AUSTRALIA - Today, at the Australian Open womens semi-final, there was a Serena Williams “fan” in the crowd wearing blackface. Not only was she allowed into the venue, but her face was broadcast on national TV with none of the commentators calling her out.

And people say Australians aren’t racist *rolls eyes*

Why the fuck are not more people talking about this? Australians are racist and we have a giant history of being racist and ignoring it and pretending it’s a “joke so it’s okay”. It’s fucking disgusting. How on earth this girl was allowed in rod laver I have no idea, you’re not even allowed outside water bottles for fuck sake yet you’re allowed to have full black face? I don’t people fucking start with “it’s different here in Australia” because no it is fucking not, we have a MASSIVE history of racism, blackface and all manner of horrible things like this.

Hell remember a couple years ago when that dance group parodied Michael Jackson in full blackface and it was shown on national TV ?? And no one here gave a shit and it was all over American news channels but everyone here was like “nahh man it was just a joke”.

We are a nation that earlier this week celebrated colonisation and people on here wanna say we aren’t fucking polluted with racism?

Just so we’re clear, if Labor was at that Pacific Islands meeting they would have said the exact same thing as Abbott - “2 degrees not 1.5 degrees”, the difference between life and death for Pacific Islands - they just wouldn’t have added that joke at the end. Okay this is more of a question. Can black people be racist to non-black people of colour?

I’m of Indian heritage but live in a country with majority black people. My school is lik 95% black. I get made fun of a lot by black people, and they tell me to ‘go back to India’ even though I was born in this country.

I am a vegetarian and they always eat meat in front of me and push it towards my nose and say ‘you want some?’. We were watching a movie one day in class and someone was like 'oooh you must be upset this isn’t a indian movie’. I have a close friend of chinese descent who experiences the same sort of treatment, like black people calling him chink and saying he must eat dog and stuff.

I often hear a lot the black people can’t be racist, but is this true? I hate being Indian and I’ve wished to be black so many times growing up. I try to take these things as a joke but some people do it just to be cruel and I get hurt by it. My step-dad (who I absolutely love) is black so I thought this would help me fit in more but it really hasn’t.

I’ve experienced racism by white people before when I went abroad, and I can say that it hurts, but coming from my home country from fellow poc just feels worse. I don’t know any more. I know how much black people have suffered abroad in America and Europe and I feel terrible when I hear about this. I love black people, and some of the nicest people I have met are black but these other ones at my school are really mean. I just wish I wasn’t me.

I’ve read several times that black people can’t be racist, but why am I hurt by their words and actions? What do I do? I’ve tried to make myself look black by getting more tanned and I even tried making my hair into dreadlocks but I stopped when I realised this was cultural appropriation. I really just wanted to fit in but I’m lost.

I don’t want to seem like I feel my suffering is worse than what black people went through because I really don’t mean that I promise. I know that slavery was terrible and my suffering is nothing compared to what they went through but I just want to cry because I don’t know. I don’t know if my feelings are valid and I’m just really confused.

Australia is known for being multicultural. We should be happy that we have people from other nationalities representing our country and doing well.

I’m sure Nick has his issues but he’s still young. Give the guy a break I’m sure Dawn Fraser wasn’t so perfect when she started.

What’s sad is that she probably won’t get the backlash she deserves for her disgusting comment. Any bet we won’t see this on our news. White Privilege for ya.

Samantha Armytage on Australia’s morning show Sunrise makes racist remarks

Okay so I’ve seen this story floating around & I get it from both sides. I really do. You could say people are over reacting and that she didn’t mean it’ but accident or not saying someone someone who has lighter skin compared to someone who doesn’t implies racial superiority.  

Its bad enough most of all our Aussie presenters on TV are white and don’t represent our multicultural country realistically. To validate white is better is just terrible. Growing up I never saw any other nationalities on Australian TV besides white. Nothings changed all these years later and we’re still faced with messages through the media like this. 

Defend it all you want but even her co cost was like WTF did you just say you idiot face seconds after she said it. 

If you’re used to having white privilege you probably don’t understand what the fuss is about and are probably one of those people in the comment section going ‘you’re overreacting ’

The photo was published in February but has only gained attention now after journalism student Ahmed Yussufon Sunday publicly exposed Ingerson's picture on Twitter, expressing deep disappointment.

Ingerson responded saying, "It was an African costume party," accompanied by the hashtag "#notracistatall".

Yussuf responded with: “But that’s the thing, costume party. As being black is a costume to put on. We are not props.”

Yussuf, who is studying at LaTrobe University, previously worked as an intern at the same media organisation as Ingerson. Fairfax media reported that Yussuf initially thought to keep the incident quiet in case it would jeopardise future opportunities. But ultimately he considered it was in the public's interest to expose it.

He added that he had since explained the offense behind blackface to Ingerson.

Australia’s online community has condemned the post on the social media platform.

One person going by the handle @gr33nrust wrote “wait, this is 2015 and you didn’t realize blackface would be offensive?”

The ‘blackface’ issue has come up frequently in recent times with Australia's fair share of personalities becoming embroiled.

Up-and-coming model Samantha Robinson, 18, last year posted a photo of herself with the caption “happy birfday Lilly Wayne” using the “Westside” rap hand gesture sitting next to a man in blackface posing as American rap artist Lil Wayne.

Robinson responded to the outrage by saying, “If painting yourself black is racist against black people, then painting yourself blue is racist against Avatars”.

NITV has contacted Ingerson via Twitter and is awaiting a response.

"Casual" racism is endemic in New Zealand

NEW ZEALAND - “Casual” racism is endemic in New Zealand - it’s so normal that speaking up about it makes you the object of ridicule and bullying. There have been so many times when I’ve spoken up about a racist “joke”, and me being “sensitive” and “PC” has become the running joke of the evening. In the South Island racial diversity is so appalling that I’ve met people who’ve spent their whole life being the only poc in their social group who’ve embraced racism as a way to “fit in”, who defend racism by saying “well if I don’t find it offensive then it’s not offensive”.

Even if people don’t make fun of you to your face about it, they assume that you must have at least some of the same racial biases. One time I was shocked to hear a pretty progressive friend of mine justifying racial profiling; he tried to point out that it’s not always bad because racial profiling also includes “when you cross the street to avoid Maori guys” and I became fucking hysterical at that. He was visibly shocked that I DON’T do this - he couldn’t believe it. He’s a huge weight-lifter and I’m a tiny girl, so he assumed that I’d have the same irrational fear of Maori men. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry and I couldn’t even look at him after that.
