rambling below if you really want to know some of my online opinions (nothing crazy. i think it's all just normal people opinions with normal people nuance)

Y'know what. It's Tumblr. I'll ramble in here for a second:

I don't know what's going on with Pro/Anti-ship discourse. I think people will always create what they will, I also think people are free to react accordingly. Harassment will always be pointless at best and harmful at worse--no matter your opinion, I am sure you agree it is unwarranted. I personally care less about one's stance on the topic than I do their actual actions. In a general sense I will always be opposed to complete no-nuance censorship of art (like on a wide-scale level ie "it should be illegal to draw x", not talking about individual or site terms that disallow certain art--that's their prerogative and I respect it.) because whether you agree with it or not, drawing or writing about something is not the same as actually doing something in real life. As an aside, make sure to tag/lock/whatever any art appropriately! And I think it is always a good idea to get familiar with your block button--nothing wrong with blocking people with things you don't want to see, I think. I also don't think I need to say this, but reporting fictional art to actual tiplines/hotlines/etc is an incredibly dimwitted decision that does more harm than good. No matter what you think about the art, all that does is divert time and energy from dealing with actual harm being done. (that part is more of a rant. not that i think the average person does this but i've seen one too many posts about it)

Previous rant that has a different tone completely but I will still include: I think telling people not to color-pick from art/designs is kind of dumb (but whatevs, sure), telling people not to copy/reference at all is . . . eh . . . and telling people not to get inspired is very foolish. [Insert "it came free with your xbox" meme but it says "everyone GETS INSPIRED dipshit / it came free with your BEING HUMAN". I'll edit that together and plunk it on my toyhou.se page one day cause oughhhhhh thanks for using your fucking content warning page to tell me not to get inspired you snivelling fucks.] ^ sorry warning page misuse makes me a little heated sometimes. especially when they don't even bother to make the text readable (STOP MAKING IT RED TEXT ON RED BACKGROUNDS PLEASE!!!!)

If we wanted to engage in nuance (lol, lmao) on the "are audiobooks reading" debate, we really do need to bring literacy, and especially blind literacy, into the conversation.

Because, yes, listening to a story and reading a story use mostly the same parts of the brain. Yes, listening to the audiobook counts as "having read" a book. Yes, oral storytelling has a long, glorious tradition and many cultures maintained their histories through oral history or oral + art history, having never developed a true written language, and their oral stories and histories are just as valid and rich as written literature.

We still can't call listening in the absence of reading "literacy."

The term literacy needs to stay restricted to the written word, to the ability to access and engage with written texts, because we need to be able to talk about illiteracy. We need to be able to identify when a society is failing to teach children to read, and if we start saying that listening to stories is literacy, we lose the ability to describe those systemic failures.

Blind folks have been knee-deep in this debate for a long time. Schools struggle to provide resources to teach students Braille and enforcing the teaching of Braille to low-vision and blind children is a constant uphill battle. A school tried to argue that one girl didn't need to learn Braille because she could read 96-point font. Go check what that is. The new prevalence of audiobooks and TTS is a huge threat to Braille literacy because it provides institutions with another excuse to not provide Braille education or Braille texts.

That matters. Braille-literate blind and low-vision people have a 90% employment rate. For those who don't know Braille, it's 30%. Braille literacy is linked to higher academic success in all fields.

Moving outside the world of Braille, literacy of any kind matters. Being able to read text has a massive impact on a person's ability to access information, education, and employment. Being able to talk about the inability to read text matters, because that's how we're able to hold systems accountable.

So, yes, audiobooks should count as reading. But, no, they should not count as literacy.
