EZ Flash iV

GBA Flashcards have been around for a long time.  Since the days when the Gameboy Advance and Gameboy Advance SP were the kings of the hand held consoles.  Back then they had excellent game compatibility and it was the only way you could carry 10-20 of your games all on one little card.  The EZ Flash IV has made a comeback as of late.

They also used Compact flash cards at first, but once they got out of favor that changed to mini sd cards.  They also had a limit of up to a maximum of 2GB micro SD cards.  Nothing bigger would work.  This was fine of course because back then the biggest card you could buy at a reasonable price was the 2GB cards.  Anything bigger and you were looking to pay quite a bit.

Sadly both Compact Flash and actual MiniSD cards are hard to find now unless you’re using a microSD card with a MINI SD adapter.  The EZ Flash guys realized this and ended up making a new version the ez flash GBA flashcard. 

As of last month, this new version now works with very common (and extremely cheap) micro SD and micro SDHC cards.   But that’s not the biggest deal with the latest version of the ez flash iv.  They not only updated the type of cards it can use, but also the firmware was updated for additional (read: Better) compatibility.  The EZ Flash iV now also support micro sd cards up to 32GB in size.  This basically allows you to store 16x more games, apps, emulators, movies, etc... on the card at once.

R4 3DS Emulator For Sega Genesis - Play Earth Worm Jim On Your 3DS

Earth Worm Jim is one of those platform games that seems to stand the tests of time. It has been released on numerous consoles since the original SNES release, and there's good reason for it. It has a very quirky and fun artistic style that is really unmatched in any other platform games of its day. And even today, playing it on my Nintendo 3DS with the help of my R4 3DS Card, it's a game that I load up and play more, through emulators for the DS that let me play SNES games, than many of the new DS games that have been released. A true testament to how good this game is.

The game was originally released on the Sega Genesis (mega drive for those mates overseas ;-) ) and the SNES version was though to be somewhat inferior to that version, due to the removing of a level and some voice overs... People generally agree that the SNES version had better in game music, and graphically it was a better game on the Snes than on the Genesis. If you have an R4 DS Card, you should get the emulator and play this amazing platform game.

I know I've been waiting (im)patiently for SSB to hit the Nintendo 3DS system, and while they are bringing it out, I was pretty surprised to find that Super Smash Bros is already available in the form of a 3DS homebrew game that you can download and play for free, providing you have a 3ds flashcard (I wrote about them here before)

How To Read Ebooks On Your Nintendo 3DS / 3DS XL

There has been talk of an official ebook reader coming to the 3DS and 3DS XL for quite some time now, but it will only be available in Japan, and as per usual with Nintendo, it could take years before it comes to USA and European shores.  Not to mention potential limits on the material we can lead (to keep it family friendly) and the list could go on and on.  

I love my 3DS XL!  SO much so that I try to do as much of everything on it as possible.  This doesn't mean that I just play as many 3DS games as I can get my hands on.  It means that I look for hacks or enhancements to the Nintendo 3DS XL all the time, in hopes of getting more functionality out of it.  

Last month I started using my 3DS XL as my dedicated ebook reader, and not using the soon to be released Japanese ebook setup from Nintendo, but instead a freeware / indie ebook reader.

It's actually super easy to do too.  You'll only need:

1. Your Nintendo 3DS / 3DS XL (or DS, DSi etc.. will work too!)

2. And R4 3DS Flash Card from here

3. The freeware Indie ebook reading software called iKuReader which you can download from here

It supports:

txt, fb2 and partial epub support

unicode support (utf-8)

normal and book-like layouts

install your favorite fonts

Just copy the ikureader.nds file over to the root of your micro SD card, then copy all of your ebooks that you want to read on your 3DS or Nintendo 3DS XL in to an folder on the microSD card for the R4 3DS called eBooks, and you're all set.   Let me know if any of you would want step by step directions with pictures, and I'll be happy to do so.

R4 Gold 3DS

The new R4 Gold 3DS has been updated to now work on the latest Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL and Nintendo 2DS systems with the new 6.3.0 update.  This includes the 3DS 6.3.0-12e, 6.3.0-12u and the 6.3.0-12j systems, which essentially includes every model of the 3DS, 3DS XL and the Nintendo 2DS systems world wide.

How To Read Ebooks On The Nintendo 3DS XL

Looks Like The R4 3DS got an update for the 6.1.0-x Nintendo 3DS systems

Nintendo released a couple of updates in the last few weeks for their

Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL console.  These updates were aimed at adding some eShop features a few others.  They released 6.0, which was a bit buggy - and also ended up rendering all of the R4 3DS type cards incompatible.  An official press released from the makers of the R4 card however now confirms that they have released a firmware update, that once again enables their cards to work and play on the 3DS and 3DS XL systems.

While these updates don't generally cause any issues with these homebrew / flash carts, sometimes they can make it so that the consoles don't recognize the cards themselves.

