Every time I think I'm out of tears, more keep coming...This photo is where everything started for me, Batman. In hindsight, it's very fitting that my official introduction to Prince was through one my favorite child hood movies. From there the more I discovered his back catalogue the more I was drawn to his genius and brilliance. Whenever I tell someone my favorite all time artist is Prince, two reactions always happen. 1st) I either get a surprised or bewildered look, and 2nd) the other person immediately asks me why? My answer is the same reason hearing of his passing today hurts so much. For me Prince was more than just a musical savant and once in a lifetime artist. Yes, his music was funky, his style was unmatched, his skills untouchable...it was more than just the music for me. At a time when I truly discovered Prince's back catalogue I was just entering adolescence. Prince made me feel good about myself for being the straight As, quirky, nerdy, black kid who liked to read goosebumps books, comics, be into astronomy, dress funny, and listen to music other than just rap like the rest of my friends at the time. He made me feel comfortable being in my own skin and just being myself. He taught me how to talk to girls I liked in my classes, he taught me my swagger. He made me feel comfortable being the short black kid in school and not the tall varsity athlete. There's so much more to Prince for me than just the music, and for that I'm forever grateful. To this day my favorite concert memory ever is still my brother John and I dressing as Morris and Jerome to attend the Musicology Tour show here in SA back in 04. I'm thankful I was able to see my favorite artist ever live. Thank you for everything, #Prince. I'll see you in Paradise. 💜
