– There was a jolt in his upper back at the first discernible sound of her voice - a seize in his shoulders that yanked his forearms up ‘n hands right off his keyboard midway through a line a’ code – froze him tight on a reflexive assumption that something else bad had happened - but…
…it unwound a little through… more parsing through layers?
‘Nah - that was Zoe you just heard - she ain’t gonna do anything. Not like Mom or Dad’s come bargin’ in here.’
‘You heard Zoe; swell, I guess, that means she’s up ‘n fine. That’s the opposite of somethin’ else bad happenin’.’
…He was still… slow to turn himself around in his chair.
Even as he did… you know - hear it was a plain ‘n simple question, and not one at all delivered harshly. He just… swiveled his chair via small steps ‘n shuffles of the soles of his shoes about a quarter of the way. Kept his back twistin’ for another quarter; craned his neck for another. Stared at her… somehow not fully getting that she looked to be smiling till after two, two-and-a-half seconds of staring her down like some kind of a… haunted guinea pig.
…And at the culmination o’ that, he shut his eyes - indecisively, maybe half as fast as was… strictly unconscious. Takin’ a moment to… grapple with the part o’ his mind that, under less… shitty circumstances, woulda snidely snickered it off (ironically, like it weren’t no big deal), and said ‘ – was a pain in my ass, but yeah – !!’
Reconcile the whole fact that… again, under less… shitty circumstances, he woulda definitely been in the mood, but here, well. Decidedly wasn’t.
…All he managed was the last part - a stilted, tautly-breathed “ yeah – …! ” before…
…He started kickin’ around to…
…go back to a ten-thirty position from his desk again.
Back slouched. Breathin’ going just a little too fast and a heatwave swellin’ and sweltering in the back of his brain on the return to immediacy of everything that’d just gone down, but - also-ironically, well… distracting himself properly, now that she was back up.
Not that there was really anything to smother out the additional component of:
Do more. Do more do more it ain’t fine yet say something –
…A swallow part o’ the way unsticking into –
“ – How you holdin’ up – …? ”
A couple of jerks ‘n sways to bring himself back closer to center, and a first few… erratic taps and strokes of fingers on keys again.
‘Pologies, Zoe, he ain’t tryin’a…
…ignore you, or anything; if he can ‘cut’ his degree of direct exposure-slash-thought to a stressful situation, it’s just that, well…
…as it is, he’ll… ‘baby’ himself a bit.
Regardless of him facing away from her, She answers his question. ❝ Well, m’face hurts an’ so does m’ whole damn head, but, I’m doin’ alright other than that . Also... ❞ She clears her throat. ❝ I know I ain’t the lightest person ever, so, thank ya fer carryin’ me... I owe ya. ❞ She hummed, pulling the doll closer to her chest. She felt like she was a kid again, which was comforting.
Back then, daddy wasn’t as aggressive with them. He never hit them. Not ‘til Luca was like eight an’ she was ‘round six. Even then, he only hit Lucas, which made it less dangerous for her, but still, it wasn’t right.
She remembers the days she and Lucas were stuck inside because of rain, and they’d take a flashlight, make a blanket fort, and read stuff about science. Some days it was solely biology, others it was physics, and even more, there was days they’d just completely skip out on readin up, an’ they’d just tell eachother stories.
Those were good days. And she’d almost always had the doll that was currently in her arms at her side somehow.
❝ Thanks, Luke. ❞ She repeated, though this time not for the same reason. This one was a thank you for putting up with her. For being her best friend. For telling her things he couldn’t tell their folks. For trusting her the most he could.
