The highest-resolution image ever taken toward Sgr A*, the supermassive black hole in the center of our Milky Way galaxy. The ring of light is from hot material swirling around it. The black hole itself cannot be seen, but it swallows light itself, so we see a dark void in the center of the ring
Nice write-up on it by Phil. Looks a lot like the black hole in M87 that this team imaged before, but it's way smaller.
This video bothered me on a visceral level because of a phobia of bees and wasps since childhood. But it’s an excellent little message. Save the bees. Call a beekeeper, not an exterminator.

Heather and Joel have been excitedly awaiting the birth of their son Alexander, their f… Abbie A needs your support for New Mom with COVID a
Hey friends, my oldest best friend is in a tough, scary spot right now. She and her husband have been trying for a baby for a long time and finally got their wish... but things went really, frighteningly sideways this week.
Heather passed out at work Thursday evening and, when she was taken to the hospital, they discovered she'd caught COVID. Between that and the serious risk of complications, they rushed her into an emergency C-section, two months ahead of schedule. Both Heather and the baby, Alexander, made it through, but the danger isn't over yet.
Alexander's lungs weren't quite baked-through all the way yet and he is on a ventilator. He's also separated from both his parents because of the COVID risk. And COVID is kind of kicking Heather's ass, wreaking havoc on her lungs and liver especially.
Alexander and Heather are not out of the woods, and this will likely be weeks in the hospital and round after round of treatments for both.
Heather works in food service at a small, privately owned café in Alabama. She has no health insurance and won't even get paid maternity leave. Her husband's insurance is only going to stretch so far and the medical costs are going to be scary as hell.
I know times are tight right now for everyone, but anything you can chip in will help offset these infuriating, heartbreaking costs, and possibly even help Heather spend a few weeks recovering and bonding with her baby once they are out of the hospital.
In this goddamned pandemic and hundreds of miles away, I am terrified and anxious, and this is the only way I can help. I can only imagine what they are feeling and going through right now, so I am asking you to please help me help them.
If you can, please donate, and if you can't, please boost.
Tl;dr: My friend was pregnant, caught COVID, had to get an emergency C-section 2 months early, and medical costs are about to be a bitch. Please help.
It’s our responsibility, when we’re in the room, to look around and see who’s missing.
Representation matters.
BE THEY DO CRIMES
Fun fact, some suffragettes used a very similar thing to argue that women should be allowed to vote - because if the “he” in voting law doesn’t include women, then neither does the “he” in any other law, so either women can vote and are law-abiding, OR women cannot vote and are free to steal, not pay taxes, etc. Some people went so far as to break laws to make their point! (’What’s Your Pronoun?’ by Dennis Baron is my source, and a good read).