Skyrim Being Played On The Oculus Rift VR Headset

If only we have one of these to try out.  A gentleman by the name of Chris has one of the very first (and early) development version models of the Oculus Rift (you know, the virtual reality headset that's going to change the way we play our games) and he has taken the time to do what all of us probably wish we could do - record himself playing Skyrim with the headset.  There's not much more I can say that the video below can't explain all on its own.  All I can really say is that I am 100% JEALOUS!!!  Check it out.  This thing is going to really change the way we game!

1942 DS Remade For Freeware Play On Your Nintendo 3DS R4

Oh the good old days of quarter munching Arcade systems :)  I remember spending many a Saturday afternoon at my local arcade spending what little allowance I had left after buying up all the candy I could eat until I felt sick from the sugar high.

1942 was one of the best Arcade games the year it was released, and continue to steal quarters from gamers for a good several years to follow, especially if you consider all of the sequels it spawned.  1942 DS is a faithful-to-the-original Arcade emulator for the DS.  You'll need to get the MAME release of the game for the game files, and then you'll be able to shoot down the bad guys in this vertical scrolling shoot'em up game from the past. 

Each mission is exact to the arcade version - because you're running the arcade version itself.  You have to advance your plane and get as close to Tokyo as you can, to take down their air fleet.  A strange mission, considering it was made by one of Japan's biggest video game makers of the time.  But Capcom wanted to be faithful to the actual gameplay and have players playing a historically correct game.

I remember lineups for this game.  It's no wonder that it was Capcom's really big breakaway hit.  The gameplay is fun, addictive, and shoot 'em ups have excellent replay value.

With your R4 3DS card you'll be able to play this game once again, except this time on your Nintendo 3DS system.

Cannon Fodder For Nintendo 3DS

The very first game I truly fell in love with on my Amiga was a little game called Cannon Fodder.  Up to that point I was happy playing remakes of the older C64 games that were being ported over to the much better 16-bit Amiga computer.  But with Cannon Fodder, everything changed.  I realized that original games were few and far between... and this game was like a breath of fresh air.  The premise is simple (and rather funny).  You lead a squad of solders in a top down view style.  Your mission is to kill all the bad guys, rescue your fellow troops and get rid of all of the enemy camps that you can get rid of. Each "mission" consisted of several different stages, and they got harder and harder as the further along you were in the game.

The game received rave reviews (and a bit of criticism from mainstream media due to the war content) from almost every major gaming magazine of the day.  The media that had negative comments about it due to the style of game, totally missed the point of this game making a mockery of war, and combat in general... not actually endorsing it.

Thanks to some serious porting and coding by indie devs.. This game is now available on your Nintendo 3DS with the help of an R4 3DS or R4i Gold 3DS Card.

The 3DS version (which also works on the DS, and the DSI systems with the R4 type cards) is completely faithful to the original.  While it was first released on the Amiga, the port is actually of the Atari ST version of the game and includes every single missing and level from the Atari ST game itself. The game premise remains faithful to the original. You must control your squad of soldiers and make your way around various lanscapes and jungle terrain to the heart of the enemy territory.  Get all the bad guys, rescue your comrades, and destroy the bases.  It's a top down strategy / real time strategy game, filled with truly hours of fun.

The controls on the DS and Nintendo 3DS versions are phenomenal.  You can use your stylus / touch screen combination for some of the weapon selections and your d-pad to move your characters and the landscape.

Just got my new R4 3DS RTS Card, lets see what it does.

Well, as expected, I received my R4 3DS RTS Card that I ordered last week from the official store.  I have been using an R4i Gold for the last year and a half, and before that was using the original R4 DS on my Nintendo DS lite system (I never went and got a DSi console... I like my GBA games way too much to give them up!)

So far, I like what I have seen. This card seems to be a whole lot better than my R4i Gold (which will go to my little brother who has been wanting his own for quite some time).  The menu systems, as I suspected, were very similar.  They're not the exact same, but then they are 2 different cards.  But the main functions and use of the cards are pretty much identical.

What is NOT identical is that this new card, has 2 different chips in it.  One for the main files you are using at the time that it loads and updates from the micro SD card you need to use this card.  And also, the fact that it has a real time save feature built in.  This takes me back to the days of the Game Genie for my Super NES console.  The game genie had cheat codes (so does this card by the way) and it also had a little function built in that let you actually hit the button on the game genie, and it would bring up a save menu.  What this let you do was quickly save your game, in whatever place you were.  So that the next time you loaded up the game, you could actually start off from the exact same place, at the exact same moment you had been in the game, prior to hitting the game genie save button.  

I remember using this a lot to beat games like Mario Bros, and Mario World and Contra, to name just a few of the awesome games.  Being able to keep taking a whack at the end boss was always super fun.  Still hard as all hell to beat, but at least I had a bit of an edge with the real time save.

The first thing I am going to do is pre-load this sucker with some of the cool emulators that are available for the 3DS XL.  I'll be trying nesDS, SnesDS, and my favorite emulator of them all (well, my favorite game system, haven't tried the emulator yet :) ) which is NeoGeoDS.  I'm looking forward to some really great classic gaming for the next week or so, while I get to know my new RTS card even better.

If any of you are interested, I'll be updating my blog with details on how to use the emulators with some step by step setup instructions for all of you out there that don't know exactly how to download or use them on the R4 cards.
