Hi! I hope this is not a weird question but do you happen to know what exactly is CWN's haitang flower? Looking on Google, I found its actually crabapple flower but there's a lot of variety of them so I was wondering if that doesn't matter and all of them are "haitang" or is just for one type (tho I found out that it says some are from Japan, other from China and then, idk, i found an European variety and so)? What color is, more pink-ish or red-ish?
Anyways, I hope I'm not bothering but I'd like to know which one represents cwn more in specific (and if that's a thing anyway, 😅)
Hi! Historically haitang has always been popular in China so people cultivated a lot of varieties, I'm not sure which variety Meatbun had in mind but I think it's probably the red haitang. I'll explain later.
I feel like haitang is more a symbol of Chu Wanning's love for Mo Ran than a representation of CWN as a person. Haitang could symbolise many things in Chinese culture, but when it comes to romantic relationships, haitang is a symbol of 苦恋 - which means "bitter love," "unrequited love," or "tragic love." Haitang is sometimes called 断肠花, which means "heartbreak flower" (断肠, the phrase for "heartbreak," literally means "broken intestines" - I know it doesn't sound poetic at all in English but it is in Chinese...and 断肠 is used to describe the most profound sorrow). And the type of haitang most often associated with tragic love is the red haitang, also known as "heartbreak red" (断肠红).
One of the most distinctive features of the haitang flower is that it has no scent (I know CWN smells nice but that's probably the fragrance of the haitang wood, not the flower). And one interpretation of this fact is that haitang doesn't want to expose its own admiration for another so it hid away its fragrance. So in this sense it is the perfect flower for CWN.
