JOKES I am NOT napping
Anyways, I think it’s interesting that the soul is a reflection of how the individual perceives themselves (re: the warden lol)
people who say that they are unsalvageable from the beginning may just not understand how much their childhood fucked them up -> even if they are “difficult” children, they just wanted affection.
Ashley is turned into a sociopath due to the incompetent parenting where the parent (mostly mom, since dad is just negligent and spineless) that delude themselves as if they’ve done enough but the children are just fucked up, so they are tired (yowza, way to show how their parents probably also fucked them over -> generational trauma probably lol, they need therapy)
The codependency is created bc the mom pushes the fucking burden of taking care of sister onto Andrew -> who btw at first, they are just “normal” siblings (in their relationship)
The fuck up is when they killed Nina -> Andrew sees himself as further unloveable and unsalvageable, still grime soul than tar bc he still has a narration where he isn’t exactly “evil”, bc he carries guilt -> he believes that no one would love him if they know the extent of what he did, another aspect is how he doesnt think Ashley loves him but that he is only a mean onto soothing her own insecurities. But there is also another “route” where he thinks Ashley is the only one that could love him (since he sees how he is inherently broken and Ashley is the only one that gets that)
Honestly, here are dumps of hypothesis I have lolololol
1.Route separated
- There could either be two “entities” (the entity vs something terrifyig) working against each other —> approaches different “section” —> Andrew and Ashley
- Something terrifying (ST) could be working together with the hospital + ToxiSoda -> the dude showed (the surgeon) at the bar that wanted to create a company with the sodaman -> likely factor 1 aspd (“psychopath”) where he doesn’t feel any remorse and is on a larger scope (organ harvesting, working together to trap and quarantine people like livestocks, then pay off the family member)
- Route hypothesis (RH) 1 : TE (the entity) could be wanting to recruit the surgeon but needs Ashley to bridge contract between them first
- RH 2 : TE wanted to go head to head with ST and tries to recruit Ashley, because she has a tar soul so can help killing surgeon and overthrowing ST main energy source. Andrew is seen as burden that just blocks the route, so he tries to manipulate Ashley and make them go against each other (divide and conquer) —> likely doesn’t have knowledge of Andrew relation to ST
- I’m not sure if in this route ST knows about TE, it could be that they just had relation since they are young because Andrew had potential to be a tar soul -> note that souls are said to be a reflection of how the individual perceives themselves, so Andrew already sees himself as twisted because he romantically + sexually interested in his sister and he denies this + runs from the thoughts but accepts it more in the cliff hanger route
(Misc note -> Ashley probably only recently has hatched into a tar soul, because the ST was interested with Andrew more -> likely implies that Andrew was perceiving himself as “there is something wrong” with him), while Ashley tends to have this “naivety” of how she is because she runs from her issues, her thoughts, her anxieties, so she deludes herself and sees her as not wrongful. Though this is changed eventually, bc she did hatch as a tar soul -> she sees herself as inherently something is wrong and that nobody loves her -> roots of insecurity that takes over all of her decisions, especially through age regression)
2. Route conjoined
- The two entities are working with each other, the entity is working under something terrifying under promises of energy / power probably lmao -> it could be that ST (something terrifying) is also just manipulating him and under false promises
- TE knows nothing of Andrew and ST’s prior engagement -> so only sees Andrew as a burden blocking their route -> could be that after Andrew is recruited, then they work with one another and then collaborates with TaxiSoda owner (the surgeon either is the owner / he works under the owner and is a tool to a “bigger cause”)
(which is funny bc in the vision room it is said that Andrew sees it as futile to kill of the surgeon, but tbh it could actually halt a lot of the progress -> yes, it could be that there are benefactors that would play a role also, but I think this game is 4-6 chapters? I don’t think they would expand to this aspect much, probably just a small touch)
(Misc notes : tbh I think this is the more unlikely route LMAO)
3. Possible endings
- They work together with entities -> killing spree together as lovers lol ^_^
- They kill one another bc seeds of distrust are planted ->
1. Ashley turning against Andrew, Andrew loves her still and tries to tell her to get a grip but she doesn’t believe him bc manipulated by TE and ends up killing him
2. Ashley still turning against him, but Andrew manages to make her trust him and they work against the entities (either work against TE and ST / Andrew takes a deal with ST and fucks TE over), still becoming murderer for ST (maybe on larger scale / working with that surgeon)
3. They turn against each other and both went on separate ways, blinded by their own thoughts to understand that they are manipulated by TE and ST / each on their own with differing agendas -> could be one ends up killing the other then the other grow cold and becomes tool for the devils / that the other kills themselves after (suicide due to guilt / no reason to live)
- They break free from the chains of manipulations and sees through that shit -> runs away to another city together / win against the demons and stay in city (or can move out)
1. Could be that they hate each other, and wants to kill one another / end up like previous endinds
2. They fall more into codependency, and their relation improves as they are more on equal grounds ahead
3. Andrew is more and more into Ashley and slowly becoming more possessive and Ashley slowly losing the power in the dynamic and Andrew is basically traps her instead
4. They get healthy and go to therapy LOL -> tbh or just overall realise how fucked up they are and want to improve (unlikely, bc I dont think this is the objective of the game lolz)
The Decay of Andy and Leyley: the bad, the ugly and the terrible
Now that it’s been a while since I finished the Decay route, I think I’m ready to finally analyse this chapter as a whole. I’ve collected my thoughts and read through a couple of people’s opinions here and there… just to be utterly disappointed. I knew casual fans generally didn’t understand much of the subtext for tcoaal, but damn are they completely lost with this one. Maybe it’s the fact that I only interact with a small echo chamber of the fandom that does get it, but after all the terrible takes I’ve had the displeasure of seeing, I think it’s time I leave my own. There is quite a lot to comment on, since this part of Decay builds upon several plot points of the story: the quarantine, the entity, lord unknown, and namely, the main duo’s upbringing and relationship. While I’d love to pick apart every nook and cranny of this episode, this analysis will only focus on Andrew and Ashley’s relationship, as that alone has plenty of things to dissect for one post. I will also comment on some of the changes done to the previous episodes and what that could mean for the next routes. (More below the cut, this will be a long one).

