Earl purposely put down his cup and appears at the door again just to make a heart sign with his hands before he returns to the darkness.
While she was furiously typing out E-mails that Earl took a quick shower (making sure to lock the damn bathroom door) and dress himself into something other than sleepwear. When he returns before her he’s dressed down in simple pants and a t-shirt, the apartment warm enough for that at least. He finds her lying on the couch, comatose, takes his laptop, and goes into the kitchen to work.
It was only later when she appears at his side does he look up from his screen. He’s tried to continue writing the story but the strange events of today have drained him of all his ideas. Instead he’s working on a small political article for a local newspaper. Or was working before she announced the bad news. ”Are you sure? Here…” He flipped the laptop towards her to check her e-mail once more (saving his work beforehand of course).
"Ah…" Earl blinked. "This is the city. There’s… not a free place unless you’re looking at the homeless shelter or you have a friend’s place to stay at." Tapping a finger on the table he swallowed and continued. "Though seeing as I seemed to be involved in this strange situation, insane as it might be, you may stay one more night. One question though: Do I have to lock up the knives?"
Janie gave him a quick smirk and laugh at that little heart gesture. Yet, a quick frown replaced it, almost as though she was scolding herself.
The woman grabbed a chair, pulling it by his side to sit. She scrolled through his laptop, hands still a little jittery, but much calmer than the last time. Then she paused, glancing from him to the screen.
"... You're unusually kind, you know that?" She spent a full minute in quiet, thinking to herself before she spoke again. "... If it makes you feel more comfortable, yes. At this point, I might fear a homeless shelter more than you."
