Mild Future Diary obsession :3 I've been a fan of the series for a decade, and now focus on translating and archiving any official media related to Future Diary, including the Visual Novel, Manga, Light Novels, Cast Commentaries and many others.
Translation for "Future Diary: the 13th Diary Owner"
"Future Diary: the 13th Diary Owner" is a visual novel based on the manga and anime of Future Diary, with two official versions: the original release and a re-release dubbed Re:Write.
The game was never officially translated to English; however, some of us within the community have been working on the fan-translation, and I've decided to post my own work here. The following is a link to a Google Drive folder with all of the translations I've personally worked on so far, in the form of pdf scripts. I want to clarify that this are my personal translations, which I've been working on since 2019. Nothing on the folder is related to the group-work on the game's translation, official game files and coding, since it only includes files that I've created. For that reason, the translations for each game chapter appear as pdf scripts, instead of it being a ROM translation.
Today I received some older Future Diary-related magazine advertisements! It’s a bit tricky to currently timeline them, so any help would be appreciated!
This first one comes from Shonen Ace, it includes Yuno Gasai and Eiji Hoshimiya (from Big Order, another project of Sakae Esuno’s) on the cover, along with a feature on Blu-Rays and DVDs for the Future Diary anime.
This second one only features a small section for Future Diary: Mosaic-Keshi/Mosaic Erased.
Sorry for the absence in posting, I’m still kind of getting used to Tumblr, but I promise to be more active soon!
These are such nice finds! I love looking through old Shonen Ace leaflets, they’re like a time machine and often include advertisements for things I never knew existed (that cute little Mai figure omg).
Now to timestamp them! The first is a promotional leaflet for the February 2012 edition of Shonen Ace, which was special for introducing Big Order and the Nichijou Mai figure.
Funnily enough, they made a video advert for its presale, voiced by both Yukiteru and Yuno’s VAs!
The second one is a paper bookmark and leaflet that includes adverts for the 9th volume of Lucky Star, the 1st volume of Zannen Hakase, and of course, the release of Future Diary Mosaic Keshi. All these works were set to release in December of 2011, so I assume the bookmark dates back to November or maybe even October of 2011. Here’s an auction I found for it too!
Hello! I'm not sure if you've already done so before since I just found your post about them, but would you be willing to share your dsi themes? They look so good! I want to make some as well but still need to figure out how to :[
Sooo I intended to post these on the official page a while ago, but completely forgot about it because I couldn’t figure out how to do the pull requests on the twilight menu github. Thanks for reminding me I still hadn't posted them! Anyway, since I still can’t figure out how to do the pull requests, I’ll share the themes directly on here with a little tutorial:
How to add my custom DSI themes
You can find the folder for each theme here. Simply download the folder of the theme you’d like to install.
As for the installation process, you’ll need to have Twilight Menu on your DSi in order to apply the theme (just in case anyone reading doesn't know how to do it, here’s the guide for DSi modding).
To add the themes, access the contents of your SD card and head to the _nds folder. Once there, you have to access the theme directory for Twilight Menu. This folder is located inside TWiLightMenu > dsimenu. Now, all you have to do is paste the folder for the theme you downloaded inside the “themes” folder.
After this, you can remove your SD card from your PC and insert it into the DSi to boot into Twilight Menu. To load the theme, all you have to do is go to the settings in Twilight Menu by pressing the SELECT button on your DSi. This will bring you to the DS Lite menu, the settings are located on the DS icon (bottom middle of the screen). Within settings, scroll to the “Custom Theme” option and press A. Here you should see the names of your themes, and to select one simply press A, then exit settings by pressing B twice.
Btw, in case you’re interested on making your own DSi themes, I followed the following tutorials:
This Youtube video gives you the basics on making a theme, which include backgrounds and audio. It's a good rundown and easy to follow if you just want to create those two elements.
This tutorial goes more in depth, showing you how to make not just backgrounds and audio but also custom icons and frames. And a little piece of advice I learned the hard way: to make any type of icons or frames I heavily advise using GIMP over any other image editor, it’s the only one that properly works for this.
After being hit by the brick that was the last devlog, I think I’ve finally gone through all of the stages of grief to accept that Burial may be coming out before the Decay finale. My newfound lucidity has also made me notice a couple of trends, both from the author and from the fandom, as well as gain a little better understanding as to why we’re getting Burial for the next update. So... let’s talk about it.
In my long analysis post that I made about Decay last year, I mentioned a trend I was beginning to notice from the author regarding overcorrection. To quote my original take:
The author, as offline as she appears to be, is keenly aware of people’s opinions of the game and takes quite the contrarian attitude to people who miss the point of the story (something I can’t blame her for entirely, and seems to be the reason why things escalated so much in this chapter)...
I’m glad the author is aware of people’s criticisms and takes the time to sort through them, but part of me wishes she didn’t try to over-explain some plot points. The thing that I originally loved about the game was the subtle storytelling, how it takes you a couple of playthroughs to fully understand everything lying beneath the surface. It plays tricks with you and makes you think about the characters’ true intentions, goals and desires, all the way until they spiral out of control and pretenses can’t be kept anymore.
