“Decades of hatred will have piled up inside of them. I can’t even begin to imagine" , Astarion says about the spawns in the cells.
And what I find interesting about it, is that this line perfectly encapsulates all his denial in this very moment.
He says it as if he wasn’t like them, as if he didn’t have decades of hatred inside of him. He can’t even begin to imagine how it feels? But, in truth, we know, by this point, that not only he can imagine, but that he feels exactly the same!
As I already explained here, he distances himself from the other spawns; as he did several times before.
He pretends they are not like him. He doesn't want to remember that he used to be just like them, and not so long ago: like his siblings, he wants to see them as if they were nothing, and he can't be as "pathetic" as them... right?"
It’s too hard for him to look at his past and to accept that he wasn’t so different from them. And it’s understandable.
There's another layer of shame here, and it's guilt. Because he was the tool who brought them here, whether he wanted it or not, he's involved in their damnation.
Wouldn't it be easier to make them disappear and pretend they never existed? So that he never has to look at his own shame again, shame of being like them, shame of being the one who doomed them.
Besides, Astarion also widens the gap between himself and the other spawns because he’s lured by the temptation of the ritual, and he knows they’ll be sacrificed if he ascends; so he’s desperate to find any excuse to justify their sacrifices, desperate to numb his guilt by pretending they are hopeless. As if saying: "We can't do anything for them, better make use of them through their destruction".
It’s easier to pretend they’re below him – nothing like him. To pretend there is nothing to expect from them, while he should be at the top. He needs to believe they have nothing in common to make their sacrifice easier to deal with.
But he’s a victim too. He used to be one of the “wretch’s servants” too for decades, and hatred fuels him too, just like it fuels them. As feral, as dangerous, as yearning for revenge.
And it blinds him: his fears, his guilt, his deep need to feel safe. The so called safety of the Ascension blinds him so much it keeps him from relating to the other spawns.
And yet, I tend to believe that, by belittling the other spawns, Astarion belittles himself (unconsciously or not); that’s why he thinks, in this very moment, that only the ritual can make him worthy, put him above them and rid him of his shame: let’s make them disappear so I don’t have to see them again, so I never have to witness my shame, so I never have to see those people who remind me of my own misery, of the slave I used to be.
He used to be one of those “scraps of misery”. But it’s too painful to acknowledge now, now that he’s finally free.
But he will acknowledge all this later on.
The words he says if he doesn’t ascend but if you kill the others spawns are relevant:
If you call the spawns "monsters", he makes it clear you could have said the same about him, and by doing that, he breaks down the wall he built between him and the other spawns: They are alike, there's no great difference between them.
He was just like them, their traumas and violence grow in the same gruesome cradle, and yet, he is not a "monster". Once free, he learned another way, made the best decisions for himself and others, and if he could do it, they could have done the same.
At this point, he makes it clear that all the things he said back in the cells were driven by fear and guilt, a token of his denial as he refused to be compared to them; he could perfectly imagine how it feels to be like them, he just refused to do it because it would have made him too vulnerable in this crucial moment.
saying “i hope you die” is basic. saying “i hope hbo turns your favourite game into a live action series where the original developers aren’t even involved” is real. it could happen to you. it happened to me.
Astarion during Ascension rite, his own sanguinary cruel triumph. Art-page for zine I mentioned earlier.
Istvan lore and villager POVs about him after he dies and if you return to Trosky
(Istvan's sword is HENRY'S sword.)
(Why would the priest think Istvan killed himself? Did Istvan tell him something at confessional?)
(Why do gravedigger Ignatius and a PRIEST hate Istvan so much they deny him a Christian burial and service? Is Erik the "they" who made them give Istvan a funeral, and who buried him?)
Somehow in a thousand hours I have not encountered this... Saving for research purposes
If anyone ever feels bad about something in a fic not being “historically accurate”, just know that the timeline is Fucked.
The battle of Suchdol took place in December but Wenceslas was freed in Novemeber by JOHN of fucking LICHTENSTEIN. Wenceslas stopped off in Kuttenberg and was in Prague by Christmas.
Henry of Leipa, Hans’s first legal guardian after his father died? Yeah, he didn’t die till 1405!
Markvart Von Aulitz died in 1402! In a battle at Suchdol that took place before Kuttenberg fell! Poor Peter Pisek kept getting attacked
They straight up didn’t include Rupert who was kinda King of the Romans for a bit? Sorta? Depending on who you asked?
