Jane Austen Monster Rewrites
After seeing Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, I was interested in if there were other monster rewrites of Jane Austen’s famous novels. There are a lot! I plan on reading some of them because no I can’t get enough of Jane Austen. “Make it New!”-Ezra Pound Even now people are making a new generation of Jane Austen readers and possibly make people want to read the original novel!
Here is a link to a list of Monster rewrites

Here is a map of Bath.
Her start was perceptible only to herself; but she instantly felt that she was the greatest simpleton in the world, the most unaccountable and absurd!
(Austen 123)
I find Anne Elliot is the most interesting Jane Austen character because we see her through her thoughts, but can understand her through psychology. I feel that she shows signs of somatic responses, but she is telling herself to stop losing herself to her emotions and bringing herself back from her emotional turmoil. Putting her emotions “back in the box.”
A degree of unexpected cordiality, however, in the welcome she received, did her good. Her father and sister were glad to see her, for the sake of shewing her the house and furniture, and met her with kindness. Her making a fourth, when they sat down to dinner, was noticed as an advantage.
(Austen 96)
I wonder why her family is only now being friendly towards Anne. I feel that if I was in this situation, I would be a deer in headlights and wait for something bad to happen.
“Stupid men are the only ones worth knowing, after all.” — Pride and Prejudice (V.2, Ch. V) by Jane Austen (Norton Critical Edition, P. 103)
So so so true because they are the only ones who have character in anything and everything they do.
I found a blog called “Jane Austen’s World” about “Jane Austen and Music”, stating that one of Jane Austen’s favorite composers was Ignaz Pleyel. So here’s a sonatina by one of her favorite composers. I wanted to know what her favorite composers were and how she would play or listen to her favorite works.
Anne hoped she had outlived the age of blushing; but the age of emotion she certainly had not.
(Austen 36)
I find this funny because I don’t think anyone outlives blushing. :P
Mary had acquired a little artificial importance, by becoming Mrs. Charles Musgrove; but Anne, with an elegance of mind and sweetness of character, which must have placed her high with many people of real understanding, was nobody with either father or sister: her word had no weight; her convenience was always to give way;-she was only Anne.
(Austen 5)
Wow. Just Wow. A girl who is ignored and snubbed by everyone.
This is the only video I could find on side saddle riding. This is a great video of seeing the transformation of the side saddle to the Victorian period. I couldn’t find a video on Regency riding, but she explains side saddle history.
This would be the pace Jane Austen (WOMEN) riders would be riding on horseback side saddle.
Imagine riding a horse like that! I think this picture is romantic because there is no way a woman could keep her balance on a horse, while cantering. According to my research, women only walked and trotted while on horseback.
Emma denied none of it aloud, and agreed to none of it in private.
(Austen 244)
Brother and sister! no, indeed.
(Austen, 228)
I really like this quote because Mr. Knightley is leaving a clue that he and Emma are not like brother and sister but future courting material.
(hint hint) :P
Twitter Assignment
I chose my quote from Emma because it truly shows the signs of the relationship between Mr. Knightley and Emma. They are both sassy towards each other in a playful manner. Mr. Knightley is the only person who challenges Emma and matches her sassiness. Trying to translate Jane Austen to less than 140 characters on Twitter was definitely a challenge because I had to rearrange and strategize what to do. There’s so much content in that paragraph that I had to choose my favorite part which was Mr. Knightley’s sassy reply to Emma’s “matchmaking skills.”
I learned about others tweets that they had an easier time translating Jane Austen, while I struggled greatly because rewording has never been my strong suit. I really enjoyed everybody’s tweets because some people wrote really funny rewrites of Austen.
I do not require you to adopt all my suspicions, though you make so noble a profession of doing it, but I honestly tell you what they are.
