BACKGROUND.

Rachel’s mother, Makenna Barclay, comes from a long line of psychics residing in Portnahaven, Scotland. Every single Barclay family member embraced this power, training on making it stronger and controllable, and Makenna was no different. However, it wasn’t a power she particularly enjoyed having. It had obvious pros, but the cons that came with it weren’t something Makenna embraced. In addition to that, the Barclays had a duty to serve their small town and as much as Makenna loved the people, she didn’t want a life where she felt like she was used.

The turning point was when the Barclays wanted to form an alliance with the psychics of Ireland, as means to strengthen the family ties and see just how much they can strengthen the psychic blood. And just like that, Makenna packed her bags and fled the town, ending up in Barcelona. There she met Farhad Nazeri, a psychology PhD student, and the two had a whirlwind romance - engaged and married in less than a year of knowing each other. After graduation, they moved to Queens, New York, to be near Farhad’s family and within a few months, Makenna fell pregnant with Lara and a couple of years after that, fell pregnant with Rachel.

During that entire time, Makenna had hid her psychic powers and tried to turn them off - not even telling Farhad about them. All she wanted was a normal life. It wasn’t lost on her that her daughters would have a 50/50 chance of becoming psychics, and she had kept a close eye on each of them for symptoms. However, that was cut short when Makenna lost her life to a car accident coming home from work when Rachel was seventeen.

Lara and Rachel were raised in a typical loving family. They grew up spoiled, everything handed to them on a silver platter. However, the two sisters couldn’t be any more different, the older sister was on the quieter end of the spectrum, interested in arts, while Rachel was carefree and active, with an interest in astrology and stars and everything about space. Eventually, Lara left for Italy to study architecture, and Rachel got into NYU, majoring in astrophysics. 

Although she loved studying it, it didn’t take her long to realize that she hated working in it, quitting six months into her very first job and settling for being a yoga instructor.

The day of her 24th birthday was when things started getting unexplianably weird. She started getting weird visions while she’s sleeping, some more vivid than others, and only one coming true. Of course, she doesn’t put too much thought into any of them - thinks she’s just dreaming and it’s all deja vu, especially when she’s always been a dreamy person, head in the sky and all that.

Rachel’s a very easy going person. You hardly see her upset or stressed about things, because she doesn’t really think anything is worth getting stressed about and she deflects anything potentially stressful to her. She’s had a fascination with stars and the galaxy from a very young age, and a lot of times you find her in observatories just stargazing. She can tell you all about the legends and the constellations with a passion, but she can also tell you the logical, real facts. She’s talkative, can sometimes ramble without realizing and thinks out loud more often than not.

“THAT CAN BE ARRANGED FOR SURE!” she reassures the blond. “I have a few clients who prefer to take private yoga lessons.” Most of them hate the idea of being in a big class and prefer to have the full attention of the instructor. She laughs lightly, waving her hand. “Nonsense. There’s no embarrassment. You’re learning, so. How’s your availability?”

“Is this where the ferry station is?” Nellie asked. Most often, if she needed to cross over water… she’d just swim. However, she had just gotten a new dress from a particular shop or rather, she ran out the store, causing an alarm to go off and didn’t want it to get wet. “I don’t see a ticket station. Where is it? Is there some sort of… giant sign I’m supposed to look for?”

SHE’S HEADED TO STATEN ISLAND for a private yoga session. She doesn’t mind the trip, mainly because she enjoys the company of her client, who’s become a friend to her over the months. “Yes, you’re at the station,” she informs the other with a kind smile. “Oh, it’s just over there.” She points. “You see that line? That’s where it is. I was lost the first time, too.”

“ IS IT ? ”   he chuckles, wondering if she’s new to town or something. there’s nothing about a new york minute that screams RELAXATION. then again, maybe a yogi would think differently.   “ yeah ? ”   harry’s smile widens, looking down at her.   “ do you do private lessons ? ”

“I BELIEVE SO! I mean, it has everything, it’s like... a full package of things,” she clarifies, not even sure if she’s making sense to him. “I do, yes! Some people would rather get private lessons than be in a big class with other people. They say they can benefit better that way. Is that what you prefer?”

there’s a warm smile as she puts hands to hips and the drinks come around. “okay,” chace starts, picking up the shot glass and looking over at her admiringly, because not too many people went for his antics. whether or not it would affect them poorly wasn’t clear yet and it’s the last thing on his mind as he drops the shot into the beer.