This was in response to the changes made in episode 2, especially regarding the rephrasing of the choices leading to the Burial route, as well as a comment from one of the NPCs in the high school Decay flashback.
I was hoping this wouldn’t continue, but it seems like the author’s doubling down on it, even expanding the comment from the high school NPC to be a clear call-out to people who seem to project their kinks onto Andrew and Ashley’s relationship. I understand what she was meaning to get at, asking for people to look deeper into the story rather than taking it as mindless goon bait, but my question is… was this really necessary? The original NPC dialogue was already crossing the line between cheekiness and annoyance, but now it’s a straight up steel bat beating me in the face black and blue.
I’m aware that the literacy levels are plummeting right now, and I too have seen one too many dumb takes about this game, but that’s the nature of writing anything remotely transgressive these days. You can’t create a story like this and expect everyone to get it when even the average adult struggles reading anything above high school level. Some people take things at face value, and that’s okay. Some people simply want to goon to anything they find on the internet, and there’s nothing you can do about that. Ultimately, you can’t police who will enjoy the game or their motivations behind it. If that’s not who you’re writing for, then the quality of the writing itself will make it obvious. But scolding your audience and beating any bit of subtlety to the ground is not only doing a disservice to the fans, but to the game itself by cheapening the storytelling and sending mixed signals. Cuz yeah, it’s totally not inconsistent to complain about people projecting their kinks onto the characters, while also creating promotional material like this:
I know it may sound harsh, but she reaped the gooner audience by sowing the seeds. And that’s not to say the game doesn’t have value beyond that, hell I’m here because I see the value, but just because the game alludes to sexual taboos doesn’t mean it can’t also be profound. It’s a misconception I often see, perhaps as a result of purity culture, where believing that any piece of content with a strong sexual element is vapid and devoid of value, when those traits aren’t mutually exclusive. I believe the author is aware of this, or should be given her story is a prime example of this, but it’s something she should own rather than negate.
Now, I know that’s a lot to say for a small NPC comment. While it may be an insignificant piece of dialogue now, if she keeps doubling down on the overcorrections and trying to placate a holier than thou audience, that’s only going to take away from the story and hinder the actual message. It’s inconsistent, and also an unnecessary slap to the face to many of the fans who support her.
And speaking of inconsistencies… we have the new Burial at Sea ending.
Just to clarify, I actually like this ending, but I like it in the same way that I like the brain tumors vision; they’re both mock endings, ridiculous, but funny and entertaining if you don’t take them too seriously. That said, there are a couple of glaring inconsistencies in the writing of this ending, namely Ashley being disgusted at Andrew for wanting sex from her, when previously in the route she said she wouldn’t mind indulging him if that meant using it as leverage. More importantly, is the sudden drop of Andrew’s mask, suddenly going from deep denial and aversion to the vision to full-on hitting on Ashley. This I find more glaring than Ashley’s disgust, because at least that can be explained by Ashley’s disinterest in sex and fear of tipping the odds in Andrew’s favor by pushing the issue further. However, the change in Andrew’s attitude is so stark, so aggressive, it almost feels like whiplash. And that’s not to say Andrew’s above being nasty, as we’ve clearly seen in the Decay route, he’s capable of that and so much more. But it’s more so that I fear the overcorrections extend to Andrew’s attitude.
In the early stages of the game, many people were quick to point fingers at Ashley as the sole cause of everything toxic in their relationship, while babying Andrew for being a victim of her manipulation. We know thanks to Decay that this isn’t the case, and that their issues carry an equal amount of weight in the relationship. As S&S Andrew puts it, her issues are all tangled up with his, some even caused by him, which is why introspection is needed in order to amend their relationship. When their problems escalate and can’t be ignored any longer, they each resort to their own violent ways, Andrew more so than Ashley due to his growing frustration, and also because he's much stronger than her. It’s important to bring this up because it explains why we may be seeing more of Andrew’s abusive nature in Burial. Nemlei has previously said that true “chaos and mayhem” can only be achieved by unearthing the rot within, meaning that burying their issues is not conducive to an improvement in their relationship. That being said…
It feels like more and more of the content we’ve been getting lately regarding Burial is hinting at a big escalation towards Andrew’s abusive tendencies, akin to his attitude in Shots and Such. What I fear, and truly hope isn’t the case, is that it’s a result of overcorrection, to really drive home the fact that Andrew isn’t simply a victim of Ashley. It’s still too early to say, but seeing this growing trend from Nemlei isn’t giving me too much confidence.
I’m aware though that she has said each route, Burial and Decay, will have their respective good and bad endings, and I don’t think this has changed. Decay has shown us the absolute worst from Andrew and Ashley’s relationship in S&S, but has also hinted at a positive outcome for the main route, so I imagine something similar will also happen in Burial. Though it would be a little redundant to have two endings so similar in nature to one another, but who knows what Nemlei has in store.
