will’s sexuality journey across the show started before season 4 and it just seems like you guys forget that. his feelings for mike don’t need to be the most important thing about him and he’s still gay without them. lol. and even those are so complicated and tied in with safety and home and comfort

it’s about will’s own coming of age!! and yes it’s sad. but it’s a good thing he realized he didn’t need to rely on his friends and family and mike. just himself. and that he can leave. live out loud in a place that will treat him better.

the whole show started because the town thought will had been hate crimed. will’s whole journey is realizing he wasn’t what the upside down and hawkins told him he was: disposable, weak, a mistake, a freak, better off dead. those words don’t define him. other people don’t define him. will learns to define himself - he has all the answers. his happy ending is to leave home because his home wasn’t good to him in the first place. that much makes sense.

from a narrative standpoint dragging the whole unrequited crush thing in when it was going to go nowhere just made people forget about s1-s3 will.