RACHEL’S EXCITED TO TRY SOMETHING NEW. She patiently waits for the bartender to bring over their drinks, clapping her hands together when it’s time. She doesn’t care about what comes next. She’s here to have fun with a friend, so it’s all good. She follows suit and takes the glass, grinning to Chace. “Let’s go!” As told, she drinks the beer as fast as she could. She struggles to do so, but pushes till she can’t anymore, laughing. “This is disgusting, Chace!”

She makes a mental note of the name and location of the place so she can google it for a detailed location. “You’ve got a deal. Expect me to pass by soon! I may just found myself a new tailor.”

“I’m a busy woman, I think I know what’s a waste of time when I see it.” And even the sound of it, seemed like it. She doesn’t get it and she doubts she will even if she jumps over her shadow and tries it. She’s her own boss, she’ll try something if she wants to - not because some over eggcentric person recommends it because they sell it or participate in it themselves. “You told me I look like SHIT so I suppose you can answer that question yourself.” She didn’t say it like that but Dylan will put it like that either way. “I don’t even remember.”

“TOO BUSY TO MAKE SOME TIME TO YOURSELF AND TRY SOMETHING NEW?” she inquiries, brows furrowing slowly. She understands having too much to do, but she also believes people must make some time to themselves. Surely the brunette has forty-five minutes that she can use for hobbies or self-care. She gasps at her word usage. “I didn’t say that,” she defends lightly, hating that’s how the other comprehended it. “Well, then, there’s the issue!”

“I WOULDN’T SAY TROUBLE, I’ve just been having odd dreams,” she clarifies, following the other towards the shelves. How else would she describe dreaming about people she didn’t know? Her dreams were weirdly vivid, too. She’s never had dreams as vivid as that. “Not really. Nothing in my personal or professional life, so there’s no reason to bring about these dreams.”

“I owe yow, I really do.” He mused, chuckling as he noticed her cheeky grin on her lips. He was glad she was understanding about it all. “O’Riley’s Tavern… it’s really nice, I enjoy. It’s a great atmosphere.” Explaining as he leaned against the wall, head tilting towards her. “I already am overwhelmed, how long do you think before I drop out?” He teases. “Nothing new? I don’t believe that, when it comes to the one and only Rachel Nazeri… there’s always something new.” 

“YOU REALLY DO,” she repeats for fun. “I’m patient, but not too patient.” Now that’s a semi lie, she’s patient and understanding when it comes to things like this. Not patient with other things, mostly things that only directly concern her, not involving other people. “Oh, I’ve never been there. Now I have the perfect reason to check it out! You’ll be seeing me soon.” She claps her hands together in excitement. “It’s okay to be overwhelmed. It’s a lot of new things at once, but you got this. You just need to adapt and get used to it all.” She laughs lightly, shrugging. “Maybe I’m growing lame and boring.” She pouts. “Still working as a yoga instructor. No one in my life. Still like to try new things and talk a lot. The same old Rachel.”

     THE IDEA SOUNDS ENTICING, and becca doesn’t seem the harm in it. “okay,” she agrees with an enthusiastic nod. there’s really no harm in yoga. “oh, you do not want to work out with me. i’m no fun and would want to quit within ten minutes.” becca can’t even remember the last time she worked out for real. she doesn’t want to subject the other to that. “i’m a seamstress, so i work at an alteration shop.” it’s certainly nothing glamorous, but she has fun, and really, that’s all that matters to her. becca lets out a laugh, knowing exactly where the other one is coming from. “so many people don’t get it, but tea is such an important part of my day.” 

RACHEL GRINS, excited at the idea that not only she convinced someone, but she also seems to have made a new friend. Maybe they’re not yet friends, but as far as she’s concerned, they are. Besides, they’ll be going to workout together - that’s something friends do together! “I’m sure that’s not true. We’ll enjoy it. And I won’t let you quit!” she reassures her. “Oh? Where? The shop I take my clothes to close down like last week, I’ve been on the search for a better place.” What impeccable timing! “The most important, if you ask me.”

THE HARDEST PART ABOUT SIMONE’S JOB was trying to differentiate between the posers or not. some people were there with genuine interests that her occult books may be a help in—and some people wanted to find looks that had simple  ‘ dreams where all your teeth fall out means you’re struggling with stress. ’   eyes following the woman to the stack she had suggested, simone tries to gouge which she is.   “ it’s a pretty broad topic, ”   she tells her.   “ anything in particular you’re looking for ? ”

“I CAN IMAGINE. I’m not sure where to really start with it. I tried to do that online, but the multitude of resources was kinda overwhelming. Especially when I’m not completely sure what’s accurate and what’s not,” she clarifies, sighing lightly. “Their origin. Uh - explanation, too, like why they happen, and maybe explanation of some dreams. I get that’s even broader, but it’s worth a try if there’s a good source out there.”