I will say that the latest devlog has had a lot of people doomposting about the game, saying things like “we’ll never get a good ending,” “their relationship is doomed to fail,” “the only good ending will be them separating since Nemlei is mocking shippers,” and worst of all, people legit thinking Ashley will be getting with Six Eyes romantically. Ashley “I’d rather let him kill me than live without him” Graves. While I don’t discard a possible ending where the cult manipulates Ashley into becoming their leader and somehow getting rid of Andrew, I don’t see it as more than a fail state or a bad end like S&S. As much as Ashley may threaten to leave and latch onto someone else, she’s incapable of it. All bark no bite.
She doesn’t want to shoot Andrew in Decay, much less let him kill himself and leave her all alone. She feels empty without him, since he’s all she’s ever had. You can try to replicate that dynamic with someone else, as we see briefly in Decay where Ashley tries to banter with the entity, only for it to not reciprocate. You can try, but after your entire life has been shaped around a single person, it’s near impossible to grow out of that habit. Ashley knows this, and would be miserable without him. It’s why she doesn’t leave. So any ending where she leaves Andrew out of her own volition to join Six Eyes would ultimately be a dead end, as she’ll feel empty and alone no matter what, not to mention leaving him still doesn’t address any of her underlying issues with being incapable of growing up and moving on. (side note: I have a hc where an ending like this is called Leyley and Leyley alone. It’s a phrase used in Burial and sounds cool, so there’s that.)
Anyway, all this to say that, despite the concerns I voiced earlier, I haven’t lost hope on seeing their relationship improve, as I find that the game would feel kind of pointless without an ending that allows us to break the cycle of abuse. I know that these are supposed to be horrible characters doing horrible things, but there’s a particular line in Decay involving one of Andrew’s theories that I always draw back to:
Have these horrible people really crossed the line of no return, or is there hope that something good, even a sliver of it, can be built from the heaping pile of garbage that is their lives. To me at least, that’s what the game has always been about, and perhaps that’s the reason why we’ve been seeing so much of the abusive side of their relationship as of late (and possibly why we’re getting this side of Burial before Decay Pt. 2). Leaving the true resolution of their issues for last, the calm after the storm if you will.
It explains why the sudden change in development. If we get to see them together working past their issues in the final Decay ending, it’ll kinda cheapen the experience going into Burial, since you already know how it’s gonna end, or rather how it could end if these two actually addressed their issues. I don’t think Nemlei is actually sending the shippers of the fandom to go fuck themselves after all the lead-up she’s created to a potentially good ending between them. That would be shooting herself in the foot and completely contradicting everything we’ve seen in the game so far (not to mention hella dumb, like, brain tumors Andrew level of dumb). Now, this still doesn’t explain why Burial got developed so quickly in comparison to Decay (yeah, I’m still not over that), but at least this speculation of mine kind of appeases my search for answers. That’s all from me for now, until the next progress report.
Given that’s it’s very likely we’ll be getting a new TCOAAL chapter soon (as per the author’s words on the latest devlog: “Next report will have all the details about the next major patch, including which episode will be released and its release date.”), I think it’s important we discuss just what the fuck this new devlog was, and what it implies about the development of the game.
So, it’s pretty clear that the new devlog is teasing Burial as the next chapter to be released, along with a new mock ending for the route called Burial at Sea (in case you’re curious on how to get the ending and new achievement go > Questionable Burial Door > “Never” > Finish the chapter).
Now, the first hour that this devlog was out I was like “ohh Nemlei you silly goose, I’m not falling for the oldest trick in the book.” I was fully convinced that the whole thing was a sham and that the real devlog would drop in the next hour or two, cuz there’s just no way, right… right?
... This seems way too elaborate to just be a simple troll, however. Fully drawn CGs, a new video teaser + a new mock ending related to Burial. All signs seem to point to Burial (aka episode 3B) to be the next release. However…
The whole thing reads like a joke. Do forgive my skepticism, we are on April Fools after all, but the timeline simply doesn’t add up. We know Decay Part 2 has been in development since October of 2024, when the author announced that Part 1 was completed and opened the poll for us to vote on whether shipping both parts of Decay together or separately. Fast-forward to March of 2025, where the author clearly stated in a devlog that Burial’s development hadn’t started yet.
Decay Part 2, a conclusion and possibly shorter chapter than all of Burial combined, has been in development for well over a year and a half. Burial, on the other hand, could only have started development on March of 2025 at the earliest (and it’s possible it started later than that, given the developers were probably busy with the release of Decay part 1 in April). This means Burial, a chapter possibly equal in length to Decay, has only been in development for about a year at the earliest, likely less. Yet, I’m supposed to believe it’s somehow more advanced than Decay Part 2? Something's not adding up, especially when you consider Decay Part 1 had been in development since before July of 2023 (aka over a year and a half of development):
I don’t doubt the CGs that we’re seeing in the new devlog are from Burial, but the statements from the author feel awfully suspicious. My theory is that, since the episode that will be released next hasn’t been announced yet, it’ll probably be Decay Part 2 and the author is using Burial CGs to troll and avoid spoilers from Decay. We’ll see what happens in May, since we’re most likely getting the announcement then, and perhaps this post will age like milk, but I don’t actually think we’re getting Burial just yet. It feels odd to release Burial when Decay hasn’t been completed yet. Though I may be speaking from bias, since I don’t want to start a new route without having the narrative conclusion to the previous one (plus I’ve been dying to see the ending for the cliffhanger, so this whole thing kind of disappointed me ngl). They say denial is the first stage though, so who knows. If Burial is actually releasing first then holy shit was it cooked up fast. Though I do wonder if it'll also be split into two chapters like Decay...
