I remember the first time I saw a gay man. It was on TV. Eastenders, I think. I was about 6 or 7 with my mum in the living room. I don’t remember exactly what was going on in the scene but I think the word ‘gay’ was mentioned. So, like any curious child, I turned to my mum and said “what does gay mean?” And she replied “It means that he’s a man who likes men. Like how a boy would have a girlfriend, he would have a boyfriend.” 

I didn’t know then, but I know now that that small moment, at 6 years old seeing a gay Muslim man on TV, was so very important!

Do you ever get when suddenly all sounds do this weird thing in your head where they like absorb warm water or something and then everything sounds scary. Like I could be listening to my favourite song and then suddenly it gets really heavy and overwhelming and scary and thats usually when I have an anxiety/panic attack

THE GAY AGENDA

Lying awake in bed at 1am last night, this is where my brain went...

Rooks (Castles) = Sexually questioning. In the background quietly ready to swoop in and take out opponents when in clear aim.

Knights (Horses) = Gays & Lesbians. Skipping usual moves and hopping right out there in full gay mode!

Bishops = Bisexuals. Moving in 2 directions, using their invisibility against opposing team.

The King = Asexuals. Doesn’t move a lot. Hiding in the background but secretly dominating the game. 

The Queen = The Ultimate Pansexual. Goes wherever the fuck she wants. Defying all social norms and slaughtering the patriarchy.

Pawns = Straight People™. Frontliners sent in to confuse opponent before the non straights attackkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

this is a problem i see a lot with memes created by younger lgbt ppl and not meant as a vague post about anyone. i just saw something now and it’s on my mind which is why i want to get this off my chest and hopefully educate some younger lgbt ppl in the process:

memes that use the phrase “gay panic” need to be reworded. gay anxiety and gay fear (which should be more popular based on its popularity from queer eye) would be much better phrases to use because they hold none of the historical context that “gay panic” holds

what’s the context of “gay panic”? this: it’s been used in actual courts of law as a defense by homophobes to justify and get them off for brutalizing and murdering gay people (there’s also a “trans panic” defense). the only states in the us that have banned this are california, rhode island, and illinois

a quick google search pulls up the definition right away

most of the cases might not be familiar to younger ppl. however, matthew shepard’a case should be familiar even all these years later. the “gay panic” defense failed in that particular case but it was still employed at first because of its prevelance.

every time i see the words “gay panic” used as a meme it’s like a punch to the gut. no one is intending to invoke this, but that’s what’s happening. i cannot stress enough how important it is to know your history, especially when you’re young and your only source for community is online with other young ppl.

tdlr young gays pls educate yourselves and use different phrases to express what you mean because gay panic is rooted not only in our history but our current lives; it exists as an institutional violence used against us, used to protect those who would seek to do us harm