“WELL, NEW YORK IS THE RIGHT PLACE TO UNWIND!” She hasn’t been to too many places to make that statement with confidence, but she still does, because come on, its NYC! “In One World Plaza!” It also tends to be her favorite place, since she can stop by the observatory any time before or after work. “Oh? Wow, I’d love to have you there. You’ll like it.”

meekly, he musters up another fake smile with a bit of sincerity behind it and he nods, knowing rachel was always there for him. “neither of us have the time right now, but i will take you up on it, if we wind up stumbling around.” he drums hands on the bar listening and then he gives her a small nod, “your friend isn’t completely wrong, it’s not for the faint of heart but you’ll hardly taste it if we’re chugging it - two irish car bombs,” he said happily to the bartender who went off to start them immediately.

“I’LL HOLD YOU TO IT.” Her tone is light and gentle, because of course he’s under no obligation to come to her. She just wants him to know she’s here, if he ever needs it. “Well, I’m no faint of heart!” She places her hands on her hips in an act of strength. She likes to think she’s invincible, with the silliest and big things. A disgusting drink is hardly the end of the world. “Okay, chug, it is.” She claps her hands in excitement.

THIS CUSTOMER CAN SURE TALK A LOT, simone thinks, chugging the rest of the coffee in her cup as she attempts to follow along with the stream of consciousness. putting dog the mug, her fingers move to rub her temple slowly. it’s not her fault, really. simone was just hungover, from a one-woman party of drinking alone last night. the usual.   “ we have a lot of books about that, ”   she tells her, nodding towards the stacks.   “ try the third aisle, second shelf on the left… bottom shelf, maybe ? ”   she didn’t have the entire store memorized, but it was close.   “ are you looking for more the biological explanation of them, or the metaphysical one ? ”

“AMAZING! I’ll check the aisle and see what I can find,” she says, already excited and hopeful she’s one step close to potentially finding answers. She didn’t give it much thought at first, but then she started dreaming of people she didn’t know. What made it weirder was when one dream came true. Naturally, it threw her off, but that’s just odd, right? Obviously, at this stage, Rachel’s more in between being dismissive and curious. “Uh, both. The more, the merrier and whatever I can find I’ll read. They’re an interesting topic, right? I’ve never been that interested, but my interest has peaked and I found them so peculiar.” Okay, Rachel, enough. From a perspective of someone who’s studied science, there is nothing biological about this but reading about it might clear things up, but from a perspective of someone who’s head is always in the clouds and likes to read about different myths and legends and stories, the metaphysical explanation might come in handy, too. Honestly, she has no idea where to start with this, but that seems like the first step.

taken aback to her question chace looks around a momemt like everyone could hear what they were talking about over the music. he wondered was it so obvious, how much he held in. with a glance back to her, he nodded once, admitting the secret to her because by the end of the night they’d both be to messed up to remember.

he makes a face to her that is neither condescending or shaming, but happy to explain the drink to her as it was one of his favorites. “oh my gosh, okay, so, it’s a half pint of guiness beer and a shot of baileys irish creme, you just drop the shot in beer and drink it fast ”

RACHEL’S BROWS FURROW AT THE MALE’S CONFESSION. For someone who views life through rose-colored glasses, Chace’s words are concerning, because she’ll naturally wonder what’s stressing him and out and she’ll want to help. “You know you can talk to me, right? I want to see a real Chace smile!” she says sincerely, smiling softly. She wants him to know she’s around, but also she doesn’t want to pressure him in any way, hence lightening up the mood a little bit. “I’ve never tried Guinness beer, my friend back in college said it’s disgusting,” she shares. “Though, I’m down to trying it!” Always one up for trying out new things.

GOOD QUESTION. “You don’t look like it!” she says with a smile, hoping she gets away with it, because by wanting to save herself, she had buried herself in a deeper one. “Are you uptight?” she wonders. He’s teasing and confusing her. “I am, yes! I’ve been one for a few years now.”

A SINGLE EYEBROW raised at the woman’s ramblings turning more and more into an infomercial before her very eyes. If the pitch didn’t start off with what it was about, Sian could’ve sworn the ferver at which the woman spoke would’ve been something straight out of cultist behavior. “If I say yes to this, can we change the topic?” Sian deadpans. “And how does one find the ‘proper’ instructor?”

RACHEL GRINS, POINTING AT HER. “I see what you’re doing here... Sorry, I didn’t catch your name. How rude of me. I’m Rachel!” She does this a lot, randomly change subjects as soon as she thinks about something else. “Oh, I’m an instructor - a proper one! But, where I teach there are also a lot of other good ones, too.”