Now, let’s talk a little more about the CGs and leave the technical stuff aside, we have more Six Eyes stuff that definitely relates to Burial:
It seems like Ashley will become the new leader along with Six Eyes, and that will send Andrew up in a jealous frenzy. HOWEVER, I think there’s a mole amongst the Devlog’s CGs:
This reminds me of the wedding cake puzzle in Decay Cliffhanger, where if you cut up the Leyley plushie, the TV turns red:
This could possibly be a dream/introspection for Andrew (as what are the odds of a TV in the real world airing an episode of Andy and Leyley). So, I have a feeling this CG might be related to Decay. Again I could be wrong, but this one reads more of Decay than Burial.
Update: Just realized these scenes are actually in the game and not hidden in the files, looks like I have to play the whole game again and stop jumping the gun. Whoopsie.
There are also new CGs hidden in the game files, possibly for Burial that relate quite a bit to Ashley. If these are for Burial, then this further reinforces the theory of Burial focusing more on Ashley:
Also, Ashley’s birthday is confirmed to be September 21st 199X in the hospital pic. Neat. (And if she was born in the 90’s, then the game would actually be taking place in the 2010’s, which kind of changes up one of the author’s earlier statements about the game taking place between the 90’s and early 2000’s...)
I'm honestly a little scared about Burial... all I hope is that it's not a repeat of Shots and Such. I'm putting my trust on you Nems.
I don't think Burial's out of the question. Makeup video Andrew acts way too different than how is he from Decay, they're at the motel they were in at the start of Chapter 2 (which they agreed to go to on Ch. 2 Burial end), and they still have the hitman's car, which they lost on Decay. Also, Nemlei didn't give a solid release date for Burial (Pt. 1?), so it's entirely possible it'll be released around the end of the year to total to ~1.5 year development that happened for Decay Pt. 1. The biggest curveball is the mole/demon mark isn't found on his hand in the video, but it's either an oversight or it could just fade in and out.
I think that Burial was developed simultaneously to foreshadow what will happen in Decay Pt. 2 and maybe Nemlei faced writer's block for Decay. New bonus content has confirmed we can take anything said or done in Decay to possibly happen in Burial (which can explain the same red TV in Decay and Burial). Also, Burial has already set up that other unresolved issues remain on Andrew's part, because while he is convinced Ashley truly trusts him and to let go of his mask that hurts him more than helps him now, he still easily gets jealous, he sees no problem physically threatening Ashley, and he's not very verbally communicative of what he wants.
I also think it's possible we will get a Shots & Such parallel in Burial. It makes sense to demonstrate two different scenarios of domestic abuse between the two depending on who started that physically abusive stage of their relationship. In Decay, it was Ashley, while in Burial, it seems to be Andrew. Andrew's reaction to that abuse was an explosive murderous rage due to the constant disrespect he gets despite providing so much to Ashley, that then cooled down because he's so used to not having freedom and being at the mercy of Ashley's whims, then it explodes again due to the same disrespect. Ashley's reaction can be horror and confusion, especially since she's trying to be a provider instead of relying on Andrew all the time, but Andrew has problems with it for whatever reason, and she will explode towards this.
I agree that the video and most of the CGs we got on this devlog (and the ones since June) have most likely been from Burial. Though I didn't initially notice the lack of Andrew's mark... maybe it's an oversight since it's present on both Questionable and Sane, maybe it's on purpose... I'm not sure which of those two routes will lead down the bad path, since both seem equally plausible in my mind. I originally would've guessed Questionable seeing the updated dialogue of "this is not going to go down how you expect." But after seeing the Burial at Sea ending, where Andrew loses it over the prospect of never having Ashley... I'm not so sure anymore. We'll see, since it's still too early for speculation.
Anyway, I guess my point with the original post was just voicing my confusion. Again, I don't doubt Nemlei is working on Burial now, it's just odd the way she announced it. Suddenly it's closer to finishing than Decay Pt.2 despite being in production for way less time, no mention of whether Burial will be split into two (which is something to note because Burial could very well be shorter than Decay, hence the quick development), and leaving the next release to "whichever chapter's done first." Which sounds kinda messy ngl. I'm honestly being a bit impatient because I want to see the Decay ending first, and I'm concerned we'll be getting more of abusive Andrew before that'll happen. Anyway, hopefully the next report will be in May or June, and hopefully we get a little more information because this whole thing feels sus to me.

Quick emergency post incoming. Y'all have probably already seen the news, but I also wanted to make a short little dedicated post to add to this information. It was recently announced that the plushie line Kurmitapinui will be releasing a Future Diary collection! Which includes not only our titular characters, but others like Nishijima, Tsubaki and Akise (who haven't gotten their own dedicated merch before!)
