Bay really got done dirty for most of Switched At Birth. By so many. One boyfriend enlists in the army without telling her, one cheats on her. Her bio mom makes so little an effort to actually BE her mom, unlike Daphne, whoâs bio parents do nothing BUT try to be there for her and make up for all the time they lostânot to mention that Bayâs bio mom KNEW about her, and made the decision not to try to get her back, or even have any sort of contact with her. Her grandmother turns on her once she finds out about the switch, gives the cameo sheâd always intended to give to Bay to Daphne, because âsheâs bloodâ and makes so many racist and bigoted comments about Bay because sheâs part Puerto Rican, and Grandma âcanât help seeing her differently.â Her parents always assume the worst in her, and never give her the benefit of the doubt, even going so far as to blame her for things that happen that are absolutely not her fault. She takes the fall for Daphne so she can go to medical school, and this ends up ruining all of her life plans, and ends up with a criminal record for something she didnât even do.Â
Not to mention she gets r*ped by her ex, and gets called a liar and whore and all sorts of other horrible things, he tries to pressure her into telling the school board that he didnât in fact r*pe her (even though he did) and then has this whole sob story of âI got kicked out of school and canât get a good job because you wouldnât take it back,â and tries to make her feel guilty about his circumstancesâand then her CLOSE FRIEND ends up in a relationship with him, and Bay is just supposed to be okay with it because her friend is going through a hard time (sorry, itâs still not okay to date the person who sexually assaulted your friend, no matter whatâs going on in her life; but then again, MB basically said it was Bayâs fault for getting so drunk anyway, so are we really surprised?).Â
She just gets constantly dumped on throughout the show, and made out to be this horrible person, or a whiny, spoiled brat, when reallyâŠBay is the one that never fit in, was always searching, and when she finally got answers, was essentially told âToo bad, get over it, move on,â and wasnât really allowed any time to grieve the life she should have had or process what happened to her. Sheâs just supposed to smile and deal with it, and sheâs constantly compared to Daphne and basically told how much she falls short several times. And itâs all just really unfair, and I really feel for her.
