It was a risk, choosing university over a full-time job, especially when every dollar mattered. Especially when custody of their younger sister still hung in the balance. Jacquetta had every right to be upset… but knowing that didn’t stop the hurt. This was the first real rift that had ever opened between them, sharp and unfamiliar. Up close, the girl was even more stunning.

“       Well, I— I’m not very good at art,      ”       Arlise admitted, voice soft but not quite shy. She didn’t mention she’d never tried photography at all. Somehow the words felt too small, too exposing, under that bright and easy smile.

The sound of the brunette’s voice landed warm and sweet in Winter’s chest, settling there in a way she hadn’t expected. Instinct urged her to slow down—to do this right. Winter could read it all over the girl’s posture, the careful way she spoke, the way her eyes held something heavier than nerves. This wasn’t someone to rush. This was someone to know.

Her last relationship had burned bright and fast, headlong and reckless. She hadn’t questioned it then. But standing here now, Winter felt something different stirring—something steadier. She wanted to learn the stories hidden behind those eyes. Wanted to know what made her laugh unexpectedly, what kind of sadness she carried, what movie she’d rewatch when she needed comfort. She wanted to know everything.

And she was willing—more than willing—to start as friends.

She had no desire to mess this up. The girl had already unearthed a feeling Winter didn’t quite have words for yet, something hopeful and terrifying all at once. Her gut whispered this matters, and Winter almost laughed at herself for it. She didn’t even know the girl’s name. Still, she couldn’t deny the pull.

She realized she’d been staring a heartbeat too long, but tearing her gaze away felt impossible. The girl was simply… beautiful.

“Well, see, that’s the thing about art,” Winter said at last, her voice light but sincere as she leaned in just a little, lowering it like a shared secret. “It’s subjective.”

A soft smile curved her lips. “And I’m willing to bet you’re being way too hard on yourself.”

She extended a flyer toward the brunette, hope threading through the gesture. “We’re really not the judgmental type. Mostly we just like creating things, making a mess, and hyping each other up.” Her smile tilted, playful. “Very low-pressure. Very supportive.”

Winter remembered her own first day—the chaos, the overwhelm, the feeling that every wrong choice might somehow ruin everything. Her expression softened.

“And,” she added gently, “it’s a pretty great way to make new friends.”

Her gaze flickered—brief, almost unconscious—from the girl’s deep brown eyes to her mouth and back again, before she caught herself.

“I’m Winter,” she said, offering another smile, warmer now. “It’s really nice to meet you.”

It was the first day of Welcome Week, and Winter was on the prowl.

The campus buzzed with fresh faces—mostly freshmen dragging suitcases, clinging to printed schedules, and staring around like they’d stepped into another dimension. Returning students mingled in, serving as guides, club reps, or simply orbiting the chaos for entertainment. Winter fit neatly into the second category.

She’d broken up with her girlfriend at the end of last semester—a clean break after a year and a half—and though she’d let herself mourn it over the summer, she had decided that college’s last spin around the sun was not going to be spent moping. If anything, Welcome Week felt like the universe handing her a reset button.

Winter always threw herself into these events. Freshman year, she’d been on the receiving end—lost, overwhelmed, but instantly swept into campus life when someone handed her a bright orange flyer for the art and photography club. Every year after, she’d come back as part of the crew, greeting newcomers and trying to coax creative souls out of the crowds. The club always needed new hands, new eyes, new weirdos to make things interesting.

She stood behind a fold-up table under a collapsible pavilion, a stack of glossy flyers fanned out in front of her. Sunlight filtered through the canopy in warm patches, catching in the silver rings on her fingers as she passed flyers to anyone who approached. She was mid-sentence explaining the club’s darkroom access when she saw her.

The girl was attempting to slip around a cluster of loud upperclassmen, hugging her orientation folder to her chest. Wide-eyed. Clearly overwhelmed. Definitely new. Definitely a freshman.

And definitely adorable.

Winter felt a flicker of interest—sharp, immediate, and distracting. The girl had the exact kind of soft, earnest energy she’d always gravitated toward.

“Hey, you!” Winter called, leaning forward on the table as the girl finally drew close enough. Her voice cut cleanly through the chatter around them. “Interested in joining the art and photography club, beautiful?”