What possessed them to do this? No idea! Though this plushie company has a lot of different anime franchises under its belt, it's still surprising they'd make merch of an older show with such little attention at the moment. It might have something to do with acquiring the rights... so hopefully, hopefully we get to see more Future Diary merch come out in the next years.
To add to the information that is already going around, these little beans are currently up for preorder (they release on July of this year). A single plushie is 1100 Yen, or around 7 USD, and the full pack is 6600 Yen, which is around 42 USD (see here for more information). An important thing to note is that these are actually blind box keychains, so you don't get to pick the one you actually want:
Here's an example of a collection. The full pack is also made up of six characters (which explains why they chose to include some of the side characters aside from Yuno and Yukki). My advice is that if you want one in particular you should buy the whole pack, since a full unopened pack is guaranteed to come with all six characters.
I'll be honest... I'm really burnt out from the blind box fad, but hey I'll take what I can get. I never thought we'd get new merch of the series, and on top of that to get representation of characters like Nishijima and Akise is making me hopeful we might see more in the future (perhaps not of this brand though, seeing they cap their collections at six characters I don't think they'll make more). Anyway, if you need me I'll be in the corner of my room freaking out about this.
As of March 6th, Japanese goods company Animate Online has announced Future Diary “Kurumitapi” plushes up for pre-orders!
They’re expected to be released in July of 2026, adorable!
I hope they release more characters in the future, a full collection of every diary owner would be totally awesome! However, I’m still very grateful that this franchise is still getting new merchandise even in 2026.

Please reblog this post so it can reach as many people as possible. This is all for now!
The most I've seen about this are rumors, nothing definitive. That's not to say it isn't true, just that I'm not so sure about it myself. If anyone knows more or has heard about this, please let me know!
What pieces of merch do you think are the rarest/most sought after in the MN community?
I'd say at least for us western fans, most MN merch is inherently rare due to it only releasing in Japan (save for the stuff that was licensed by Great Eastern Entertainment). Because of this, I'd say that rarest doesn't necessarily equal most sought after in our case, since a lot of the rare merch isn't super well-known. For rarest, I'd suggest some of the merch that was put up as raffle gifts back when the manga was first in circulation; among these were a Yuno t-shirt signed by Esuno, a wall clock with the silhouettes of the 12 diary owners, mp3 players and the second part of the Hanako and the Teller of Allegory x Future Diary crossover. Here are some example pics:
As for most sought after, definitely the Yuno RAH figure (a.k.a the first Yuno figurine we had). This item is not only rare but insanely expensive (I've seen it going for upwards of 3000$, plus many reported scam listings). Of course, being the only Yuno figure we had for a very long time, she was really sought after, and probably one of the most famous pieces of merch in the fandom.
That's just one piece of merchandise I know for a fact I'll never get to see in my life lol. To see pictures of the products I mentioned and more, please check out my merch master list. I'm sure there's even rarer stuff out there that I forgot to mention, but I'm a bit short on time since I have a lot of things going on right now (woohoo getting invaded by the US). Anyway, anything I missed should be on the master list.
At last, my video review for Another World is out! This video contains a deep dive on all things related to the show, from the cast and interviews, to an overview of each episode, music and symbolism present in the series, as well as how it managed to capture the essence of Future Diary while maintaining the live-action format. I hope y’all enjoy this video review and my own little commentary (and hopefully y’all can overlook some of the shortcomings in terms of quality…).
I mentioned this before, but Another World is heavily copyright protected, so I had to do some workarounds when inserting the clips. It can be a little distracting at times, but it was necessary to keep the video up. If the video still gets copyright claimed, I’ll just have to take it down, as I don’t want to risk my channel facing a copyright strike. Fingers crossed I won’t have to do that though. Anyway, enough with the disclaimers. Hope you enjoy this yapping session lol.
Hey, just wanted to give a quick update for the Another World video I was planning on making (in case anyone's still curious about it), since it's been a while. The process of making this video has been painfully slow and riddled with technical difficulties (my old laptop died in the middle of editing and I had to recover what I could ;-;). But so far, I'm happy to say I've got about 70% of the video done. It's also currently sitting at the 1 hour and 20 minute mark, and I'm not planning on making it any longer than that lol. I don't want to give out a date yet cuz I don't want to jinx myself, but if everything goes well, it should be out by late December or January.
I'll be honest... it's not the highest quality video out there, after all it's my first time taking on a project like this. The audio is certainly not that great since I lack a proper microphone (and my voice sounds like 12 year-old going through puberty) but I hope that it's still entertaining enough to watch. Anyway... this project has been delayed for long enough, so I'll refrain from nitpicking every little detail.
Thank you for the input on the Another World post, I hope the video is to your liking.
An update to the update: I have good news and bad news.
Good news is I overestimated how much was left to edit, and managed to finish the video much sooner than expected!