All this to say, do whatever you choose with the timeline and never feel bad about it. It’s our sandbox anyways
Erik duel ....Erik duel...."he meant the world to me"....calling out Henry's hypocrisy (him and Markvart being the only people to do so in the whole game, and both of them being totally optional revenge missions), his absolutely unhinged laughing. Hitting the pose from the cover of the first game. The fact that he deserted the Praguers and we don't see him again during the siege. The fact that he let Kubyenka go. They had one of Devil's men CAPTURED and Erik let him go, because revenge mattered more than praise from Markvart or von Bergow. It mattered more than a career or a future. The fact that all of that can happen without Henry even showing up. Man had a grief induced breakdown and ditched his job and life prospects. Where the hell do you even go after that? He's a bug in a jar to me I'm so fascinated by this fool
If you see this you’re legally obligated to reblog and tag with the book you’re currently reading
(Maybe) every pet name that Hans calls Henry during KCD2
exhausting dialogue options is exhausting
Saving this for research purposes
When I was a boy my Pa, Martin, brought me here. He told me back then he spent the best years of his life here.
felt the urge to do a run where all the companions look like they fell out when i shook a box set of 80s sword and sorcery movies

Perfect Slaughter News!
Just posted about it on ao3 (with Astarion's POV of ch9-10), but I wanted to officially announce it here as well:
🎉Perfect Slaughter is fully edited and ready for formatting/printing! 🎉
A few notes:
I want to apologize for how long it took for me to get to this, gahh!!! I had no idea it would take a whole year--I blame my original story, Circle of Sixths, for absolutely capitalizing every thought in my brain of late. Angsty vampire + sunshine prostitute go brrrr
There were a couple continuity problems to fix, though less than I feared honestly--the only major one was Tyrus forgetting they'd already planned to poison Dufay and suggesting it again in a later chapter 😂 very in character of him tho tbh
There were a couple minor additions! The only notable addition I can think of right now was a couple extra lines/paragraphs to chapter 30 to support Tyrus convincing Cazador to not kill Astarion. I remember I didn't edit that one as extensively before posting--wasn't fun reading it over and over again probably, lol--but you may also spot one or two other new sentences here and there throughout the fic.
I plan to start formatting this story for both epub and print next month, and will try my hand at bookbinding woooo! Then I'll be sharing the files with my patreon supporters, but I encourage any/all who are interested to create their own as well 🩵
An extra shout-out to @quillsnspirits for pointing out continuity errors and every single goddamn uncurly apostrophe in my author discord typo channel, you're a real one🙏
If anyone ever physically binds this story and wants to show off, please tag me!!!
Only semi-related, but working on extensive edits for this fic over the past few weeks has resurrected an old AU brainworm of mine 😅 aka, what if Tyrus did take up Cazador's offer in ch34/35 to save Astarion from the Ascension rite, Dufay is sacrificed instead....and we are in the head of Victoria who grows up half-raised by dysfunctional!Tystar, half-groomed by Cazador for a terrible purpose--only to fall for a certain spawn still living up in the attic, and gay love still saves the day...(is this idea too unhinged?? Lol probably)? Anyways, this may or may not ever happen, I'm just in a sapphic mood rn I think 😂
Update!! I've now got the epub and print versions mostly formatted 🥳 I ended up using a free tool I really like, check out reedsy.com if you want to try it yourself!
Next step is to reach out to previous PS fanart creators for permission to include some pieces at the end of chapters and/or the back of the printed version! Or maybe, if it's too huge, a separate art book?? (This is why I said mostly above lol)
Once I hear back from people and embed the images, the epub and print formatting will get finalized...and then the REAL work begins in August as I figure out how to physically bind a book for the first time 😅😤
idk i think what is interesting about astarion to me is the fact that you have a guy who started out an asshole (normal type) and then spent two hundred years in a very carefully and specifically crafted (by the writers of the game) Become A Terrible Person Or Die nexus. like it wasn’t just a Torment Nexus, he wasn’t just in hell, i feel like this is very important not to forget, he was in hell but it was specifically a hell designed to, over time, kill the empathy of anyone trapped in it, kill their brain’s ability to prioritize other peoples’ survival, to numb one’s conscience.
and then he gets yanked directly out of that nexus and despite that the fact that he spent, again, two hundred years in a situation that was sort of a rock tumbler for the human soul, there’s still a pebble left in there. and it’s a pebble that can be grown if placed in the right environment and provided with a support network.
