This is my story of the scorching. Two dragon’s stories. One lost egg. One queen. One kingdom. One flame, one city. Watch it burn.
“Aqua?” He murmured sleepily. “Hmp? What, Avalanche?” She grumbled back, slowly sitting up. “The egg is still safe, right?” Avalanche asked. Aqua nodded. He grinned. She couldn’t help it. She smiled back. The moon was starting to set, and the sun was starting to rise.
“I’ll go hunting,” Avalanche said. Aqua nodded. Avalanche looked around at the lake surrounding the island they were on. Much safer from scavengers here. Avalanche lifted off, scanning the sky for prey. Aqua glanced at the eggs, then dove into the water.
When she emerged, she found Avalanche flying back with a deer hanging from his mouth. She got up onto the sandy beach and shook herself and laid down. Avalanche landed, and gently set down the deer. They both ate. But then Aqua heard something… flapping?
She turned to see many dragons, and at the lead… was a large, strong dragon. She was majestic. And the way she tilted her wings… the way she held her head… Aqua immediately shifted into a bow. How… Aqua had never even known what a bow was. She didn’t know what respect was. And, of course, she didn’t know what a queen was. Avalanche started to bow his head, but he stopped himself. He held his body stiff, eyeing the strange dragon and her… nobody knew this word either, but soon to be known as “army”, suspiciously.
The dragon queen smiled. This was exactly what she needed. Instinct, respect, and strength. She looked at the male dragon. This dragon right here… he would be a perfect king. But, he seemed to be taken. He looked ready to defend his eggs and mate at all costs. But, if not king, he could be a general.
“Hello,” said the queen, nodding at Aqua, as if telling her to get out of the bow. Aqua’s wings relaxed, and she sat down. Her eyes were full of bewilderment and surprise. “Who are you?” Avalanche demanded. “I’m…” The queen paused. No one had asked her. No one had dared. She smiled. She could lie, couldn’t she? She didn’t even have to tell him… did she?
“I am… a royal.” “Hmm…” Avalanche said, frowning. “And who are you?” “I’m Aqua, and this is Avalanche,” Aqua said hurriedly. The queen nodded thoughtfully. “I came by… and saw you. You seem to have eggs.” The queen frowned, and smoke started to curl around her horns. “Most of us here have lost their eggs or treasure to scavengers. They must be stopped,” the queen growled, flicking her tail at the dragons behind her. Cold anger started to bubble up inside her again. Her one egg. Her one, perfect egg. Gone.
“Well…” Aqua started, then Avalanche cut in. “We haven’t lost our eggs. The scavengers haven’t stolen from us. Why should we help you? Why should we leave the safety of our home?” The royal dragon frowned. “Very well. I suppose you have a point. I will come back. I will come in two nights. You hear? Think about my offer…” Then the dragon whirled around, and flew off. The army behind her fell back, letting her lead.
The next day went by normally. And then the morning of the second day. “Can I come with you to hunt?” Aqua asked. “Sure,” Avalanche shrugged, a simple lift and fall of his wings.
But while they were away… three creatures came. While they were away… their eggs were stolen. The scavengers grabbed the eggs and ran, across the beach, and to the boat. They rowed, before the dragons returned.
There was a roar of fury that echoed across the mountain tops. That was Avalanche. Aqua, however, was the quiet ball of sadness, curled up with tears streaming down her face. Then she screamed. It was long and loud, like she was crying out her whole life. Avalanche had smoke billowing out of his snout, making his eyes water.
Later that night, the queen came. “Fine. We’ll help you. We’ll follow you.” Avalanche said, his face still a mask of fury. Aqua nodded. Her face was still wet. Her eyes were red.
They would now do anything for this dragon. Anything. Anything. So when she said they were ready… when she said to burn it all down… they did. Well, Aqua couldn’t but she found stuff to make it burn faster. More. Avalanche was by her side, burning it all down.
That’s my story of the scorching. I was careful not to have the queen have a name, since a WoF book said her name was lost in history. What did you think?