Bad news is that it turns out Another World is heavily protected by copyright. Like... you can't even use clips without audio, it will still get blocked globally. As a workaround, much of the clips in the video will be filtered (some much more heavily than others). It's a bit distracting, but it's the best I can do. That said, I'm still a little paranoid about my channel possibly getting a strike, so if the video gets struck at some point in the future, I will just take it down and upload it elsewhere. I've battled the content ID system for too long now.
Anyway, if all goes well, expect to see the video in a couple of days.

Happy (fanon) birthday to the yandere queen herself!
Fun fact: the majority of sites that have information about Sakae Esuno (the author of Future Diary) mention that his birthday is on November 17th. I feel like that is a big reason why Yuno's fan-appointed birthday falls on November 16th.
Another less fun fact: I actually had forgotten that today was Yuno's birthday until tomodachi life reminded me lmfao
(Look Yukki also came to celebrate! And Akise is the one wearing the mask, the little weirdo.)
Today’s post was a special request from @kimaterishi (thanks for the request!) who asked to see a post about Yuno’s diary entries. I compiled a good chunk of Yuno’s diary entries from the anime and included some of my personal commentary, but I didn’t want to just leave it at that. You see, there’s a lot to say when it comes to the diaries. That’s where the show gets its name after all! So, I decided to divide this post into different sections: one where I talk more in depth about Yuno’s entries, another about the diaries in the visual novel, and one where I talk more about the phones themselves. So with that out of the way, let’s dive in!
Yuno’s Diary:
As we know, Yuno’s diary focuses solely on Yukki, predicting his actions every 10 minutes. What’s interesting about this is that Yuno is one of the only diary owners to have her entries completely focus on someone else’s actions, besides her own. The only time we get to see this with another diary owner is perhaps the 3rd, as his diary documents his victims’ actions (similarly to how Yuno stalks Yukki), as well as the 7th’s exchange diary. The similarities among the three could be attributed to them having the same diary archetype.
This is something that is only brought up very briefly in the show (in the last MurMur skit). But there are actually four different diary archetypes. From left to right, they’re called: the Radar, the Searcher, the Organizer and the Supplier. (Note: the Watcher is another archetype, but only Bacchus has it).
The archetype models MurMur brings up are actually the same phones that Yukki, Yuno, Kurusu and Karyuudo have, just in different colors. So from what MurMur says, it would be safe to assume that Yuno’s archetype falls under the Searcher. I don’t feel like it’s necessary to explain what each archetype does, as the names are pretty self-explanatory, though I’m kind of confused with Kurusu’s diary being deemed an Organizer. He investigates stuff from his surroundings (similarly to the Radar), but he doesn’t really organize anything. I think maybe the Organizer stands for a diary that documents stuff for an organization (like 6th), so maybe that’s why Kurusu gets lumped in there, being the head of the police and all. This is how I think the archetypes are distributed among the diary owners:
Radar: Yukki, Reisuke, Minene and Yomotsu.
Searcher: Yuno, Takao and Ai/Marco.
Organizer: Tsubaki and Kurusu.
Supplier: Kamado and Karyuudo.
Watcher: Bacchus.
With that out of the way, let’s get back to Yuno. Despite her diary only focusing on Yukki, it does include a few of her thoughts. We get the occasional “I love you’s” and “Yukki is so cool” in many of her entries, essentially Yuno fangirling over Yukki just existing lol. It is a very cute detail, and realistically how she would describe Yukki if she was writing these entries in real time. However, these little comments are actually a big deal, especially by the end of the show, since they show Yuno’s true feelings. We know for a fact that the diary can’t lie, rather it’s prone to the influence of the owner’s perspective. That’s why as much as Yuno tries to pretend she doesn’t care about 2nd-world Yukki near the ending, her diary entries reflect the opposite.
This especially makes her last diary entry so heartfelt. It happens very quickly, so it’s an easy detail to miss, but her last entry rewrites itself to say: “I finally found a place for me,” in reference to Yukki showing her that her life in the third world isn’t hopeless, and that she can find peace by ending the cycle of violence. And since we’re talking about her DEAD END here, we should also mention her HAPPY END entry.
This type of entry is rather unique, and isn’t seen among any other diary owners. That’s why it begs the question, just what is a HAPPY END? This is something I’ve always wondered, yet never found a real answer for (guess I finally found one of the infamous plot holes everyone complains about). My personal explanation, or rather headcanon for this, is that since DEAD ENDs exist to announce the death of an individual, and hence the end of the Future Diary, the HAPPY END would announce the completion of a goal. If you think about it, all the owners had a goal they were striving towards, besides becoming god. I like to imagine that maybe if the other diary owners had a HAPPY END, it would be about them reaching that goal (for example Minene marrying Nishijima and moving on from her past, Kurusu’s son surviving, Tsubaki making it out of her cell, etc.) It’s just that the diary owners never live past completing that goal. So maybe that’s why we never get to see other HAPPY ENDs… On the upside, they all seem to have better lives in the third world, so I guess they did achieve their happy ending in one way or another.