so i think it becomes interesting because it really does i think force you to start thinking about the limits of free will even on as basic a level as the human personality. i think the fact that he becomes such a different character based on player choice, that his end morality is so hugely dependent on player choice, is uhhh. a big part of what the devs were going for probably.
it makes a lot of people really uncomfortable to acknowledge some bad people would be good people if literally nothing changed except they had a good support network and different circumstances. especially because it means the opposite is also true. which is even more uncomfortable.
you know that part in the beginning of fellowship of the ring where gandalf is talking about how gollum is ultimately only like that because of the ring and gandalf thinks his story is sad? astarion is kinda like if they sexualized gollum.

During my first playthrough of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, I stumbled upon a small pond, surrounded by several little carved wooden birds. At the time, I had no idea what they meant. Later in the same playthrough, I found one of those birds under Hans Capon’s bed at the Devil’s Den. That’s when I started to make the connection — and I thought it was really cute.
But it was during my second playthrough, after finishing the game once, that things really started to click. I began finding those wooden birds in more places. One in particular stood out: an isolated laundry spot, high up on a hill — the perfect little voyeur perch to watch the women washing clothes down below. And sure enough, when you get there, Henry comments something like, “Hans would like this spot.” And there it was again: another wooden bird.
That pretty much confirmed it for me — these birds might be marking the places Hans Capon has passed through. As if he’s been ahead of us the whole time, just out of reach.
And then the cherry on top: at the inn in Želhejov, not far from that same laundry spot, the innkeeper casually mentions that he’s seen Hans recently. So yep — he really was there, probably doing exactly what we’re all thinking... 👀🤣
Now I want to find them all. To see if there are more scattered around, and especially if there are any among Hans’s belongings at his poacher camp.
I think it’s absolutely adorable that the devs added such a subtle detail. A quiet, clever way to keep Hans present throughout the game, even during the long stretch where he’s not physically with us.
so about that Luke and Neil photo... 🫠
Oh no, my two sassy blond obsessions
Two very opposing moments that both captivated me for different reasons in ladyredems story "In Vino Veritas". |110625
IMO Astarion is actually extremely emotionally intelligent, despite everything he's been through that should have broken that down and has to some extent.
But like... Even after 200 years of "pure shit" he's able to recognize what he's doing to the player and why, and once he cares for them he feels guilty enough to explain it to them. If you give your body to Haarlep he's the only character who recognizes how violating it is to have your body used without your consent, even if the player thinks they'll enjoy it at first. If you don't ascend him, and then set all the spawn free, he says they don't deserve to suffer just because he lured them into Cazador's clutches and recognizes that they deserve the chance he got as well.
He always respects others taking their freedom for themselves, which is a great display of empathy really. When Lae'zel or Shadowheart fight against their own oppressive masters he recognizes how difficult that is and he's proud of them.
I don't think it's just what he's learned from seducing victims for Cazador either, personally. Whatever he learned from doing that is more the kind of stuff we see from him in Act 1, the flattery and physical intimacy used to get the player on his side.
I don't think deep introspection would have been particularly helpful in his situation. Realizing how broken down he's becoming would only make it worse, it's better to delude himself that he's fine or that he deserves what's happening to him- but he doesn't. He never believes he deserves Cazador's treatment, he stays angry, angrier than any of the other companions about how they were abused. Even angrier than his siblings, which is probably why Cazador treats him especially poorly.
I think that's because he is aware the whole time that he doesn't deserve it, and it's happening anyway. That's why he's so bitter about power and heroes.
"Heroes didn't save me, Mindflayers did."
Because like... Yeah. He's right to some extent. A typical dnd hero probably would have "saved him" by killing him.
I don't think he ever truly lacks empathy or a moral compass, even in the beginning. I think it's more like he sees right and wrong perfectly clearly, and has decided from his observation of the world around him that it doesn't matter.
Power supercedes morality and justice in the end and I think that must have been hard for him. Which is why he's angry when the player tries to make him see it doesn't have to be that way.
Basically ...I've been writing a lot in Astarion's POV lately and the more I try to get in his head the less I think he was a corrupt magistrate when he was alive. I'm beginning to think he actually cared a lot about justice, and that's why he became one in the first place. My headcanon now is that instead of some unfair ruling leading to his death, it was a ruling against the powerful, and that's what got him killed.
Power over justice.
