an early round-up of Darkest Hour reviews for Ben from Telluride and TIFF:

Darkest Hour might be Gary Oldman’s finest…hour. But Ben Mendelsohn deserves a look. Low-key brilliant. [x]

... while Ben Mendelsohn outdoes Colin Firth as the stuttering King George VI, whose difficulties with words allowed him to recognize the power that Churchill could wield with them. [x]

It doesn’t help matters that King George VI, played eloquently by the great Ben Mendelsohn (“Animal Kingdom”)… [x]

… although it should be said that Mendelson’s portrayal of George VI improves upon Colin Firth’s in some ways… [x]

And then there’s Ben Mendelsohn, who delivers a restrained and nuanced turn as King George VI. It’s almost refreshing to see Mendelsohn playing a character so “normal,” but it’s further proof that his talent is more versatile than “oddly charming slimeball.” [x]

The great Ben Mendelsohn as King George does not so much give us a stuttering King as one who already has already conquered his affliction. [x]

The supporting cast is solid all around especially Ben Mendelsohn as the king. Mendelsohn’s performance is both comedic as well as dramatic. His character is pivotal to the story and becomes the voice of reason in the film’s final act. [x]
