a tentative return to writeblr. I've been here on and off for years but I've missed it and thus am returning. A little about me:
I'm 26 years old, based in the UK and use she/her pronouns.
I'm been writing since I was 15, got my degree in English Literature and then last year completed a Master's in Creative Writing.
I like to write literary fiction most, but am partial to the gothic and including touches of horror and magical realism. I've also written a little poetry and am looking to return to it as well.
I have one finished manuscript that I'm currently querying and another that's just sitting there and I'm considering getting beta readers for, and then at present I'm not really sure what I want to write now. Both of them are quite different in terms of tones and theme so it's become difficult to categorise what sort of fiction I like to write.
That said, things that tend to come up: the misery of small town England, particularly in the West Country/Cotswolds, country houses, the late 20th Century, queer themes, nature and the environment, and casts of very unlikable people.
The authors I'm presently most inspired by are Shirley Jackson, Donna Tartt, Bret Easton Ellis, Carmen Maria Machado, Sayaka Murata and Evelyn Waugh, but, in essence, my reading taste is 20th Century Classics.
I find myself at a loss to what I will write next, so hopefully I can use this blog to track whatever that will become.
I'm looking to follow some writeblrs - especially litfic writeblrs, and dip my toe back into the community!
I want to start posting more over here again...
DANA AND LUCRETIA
I promised I’d share a little bit of my original writing this month. It’s a little later than I would’ve liked, but here it is: a short story (about 5.1k words) set in “Underground Elysium”.
A visionary vampiress, belonging to a matriarchal society of vampires with praying mantis-like habits, saw the apocalypse as an opportunity to subjugate humanity and elevate her species in a new world order, after the outside world became inhospitable to humans. Between the choice of risking falling prey to the walking, rotting corpses that roam the exterior, and a life of servitude under the civilised blood-sucking monsters underneath, many submitted to the second option. Nonetheless, there’s those even among her own that don’t appreciates living under Lucretia’s iron fist; around every corner a conspiracy against her brews, right as election season approaches.
This story would serve as a prequel of sorts, offering a window to the beginnings of Lucretia’s dynamic with Dana, the main antagonist. I hope you enjoy it!

I was thinking about how yes, I significantly reduced the main cast in the redstart's ledger, but I definitely kept the characters that concentrated the "mismatched outlaws with mommy issues" them.
Zira: yeah so, my mother may or may not be death. her world-famous disappearance made her really popular among the true crime weirdos in my planet.
Alegría: my mother basically adopted me as a prop, and dropped at the first (admittedly disastrous) mistake I made at 15, deciding I was too much trouble and leaving me to fence for myself.
Alastair: my mother was so freaked out by my psychic powers she tried to drown me in a tub when I was a child. then she sold me to a royal family.
Latoya: ....... well I couldn't POSSIBLY top all of that [mother is a mass murdering dictator]. Leena: I grew up in an orphanage, so I don't have mommy issues. the others: no surrogate figures at all? mommy issues don't forgive. Leena: oh. Then yeah, I fucked my mom.
for a while now, I've been thinking of making a (bi?)monthly substack newsletter, like I've seen other writeblrs do. it's different in my fandom blog, but I've been more detached from the writeblr side of things in tumblr and other platforms and I want to see if diving into something more involved will lead to more focus on my original writing, and to more enthusiasm when it comes to share it.
lately I've been writing a few short stories, because due to some RL complications and other commitments I find the idea of tackling bigger projects too taxing (all the short stories are technically part of a longer project -the redstart's ledger, the wicked witches of trickstown, and the travels of soyolmaa, respectively-, but they're very focused, with a smaller scop, and thus manageable for me at the moment).
my intention would be to post the first one of those short stories (one about captain latoya before she was captain latoya) by the end of october/beginning of november, although I plan to write a more introductory first newsletter to get things going.
other than original writing itself, the idea is to offer writing updates (and maybe some personal updates if I feel like it lol), thoughts on writing in general, and more than likely, recommendations (or teardowns!) of art I've found inspiring, one way or another.
let me know if you're interested, and if we're mutuals, feel free to send me a link to your own newsletter to check it out ^-^
november it's definitely a no-go, so I've decided I'll start this with the new year instead. I want to have the first few entries a bit more prepared and that'll give me the time I need.

I don’t have any blond male OCs anymore and I feel left out wrt those text posts about blond men
i get random embryonic ideas that i type into my little notes app from everywhere, but the two types of media that almost never fail to plant the seed are a.) weird fucked up sff/horror comics and b.) >15 minutes long short films that feel like you've taken hallucinogenics.
“The only way either one of us is escaping this is when we draw our last breaths.” “You won’t kill me.” “No…” he said softly, “I have something else in mind for you.” A twitch of alarm rippled through her, a dormant survival instinct, but it was enough to make her turn herself invisible. “We’ve played this game before, Laila… you know you can’t hide from me.”
the vaguest of vague book 3 snippets because [gestures wildly]
it's been a long time since i've shared any writing on here, so here's the first lines of the drafts i worked on during workshop :)
I Cut the Bull from My Belly
Pasiphae’s body is mottled purple and yellow and red. The surgeon’s fingers, as gentle as they are, sink into her flesh as easily as if she were made out of figs.
A Ghost Hunts the Azurelark
A ghost rides in the misty fields of Velinore. Karta Mandal sees her in the early morning, as he pours his chai into a mug and gazes out of the bay window, intending to enjoy the subtle purple sunrise for the first time since he returned to his childhood home.
BRIDE / BUTCHER / DOE
A woman drags a white doe out of the ice room; it hangs from the ceiling rails by two brass hooks, one caught beneath its pelvis and the other behind the scapulae. As she pulls, all the while, the metal wheels whine.
The Wolf Risha Hunts the Stag who Cannot Die
In the fading shadows of dawn, a hunter meets a wolf with white eyes, a wolf whose mouth stretches open and in its growl there are three faraway voices, distorted as if heard through water, so the hunter shoots, once; he does not wait to see what he has done.
See, by the Moon’s Eye, the Hand of Astraea Returns
Tongue lolling, the soldier’s mare drops her head low and sniffs. A dismembered hand reaches up to stroke the velvet skin between her nostrils.
I should NOT be this surprised that (re)watching The Sopranos is giving me extra brainworms regarding "Underground Elysium"... ofc Tony Soprano IS one natural influence of Lucretia (how could he not be? he's the blueprint), but as I develop Constanza, Lucretia's mother, and I see Livia Soprano on the show being... the kind of mother that she is... damn, yeah. this should've been more obvious to me xDD
