Ngl kind of sick of writers and shippers alike using obliviousness as an excuse for piss-poor relationship writing.
Not being knowing a fact doesn’t stop it from being true and having an effect on your life. Paraphrased:
A character who isn’t aware of their own feelings towards someone should not act the exact same way they would if those feelings didn’t exist.
Even if a person is oblivious to being in love they still show signs of, you know, being in love. That usually includes: thinking about their crush more than they think about other people, seeking physical contact with them, feeling warm and fuzzy around that person, deriving strength and inspiration from them, etc etc etc.
Obviously not all of these signs indicate romantic interest and not all romantic interest looks like this, but there should be something between the characters that regular people who don’t wear shipping goggles could pick up on.
Writing a relationship that is painfully, embarassingly one-sided and then going “Oh, they were in love all along! The Clearly Disinterested Character is just a tsundere/incredibly confused!” is a lazy cop-out.
(Especially if the show suddenly becomes all about romance, throwing its previous themes out of the window.)
I sometime feel like rgu fandom sometime misses the fact that anthy being indian have a lot to do with her character than just being brown skin colour. Like you cannot change her ethnicity & race because a lot of things she goes through are literally indian women experiences.
That being said, the last scene of utena apologizing to anthy for pretending to be a prince can be explored for gender roles sure, but I never see anyone talk about how she was trying to protect anthy entire time when anthy never asked her once. That's something she decided herself, & this is coming from a place with only love for utena as character, she did played saviour role for anthy because she saw her as someone weak who should be helped & saved than someone who is capable to fight her abuser. The scene when anthy stabs utena clearly shows that, utena pushing anthy behind her as way to be shield just to get stabbed by anthy, something she did not expected from her.
The concept of being prince is interesting since it's constantly glorified in mainstream media but the princes in utena were shown as arrogant & misogynistic no different from villains & utena as someone constantly trying to be one of them because she have this positive idea of princehood without realizing how harmful it really is. A prince is somebody who is powerful & protects the weak, specifically princesses but who said the princesses are weak & helpless in first place? Isn't in end, it's the prince's ego & arrogance? Is being a prince really that good thing as people make it out to be? Are princes any different from other men? In most stories princes never tries to understand & help princesses stand up & fight but barge in to be self proclaimed protector. And to be someone like that is never really a good idea.
Ik the post is a bit all over the place so let me elaborate the anthy being indian thing.
Watching anthy just follow everything what akio said even if it hurts her & not doing what she wanted is kind of relatable since growing up as indian girl child that is something what we are taught from young age to behave properly, never offend anyone & not show your emotions much, be it sadness or happiness. I remember being like 7 & watching my relatives tell my sister that a bride shouldn't smile on her own wedding so anthy is behaving like a doll as others wanted & only being herself when she thought nobody was watching her was pretty understandable. Though it's a way lot better now but back in days indian women were restricted & shamed for doing most random everyday thing.
As for rose bride thing, if you read any hindu mythology like ramayan or mahabharat you will know people fighting in duels to win the king's daughter as bride was treated like tradition, it's known as swayamwar & was used as to find a potential partner that is worthy of deserving the princess.
Now for slavery & saviour thing, under british colonialised india, indian women were sold as slave & they were treated like servants or sex objects. Utena did played a saviour role for anthy, she even mentioned it herself that wanting to protect anthy was her ego until way later in the series when she finally got attached to her. This ain't hate towards utena as character I literally adore her more than anyone in show because rgu entire theme is to explore gender roles & princess & prince stereotypes. I hardly doubt a series that have meaning behind colours of roses to cars will just put an indian character just for aesthetic purpose.

All the gintaladies are great, but for that extra dash of naughtiness, it’s hard to beat the demon Gedomaru. Be warned if you are thinking of summoning her. She has no respect for a weak master and will quickly turn on you.
idk who she is but she’s gay
