there is no "worst" era of doctor who. they're all terrible in their own special ways
people rightfully meme on Paul Jerricho's delivery of "no not the mind probe" but frankly I think it's been overshadowing the rest of the hilariously baffling choices he makes in the rest of The Five Doctors
for example, what the fuck is this?
Always embarrassing realizing you don't know basic facts about your friends. Like yeah hey, here's this person I love dearly, I've known them for 23 years, we've been through so much together. They're currently working in a lab.... developing... medicine? and also getting a PhD. I think. Don't ask me what subject.
So these scenarios are what I honestly think will most likely happen with Doctor Who after the 2026 Christmas specials.
Sporadic specials or just a Christmas special every year.
Short seasons of 3 or 4 episodes.
Another extended hiatus.
Seasons of 6-8 episodes and a Christmas special, but with massive gaps of 2-3 years between seasons.
Anyone seriously expecting a return to seasons of 10 or 13 episodes is just setting themselves up for disappointment. I don't think that will ever happen again even if the BBC found a new production partner.
I’m convinced that the Seventh Doctor is one of the most powerful characters in all of fiction. Not “The Doctor” but the “Seventh Doctor” very specifically.
He’s incredibly funny conceptually and I cannot get over it. I’m baffled by his existence. He is walking proof that The Doctor doesn’t need to be always just some guy in a box. He has 4 main enemies and none of them are iconic Doctor Who villains. His greatest foes are his own intellect, the literal embodiment of evil, an abstract bounty hunter that has reality warping powers and Thatcherism. Does he fear a God? One of his schemes against a great enemy involves weaponising RPF fanfiction and I’m being completely serious. Every Doctor references 4’s speech in Genesis Of The Daleks while pretending this little man doesn’t exist. I guarantee that if he was in Midnight, the episode ends in 10 minutes. He has either tricked the entity into combustion or has instructed Ace and Hex to batter it to death with baseball bats. The episode runs at full length only if he gets bored but instead ends with a full doxxing of its identity.
I’m not a powerscaler, but if I were, this man would not be on the fucking scale. Do you really think that most anime characters would clock him as the main threat? He’s playing the fucking spoons and tottering around, he has misdirected everyone so hard that people are just forgetting that he still hasn’t explained (I’m only at Death In The Family) why the fuck the TARDIS is in a different colour. Even if let’s say, he’s bisected by Sukuna or obliterated by Saitama, he will come back. Somehow, SOMEHOW, be it one hour or literal decades, he would have resurrected and would giggle and completely wipe your existence from History. Warping reality cannot save you, he has already won. Keep in mind that the only reason that he actually died and regenerated was because he got super unlucky, that even after getting pelted by bullets BY ACCIDENT that what took him out was a fucking defribrillator BY ACCIDENT and also somewhat BY MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE. Nobody is doing is doing it like him. As I type this, I literally cannot think of a way that my favourite characters could actually kill him permanently. Like what do you do if you see him? Why does he just…know things other Doctors don’t? What even is he?
It really is such a shame that they biffed Belinda’s story so hard, because the whole unwilling or accidental companion angle is such an underexplored concept in NuWho. Like, it’s one of those ideas that classic Who played with all the time—people who didn’t want to be there, who got swept up in the chaos by accident or circumstance—and it always added this fascinating tension to the dynamic. You’d get characters trying to balance survival with curiosity, or resentment with reluctant awe.
But with Belinda, they only really committed to that for maybe three episodes. And then they managed to fumble her arc so catastrophically and in such a wildly unpopular way that we’ll probably won't see another companion like her again for ages.
Which sucks, because that archetype has so much narrative potential. The friction between someone who doesn’t want to be part of the adventure and a Doctor who can’t stop chasing it? That’s storytelling gold. And instead, they tossed it aside.
Absolutely wild that it is completely true to say that an actor has appeared in both the very first and most recent episode of doctor who, a show which started more than six DECADES ago
60s doctor who had four different hot twunk companions in a row, and i just think that says something about the doctor's taste in men
dr who episodes should sometimes open with a random scene set in a random room in the tardis with the doctor and or companion just chillin and vibin and it's truly fucking insane that they never do, never! ever!! i'm not even asking for like something important, just have an episode open with idk doc is reorganizing furniture in the tardis lounge-library-pool and then companion gives him a phone call or some shit it's literally so easy, it would make the tardis ACTUALLY feel lived-in
Why can’t I be like you?
the national archives stores a whole bunch of their stuff offsite in a giant cave in the uk’s largest salt mine???????????? let me IN
what if we kissed. in the document storage salt mine
it's literally fascinating how often people attempt to make good television out of doctor who
Eleven's era really is PEAK Doctor Who.
They said but what if we make him face what he's done? Because he started out as an explorer but then evolved into so much more. And what if we make him face that and realize that truth.
And then came S5 - where Amy realizes that the doctor is not quite as light-hearted as he seems, and it ends with the Pandorica opening and all the Doctor's enemies coming together to trap him.
And then they asked what if we make him actually deal with the end of the Time War? We may deal with his own feelings on it, what if we make him deal with the rest of the universe's opinion? What if we deal with their fear of him now? What if he had to deal - ACTUALLY deal - with the mortality of his friends? And then they came up with S6 and Melody Pond and River Song and the Silence and the death of the Brigadier and the Doctor's death.
And then they said what if we have to deal with the Doctor learning how to be how he used to be again - just an idiot running around time and space trying to help people. Without any of the crazy morality or any of the "his word is law" that he's had. And then they wrote S7.
Just...
Peak Doctor Who.
Trial of a time lord is fucking awesome don't let anyone convince you otherwise. The doctor goes on trial and his prosecutor is the valeyard who accuses him of meddling and genocide while the doctor argues with him for fourteen episodes straight except the valeyard IS the doctor. So it's just the doctor wasting everyone's fucking time. As per usual
