I found this quote from Diana Wynne Jones (Author of novels Howl's Moving Castle and Castle in the Air) on her time at Oxford when she had C.S. Lewis and Tolkien as professors and I thought I couldn't relate to Jrrt any more than I already did but I've been proven wrong.

"[C. S. Lewis] was just a marvelous lecturer: he made the dullest topics absolutely shine. He lectured in the very largest of lecture halls, which was a huge “L” shape, and it was packed, with people standing in the aisles, even early in the morning. Everybody drank it in. Obviously a whole lot of people took this away and thought about it, and began writing - mostly for children because in those days you couldn’t write fantasy for anyone else.     Tolkien was a different matter. He was just a kind of eminence grise and a legend. You couldn’t hear him lecture. He worked at not letting you hear, because he wanted to go away and finish writing The Lord of the Rings. So he had the very smallest lecture room. First of all it was packed out, so he spoke with his back to the audience and mumbling. Unfortunately he was talking about - meditating on, really - what a plot is like and how it mutates into other plots, and this I found so fascinating that I went back the next week as did one other person. And this meant that he couldn’t stop lecturing and still get the money, which apparently in those days you could if no one turned up - it was a dreadful racket, really. He could have given just the one lecture and then been paid for a term if we’d all stayed away. But this other person and I attended diligently week after week, so he was forced to go on meditating about plots mutating, and what I could hear was fascinating, because he was busy with the really large orchestration of the latter part of The Lord of the Rings at the time. But all I retain is a sense of how marvelous the way plots work is. That was all I got out of it, but I kept going in case I might understand a bit more next week - let alone hear a bit more."

I remember referring to this interview a long time ago, before the Howl renaissance, citing it while saying something like “don’t beat yourself up too much by comparing the development of your writing skills to Tolkien, because among OTHER writing aids he had (nannies, servants, a fulltime housewife, a private cook) he VERY MUCH slacked off his (prestigious, privileged, came with a private office/free lunch/servants, well paid, consisted of being left respectfully alone to be a genius) day job to write his fiction.” And someone sent me a bunch of very upset messages about how none of that was true, and when I was like, here are his letters about his servants and nannies, here is what Dianne Actual Wynne Jones wrote when she was his actual student, here is the labor context of Oxford; they said “who cares about how an obscure nobody had failed her classes.”

It was only a dumb exchange but it stuck with me, DWJ the obscure nobody. As a kid I remembered when Harry Potter came out and everyone was like “well, bookish child, don’t you love it?” And I would reply that for British boarding school fantasies about witches you couldn’t do better than Witch Week, and would receive the same reaction. “Who do you mean and why are you bothering?”

So thank you for all being so interested in the obscure nobody. I perennially love the image of her making Tolkien do his damn day job

I know there's already A Lot going into this pride angels campaign, so this feels like a long shot, but is there any chance of a pin banner being available? it'd be cool to have an on-theme way to display the pins when they aren't being worn

That would be cool! I have it on my to-do list to make pin banners but I'm not planning to offer them during the campaign. I need to find a trustworthy manufacturer, and I already have a lot of products to keep track of with the campaign so I think it's best to leave it to a later time.

I'll add a Pride Angels banner to my idea list :)) I had also wanted to make some for the Astrological and Zodiac Putti, so if people have collections of those pins or others with those themes they can display them. And when I make my Angelic Hierarchy set, I'll make a pin banner for that too.

Beaniatures I made last year! The term is a combination of "Beanie" (my cat's name) and "miniature". This was my first venture into figurines. They are plastic casts, each uniquely hand painted. All of them have been adopted to loving homes now! I'm hoping to make more later this year.

Don't get me wrong, I love Destiny 2 raids but sometimes it's like, Okay PEECHAN1000 we'll do the complex stuff, here's what we need you to do: first you have to kill the 17 elite wizards in this room without getting hit by the global shockwave that goes off every 5 seconds (it will instakill you and everyone will have to restart the entire encounter) then you'll get two buffs, one will last for 30 seconds, the other for 20 seconds. When the first buff runs out, but before the second buff runs out, you'll have a ten second window to pick up one of three glowing orbs hidden around the room (to find out which one you need, determine which day of the week and the exact minute on the hour it is and follow the flow chart we posted in discord) then run to a square that is not the boss's least favorite color and do three counter clockwise circles and shoot the smallest of 50 knights exactly ten times. If you did it correctly you will hear a tiger's growl, if you did it incorrectly you will hear a lion's growl. If you don't do this in time, we wipe. Do all of that three more times, this will open the passage to where we'll deal damage to the boss, but don't go though it yet! Next you'll have 30 seconds to run seven laps around this spire of floating platforms while jumping through rings, each lap you will pass a large projection of one of the presidents of the united states, decide which president this is and make a mental note of each president's full name and consecutive years in office and birthday. Then you'll have 20 seconds to call out to us the name of every president you did not see while running laps. It will be more helpful to the rest of us if you could list them in reverse alphabetical order. This will give you a buff which will last for 10 seconds and will allow you to deal damage to the boss. Now let's go over damage phase. Remember the years those seven president's were in office and their birthdays?

I was there yesterday! The best part was them letting kids write questions for the pencil, which were then communicated to it through an Ed, Edd n Eddy-ass tin can and string telephone.

One kid asked why the pencil was "in a cage," and the pencil replied, "so that I don't get scared and attack the crowd."

On the one hand, deciding to do a herringbone pattern probably increased the floor renovation project time by 4-5 hours. On the other hand, my library floor is going to look bomb as hell (just as soon as I run to Home Depot for more flooring because I ran out 😬). We’ll do black grout in here as well. And once the floor is done…I can start building bookshelves 🎉🎉🎉

Ok, it’s been a hot minute but we are finally making progress again on the library! We have moved the door a foot so we can have wall to wall shelves, and the bookcases are all built! I just have to sand and seal them and hopefully we can install them this weekend.

Books are all unpacked and starry night projector installed. Now we wait for the new light fixture, shelf lighting, and rug to arrive. ❤️

Light fixture installed, rug laid, throw pillows thrown. Bookcase lighting should arrive this weekend and I’m debating adding gold stars to the ceiling. But we’re nearly done!

I really am in love. I still need to make the rolling ladder and figure out what to do with the TV wall (the wall the couch is facing). But I have to focus on more pressing projects for a bit, so expect a final update in a few months, maybe! ❤️