And speaking of the third world, I also want to mention other iterations of Yuno’s diary. We of course know what first-world Yuno’s diary is like, we see it many times, but we also get a few glimpses of second and third-world Yuno’s diaries:
We know from episode 22, that the one difference between first and second-world Yuno is how they refer to Yukki, and this naturally reflects on each of their diaries. Yuno originally called Yukiteru “Amano-kun,” which is the same nickname his friends call him by. It’s interesting that Yuno decided to change that to “Yukki” once she got to the second world. On one hand, it’s a way to distance herself from the first iteration of Yukiteru, but it’s also a much more intimate nickname, as she’s calling him by his first name (calling someone by their first name in Japanese is very straight-forward and not very polite if you aren’t already familiar with the person, and since second-world Yukki hadn’t really met her yet, it must’ve been quite the shock to him lol). In the third world, Yuno is still seen keeping a diary, but this one focuses on her family rather than Yukki. Of course, this is a reflection of things finally getting better in her family life, which is a very wholesome turn of events.
Lastly for this section, let’s talk about one more thing that’s unique about Yuno’s diary: her profile picture. It seems like the diary application has a slot for a profile picture, as seen from some of the stills in the anime (the picture on the left is from Yukki’s diary). However, Yuno is the only one who actually uses it:
I’ve mentioned this in an old post of mine, but Yuno has her iconic pink rabbit costume as her profile pic. I‘ve always wondered if this is a character she created or something (her fursona lol), but I think it’s pretty cute that she has an animal associated with her image. The one thing we don’t see from her phone that I’ve always been curious about is her wallpaper, though. We actually know what Yukiteru’s looks like, (a picture of the stars of course):
But what would Yuno’s be? Something cutesy maybe? Another picture of her rabbit persona? A picture of her family even? I could speculate forever, but it’s probably a picture of Yukki sleeping or something silly like that.
Diaries in the Visual Novel:
When I was originally sent the request for this post, the first thing that came to my mind were the diary entries from the visual novel, even though I knew I was probably being asked about the anime. But the game came to mind first because it’s the closest we actually get to seeing any of the diaries in this franchise (and that’s saying something, considering this series is literally named after the diaries). Not only do we get to see the diaries up close in the game, but we can read many of the entries as well.
For that reason, I thought it’d be nice to add a new document to the game translation folder, which compiles all of the diary entries found throughout the game. Here’s the link. (It's in the "Extra Content" folder of the game translation file).
And since I’ve already mentioned it, let’s go through some of my favorite entries from the game. Naturally, Yukki has the most variety and quantity when it comes to his diary entries, being the protagonist and all, but some of his observations add a lot more dimension to the characters. For starters, his comments on Yuno:
10:38 [Classroom 2 - C] Yuno brings the chocolates she made in cooking class. They’re heart shaped. The class starts teasing me about it.
12:37 [Inside the Venue] Yuno lays her hand on top of mine.
17:11 [Park] Yuno is approaching me to kiss her.
Even though it’s been a while since I translated the game, I still remember screaming when first I read these lol. Alas, we never see these moments actually happen in the game, but the fact that they were mentioned at all makes them canon in my head. (Also can we talk about how stinking adorable Yuno is? Like ignore all the stalking and killing for a sec, this woman makes her boyfriend little heart-shaped chocolates at school. She’s so silly ughhhh). Also:
16:12 [Game Arcade] There’s a whack-a-mole game. Yuno beats every mole that comes out and gets a high score.
That is in fact a very Yuno thing to do. Go get ‘em girly.
Next up are the entries about Yukki’s friends, which I absolutely adore:
12:50 [Classroom 2-C] Hinata and Kousaka are doing a milk drinking competition. It was very close between the two, but Hinata won.
14:15 [Art Room] Kousaka knocks over a bucket of paint. The floor is now covered in paint.
14:34 [Classroom 2-C] A wasp entered from the window. Hinata kills it instantly with a broom.
9:43 [Classroom 2-C] It’s recess time. Hinata trips while running through the hallway. Mao-chan puts a band-aid on Hinata’s knee.
14:12 [Classroom 2-C] Mao-chan looks happy because she took a picture of Hinata’s sleeping face. It seems like Hinata hasn’t noticed.
17:03 [Inside the Store] Kousaka is about to cry because he dropped a single fry.
Again, these guys are so silly. Kousaka crying over french fries is very real to me. And speaking of Hinata and Mao, we also have this little gem:
16:14 [Front of the Store] Hinata and Mao held hands while walking home.
These two are not beating the roommate allegations.
It’s also canon that Akise is the typical shoujo manga protagonist:
13:54 [Art Room] Akise-kun catches a stone statue that fell from a shelf. I hear a girl saying: “he’s so cool.”
9:32 [Classroom 2 - C] A lot of love letters come out of Akise - kun’s desk.
And that Takao is kind of a mediocre teacher:
10:36 [Classroom 2-C] Mr. Hiyama makes a mistake while writing on the chalkboard. He lies saying that he “wanted to see who would notice first.”
14:02 [Classroom 2 - C] Mr. Hiyama breaks a piece of chalk while writing on the board. This is the fifth one.
