Not sure if there are any Wicked fans on here but I was taking a break from writing essays and I decided I wanted to listen to a few tracks from the musical. “Popular” came on and I immediately linked it back to Emma. Glinda is pretty much another version of Emma! Here is a map of Bath I found on the Jane Austen Society of North America web page! I thought it was really interesting that the Elliots move to Bath and not London. Like Prof Rehn was saying, it was much easier to appear important in Bath than in London.

“I went only to the post-office,” said she, “and reached home before the rain was much. It is my daily errand. I always fetch the letters when I am here,”

This is Jane talking about her daily runs to the post office. She goes onto to explain that she does not await letters of business but letters of friendship. As the novel progresses we learn that the letters are actually from Frank Churchill.

“It was, indeed, so odd; Harriet’s behavior was so extremely odd, that Emma did not know how to understand it. Her character appeared absolutely changed,”

The repetition of the word “odd” gives away that it is not the narrator speaking but that it is Emma’s voice.

An example of Regency period music, played on a harp. I wonder how common harps and other instruments were in this time period. Jane Austen’s works often make mention of pianos, and young ladies are often seen showing off their accomplishments by playing piano. Were other instruments as ubiquitous?

Another question to think about: Were there certain instruments tied to specific locations? I've been working on the playlist for THE BALL and I can't help but notice the differences in instrumentation in the music used for English Country dancing vs instrumentation in music used for Contra dancing.

“Lady Rusell, indeed, had scarcely any influence with Elizabeth, and seemed to love her, rather because she would love her, than because Elizabeth deserved it,”- Persuasion by Jane Austen Chapter II page 13

This quote shows how Lady Russell tries to be pleasant to Elizabeth but finds it a bit harder to do so, especially in comparison to Anne.

For the Emma twitter adaptation game I chose to  adapt “She was sorry, but could not repent,” from Volume 1 Chapter 9. Here’ s link to the full quote: http://goo.gl/ispOvz @nnarvaez16

My adaptation of this quote was pretty simple, “She was sorry but not really.” I feel as if this adaptation not only covers this specific quote but a lot of Emma’s actions. Especially when she “confesses” that she’s done wrong in try to set Harriet up with Mr. Elton but she already begins to think of other people she could pair her up with. A lot of Emma’s character depends on her tendency to apologize but not really change. 

I loved reading through other student’s adaptiations. They were insightful and I learned that while Austen’s prose can be complex at times it really throws hard punches at society’s norms. I also enjoyed reading how her prose can also be adapted using contemporary slang!
