CURRENTLY ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS FOR NEW ZINE: The Asian Cyborg And Other Othered Bodies

I’m so excited to announce that we are currently taking submissions for our new zine: “The Asian Cyborg and Other Othered Bodies”! This zine will explore the themes of technology, sci-fi, race, and queerness. Who are the othered bodies in SF? What does it mean to be “othered” as in to be queer? What are the queer futures of the past? What are the queer futures being imagined for us now? And is queerness inherently tied to the bodily experience?

We are accepting art and literary submissions from all around the world, but any text submissions not in English must be accompanied by an English translation. Any kind of submission is eligible: illustrations, paintings, comics, photography, poetry, prose, essays, even memes. Deadline for submissions is 08/31 at 11:59 PM EST. Google form link in bio.

All contributors will receive a free copy of the zine (either digital or physical) when completed as well as a small honorarium ($ compensation for their submission). Note that submitting an application is not guaranteed entry into the zine. We will notify you if your piece was selected via email.

Kikimora is a delightful little shit, I love em! People theorize that she’s Bellos’ version of Hooty, but it’s be great if she was more of a King parallel. Just a funny little demon that he keeps around just because.

Emperor Bellos is his own Hooty. Think about it- ties to one location, and seems to be built into the walls.

           Combining BOTH of these separate asks because they fit and connect so well into one another;

           …You know. This… could ACTUALLY make more sense!

           They’re both small, little gremlin people with sassiness, but otherwise we don’t see any power from them as of the moment? Of course Kikimora hasn’t had the need to flex any power –if she HAS any- but alas… And being quippy with Lilith? Just as King and Eda can sometimes be???

           I have to wonder if Hooty isn’t so much the lobotomized remains of the Owl Deity, but like… a living fixture that Eda created and attached to the Owl House, with Hooty becoming one with it in a symbiotic relationship! Just like Belos, attached to the heart, and thus the Boiling Isles; Able to see what happens in the castle because he’s basically connected himself to it?! The parallels of Hooty having been made to be a defender and not being a parasite, whereas Belos has grafted himself onto the Titan and is using its power, and/or trying to resurrect it with himself as a medium!

           Of course, this would leave the parallels at;

           Luz-Amity

           Eda-Lilith

           King-Kikimora

           Hooty-Belos

           Owlbert-Lilith’s Palisman

           The Owl House-Emperor Belos’ Castle

           And I know it’s weird to put Hooty and Belos as narrative parallels. But on the other hand, Hooty is horrifying and has definitely committed war crimes, so it kind of makes sense? And if Hooty and Belos DO have parallels…. Then Hooty being attached to a larger fixture, only to become in control of it when it comes to life?

           …What if Belos will do the same with the Titan? If Hooty is a lobotomized deity, could this parallel Belos clearly being past his expiration date? Maybe having lost/lacked a bile sac of his own???

           Also, given King and Hooty sometimes getting along, more than Hooty gets along with the other protagonists… It WOULD be interesting to have it paralleled by Kikimora being Belos’ most trusted servant, even if that might not be saying much. And assuming the Owl-Masked person is an actual character and not just a cloak and mask on a rack, how would they factor into all of this?!?