Side note, there’s a fun little detail in the Re:Write version of the game when it comes to Takao. Since Re:Write is dubbed, when you open the game, you’re greeted by one of the diary owners reading the title of the game out loud. All the diary owners pronounce Re:Write with a Japanese accent… except for Takao. Since he’s an English teacher, he pronounces “Re:Write” in an American accent. Not only that, but some of his diary entries in the game include little English phrases like “excellent” whenever they predict his attacks to be successful. I just think it’s very cute that, despite being a serial killer and all, being good at English isn’t just a part of his innocent teacher persona, it’s something he seems to genuinely enjoy.
Lastly, I want to end this with a personal headcanon of mine: Yukki is a cat person, specifically a calico cat kinda guy. Source:
9:52 [My House’s Garden] I groom a large calico cat with my hand.
Add this to that one scene in episode 23, where MurMur told Yuno to dress up as a calico cat to attract Yukki. This cannot be a coincidence, Yukki is cat boy confirmed.
The Phones:
I also wanted to talk about the phones themselves, since there’s some fun facts about them I don’t normally see people mention. First up, we have the ringtones. Interestingly enough, in the official OST, there are six phone ringtones listed. These are actual ringtones used in the show, and they each belong to a specific character:
Ringtone #2: Minene (this is the one that appears the most throughout the show).
Ringtone #4: Akise
Ringtone #5: Kousaka
Ringtone #6: Mao
The only ones I wasn’t able to find are ringtones #1 and #3. Considering I’ve only skimmed through some scenes, it’s possible I missed when they appeared, but I’m very curious about who they actually belong to (and they most likely belong to a character given that all the others do as well). I would especially like to know who #1 belongs to, because I've had that as my ringtone for ages and it’s been driving me crazy not knowing which character has it lol. If anyone knows, please let me know. I will say the characters that for sure don’t have those as their ringtones are:
Yukiteru: he always has his phone on vibrate (boring)
Rea: she has a cute ringtone, but it’s not in the OST
Ai: at least in her flashback, her phone has generic beeping
Kurusu: generic beeping
Hinata: she has a cute ringtone, but it’s not in the OST
There’s also other characters like Reisuke, Tsubaki and Yomotsu who don’t have phones, so those are out of the question as well. My best guess is that #1 belongs to Yuno and #3 to Nishijima or Bacchus, based on vibes alone. But then again, I’m not sure.
Now to end the post, let’s talk about the phone models. While I can’t find any sources that talk about what specific models the diaries were based on, it’s always fun to speculate. So here’s what I found for each owner (excluding Tsubaki and the 8th, since they don’t have phones):
Yukki: I have no sources for this, but I’m 99.99% sure that his phone was based on the Vodafone V301Sh, which besides some differences on the front, it’s nearly identical to his. It even has a small dot on the lower part of the screen, where the Vodafone logo would be. Some other close matches are the Docomo F-10A and the Sharp SH903i.
Yuno: the closest match I’ve found is the Docomo Sharp Aquos Keitai SH‑06G. While it is pretty darn close, it most certainly wasn’t based on this model as it came out much later than the anime (it’s actually an android phone). However, there are other similar models that date back to the early 2000s, such as: the Sharp SH902iS and the Sharp SH-06A, while the front of it isn’t exactly the same, the back is very similar to Yuno’s, with the big round camera; there’s also the Fujitsu F-01A, which is similar in shape and color. I haven’t been able to find any phone that has the white stripe on the front like hers, so I think it is likely a stylistic choice rather than something based on a real model.
Takao: I had a hard time finding something that matched the frontal clock on the screen, but I think the LG Dlite GD570 is a pretty close match.
Kurusu: just like Yuno, his phone has a lot of similarities with some Docomo models, especially the Sharp Aquos Shot SH010, for the camera position, rotating screen and hour indicator. The Sharp SH902iS could be another inspiration.
Reisuke: he doesn’t have a phone, but his picture book is very much based on a real-life model, which are the Showa Note Japonica books. I actually talked about this before (in my first post ever), which also included a printable version of his diary.
Ai and Marco: another one I’m 99.99% sure of, it’s the Docomo F-07B, aside from the shape of the buttons, it is nearly identical.
Minene: again, very sure of this one, it’s the Samsung e250. It is nearly identical to hers, the only difference being the camera position, though a lot of Samsung’s slider phones look similar to hers.
Karyuudo: this one has such a strange design, I struggled to find anything that looked like it, specifically because of the slanted hinge. The closest I found was the Toshiba TS003, but I’m not really convinced by it.
Bacchus: I’m honestly torn on this one, because on one hand, I would love to say his phone is inspired by Apple and pretend that Bacchus is some evil version of Steve Jobs, but his phone is actually very clearly inspired by the Docomo F-12C. Compared to the other phones on here, this is the one I have the most certainty of, because it is a straight up copy of the design, down to the logo.
Yomotsu: there are a lot of different models that could’ve inspired this one, but because of the unique button position, I’m gonna go with the Sharp PA-VR10E.
For funsies, here’s a visual comparison of each:
In conclusion, someone in charge of the character design really liked Docomo.
