TOPIC OUTLINE
There is not one single definition of bullying as everyone has a different idea of what it is. According to the Oxford American Dictionary, a bully is a person who uses strength or power to harm or intimidate those who are weaker.
In a large study to find out how many kids are a victim to bullying, it has been uncovered that around 49% of children throughout the 4th - 12th grade have experienced some sort of bullying in the past month, whilst 30.8% admitted to bullying someone.
To define bullying as a frequent occurrence, one child must be a victim to the same bully at least twice in the same month. Only 20-30% of adults are actually notified that this bullying has occurred.
Suicide has become the third most leading cause of death surrounding youths, around 4,400 deaths per year and for every suicide executed there is another 100 attempted, according to the CDC. Studies at Yale have shown that victims of bullying are 2 - 9 times more prone to take their own life than others.
ABC news reported that 160,000 children risk their education and stay home because of the fear of bullying in school grounds and this has to stop.
MISSION STATEMENT
I am studying the issue of bullying because I want to find out how the effects of bullying can impact a students life and progress in school, so that I can not only raise awareness to my peers about the aftermath that bullying causes, but propose solutions that will hopefully reduce the issue and the consequences that the victim suffers.