(tw for extensive discussions of dubiously consensual sexual situations, typical to canon. also spoilers for the decay route update)
honestly, one of the most interesting aspects of andrew's psyche that we get to see in the most recent decay route update to me is his nearly unending hesitancy about having sex with ashley, despite both his overwhelming desire to AND her incredibly blasé, Yeah Sure Let's Do It attitude in response to the question.
while the end of the burial route provides some key insight into ashley's point of view regarding this topic (e.g. if you go with the less enthusiastic/more teasing answer to andrew's question of "we're not like that, right? right??"), and the shots & such ending provides even more intrigue into her motivations, i think that decay presents two key reasons as to why andrew has continued to hold back for so long: his two core conflicting desires, and an inability to see ashley as her own full person. notably, both of these parts can easily be connected to his mother's childhood abuse and parentification of him as well.
with regards to the first point: andrew has two main overwhelming desires at the heart of his character that motivate most of his actions, which unfortunately for him are completely incompatible. andrew wants:
to be a normal, average person-- someone who can hold a steady, respectable job, fit in at the block party BBQs, and not attract any negative attention from the neighbors.
to fuck his sister.
to some degree, you could even read the distinction between the two main routes themselves (burial and decay) to be motivated by whether or not andrew can diffuse the tension between these two wants-- in burial, he gives up on his need to fit in with the rest of respectable society, presumably pushing him more towards the fucking-his-sister route; in decay, he struggles significantly to let go of this desire for normalcy, and the stress almost always breaks him. notably, in neither of these routes can he fully give up on the second desire-- really, his relationship with julia and the rest of his life up til the point that ep1 begins has been about him trying and failing to do so, so this makes sense.
(sidenote: i would also like to clarify that i think the Most key distinction between these two routes comes down to the decision you actually have to make to get one or the other-- namely, whether or not the siblings are able to trust one another. but anyways)
this focus on the first desire for normalcy is also interesting in that it seems to be one of the core desires that renee holds as well, as we see her so happily boast about during their interactions in ep2. honestly i could probably write a whole post about how much andrew (consciously or, more often, not) mimics his mother's behavior and takes on her standards and ideals, but the key point to pay attention to here is the fact that andrew has subsumed his mother's viewpoint in such a way that he is either not fully aware of or simply hasn't questioned in all that much depth yet.
we can also see this with the aforementioned parentifiication, which has really interesting consequences on how much andrew does (not) see ashley as her own autonomous person. pretty much every single childhood flashback we get in 3a shows the same terrible cycle:
andrew is told by renee that ashley is His responsibility -> ashley causes problems on purpose -> andrew takes the fall for her
frankly, we don't even really need that first step for andrew to fully internalize the idea that ashley's actions are His to take responsibility for. the horrible consequences of this are also quite obvious: not only is this pressure to take responsibility for someone else's actions an incredibly unfair burden to put on anyone, much less a kid, but it also continually pushes andrew to see ashley as something less than human, or as little more than an extension of himself rather than her own person.
the main conflict in decay really comes down to this conflicting desire between the two of them, where what both andrew and ashley want above all else is Complete and Utter control over the other-- andrew wanting control because he has again been groomed to see ashley as his full responsibility, and ashley wanting control to assuage her own insecurities and fears about being isolated and hated forever. the more sympathetic throughline underlying a lot of this is that what both of them seem to want is safety, to protect both themselves and each other from any and all situations outside of their control-- though, unfortunately, a lot of times those exact external situations are simply the other acting on this mirrored desire for control lol.
anyways, going back to the sex thing-- since andrew doesn't see ashley as her own person, since he sees her as incapable of taking responsibility for her own actions and therefore as someone who cannot make decisions for herself, due in large part to him automatically transferring this burden to himself, andrew also sees ashley's consent as essentially meaningless.
the more sympathetic reading here is that andrew does genuinely want ashley to be at least kinda into it as more than a manipulation tactic/transactional thing-- but i think it's also equally likely that andrew simply doesn't want to have to once again shoulder the full burden of Committing Incest on his own, and he doesn't trust ashley to ever be even capable of taking the fall for her own actions. the fact that andrew still ultimately sees ashley as Leyley and NEVER as Ashley Proper (as he himself recognizes at one point) really just reinforces this to me. he says it himself-- he practically raised this woman. and in this case, even above all others, ashley's actions are quite literally also his own. it all goes back to that initial mistrust, and he carries that resentment with him even after they get around to actually doing it. mutually dubious consent, truly in-fucking-deed.
