Hey! I saw your posts about how Fates totally screwed over Ike's character. Although I haven't actually gotten the Ike character yet (the amiibo is still in his box, haha), I've seen screenshots of what you're referring to, and yes it's awful. Do you think his portrayal in Awakening was a little more true to the real deal? And if it was, how did it get so bad in Fates???

yeah it’s pretty disheartening, hopefully once you get past the initial conversations you’ll still be able to enjoy his inclusion in the game!

from what i remember of awakening ike they got him pretty spot on, in particular i was impressed with how they managed to capture his trademark snark

I have no idea what’s happened with fates. My best guess is that whoever wrote him was only familiar with priam and assumed ike was very similar (he’s Not).

I'm not sure if you've already written a separate post about this, but I'd be interested to hear what you thought they messed up most with Ike in Fates.

this is something i’ve ranted extensively about on twitter but, i think it’s high time i posted about it here too. strap yourselves in, we’re talking about tumblr user regalsword’s Pet Hate™: mischaracterising ike

fates ike has exactly one character trait: he loves to pick fights with strong enemies. When you summon an amiibo unit to your castle, corrin has a few conversations with them before you’re able to battle and recruit them. Ike’s first conversation is mostly just introductions, and is fine. It’s from the second conversation onward that things start to get bad. He talks about his motive for fighting, which is now apparently seeking out and battling strong foes for the thrill of the fight itself (which he remarks as “not exactly the most noble of motivations”. no, it isn’t). As someone who knows ike’s character like the back of my hand, this is all complete news to me.

One particularly egregious exchange involves him asking you whether you strive for peace or revel in conflict, should you choose the former he acts as though that’s not the choice he would have made, suggesting you shouldn’t “long for battle” the way he supposedly seems to now. Another has him talking wistfully about the constant battles in the world he came from, and how much he misses them.

Once you defeat and recruit him, corrin jokes that ike only joined them for the opportunity to fight tough enemies, which ike then sheepishly admits to be true. ugh.

all of this is so out of character and wrong on so many levels

ike is a character motivated by duty, not something as selfish as the thrill of combat. Duty to his employer, duty to his friends and most important of all: duty to his father and living up to his expectations. While he enjoys sparring and friendly contests of strength, he has no love of battle and avoids conflict whenever possible. This is the guy who at the end of the game, grumbles that he’s had enough of battles to last a lifetime. Remember when a black dragon joined the enemy side and his reaction was “are u fuckin kidding me” not “aww yeah another worthy foe to fight!”. the only time he seems to show any kind of desire for conflict is with the black knight, and even then that’s for deeply personal reasons. If you’re going to reduce a character to one personality trait, then at least make sure it’s a trait they actually have?

i’m just… very confused as to how they managed to screw up so badly with ike. It’s implied that these are the smash bros incarnations of the characters, but that doesn’t explain why the other amiibo units were faithful to their original characterisations (marth is a little iffy, but nowhere near ike’s level of ooc) while ike’s is almost a complete fabrication. I’d expect this kind of mischaracterisation in smash bros fanfiction but not a canon fire emblem game. It’s a real kick in the gut after being excited about his inclusion in the game for so long, especially when he was exclusive extra content that i had to shell out a premium for.

ike is such a commonly mischaracterised character as it is, so it’s infuriating to see intsys themselves adding fuel to the fire. I only hope next time they decide to include him in a game they leave the writing to somebody who can show they actually know anything about his games at all.

But idk, Ike is very duty-oriented but if you check his convos with characters like Lethe and Stefan he does seek to improve his sword skills, perhaps even suggesting he enjoys seeking different opponents for the experience. (True enough, this probably comes from his conflict with the Black Knight and wanting to live up to his father’s name).

I do agree the focus is wrong in the amiibo version, but as you said it is probably because the Ike from SSB is VERY different from the Ike in the games who is much more responsible and even sassy. Fates kinda turned him into Ephraim tho, and that’s weird. Also Ike doesn’t have the reverse classism portrayed in Fates, or at least it is a little more subtle.

I think it’s important to distinguish between what ike does to improve his skills and get stronger (i.e. to meet his father’s expectations) and the way he treats foes on the battlefield because they’re very different.

Ike’s conversations with stefan and lethe don’t suggest he seeks strong foes to gain experience, they’re merely more of the same training he’s been doing to hone his skills from the beginning. Look at the way ike interacts with most strong enemies in the game (bosses and the like). In almost every case, he goes out of his way to give them a chance to stand down or step aside. This habit reaches its peak with micaiah, where he ends up basically begging hands and knees for her to stop so they don’t have to fight. This is not the behaviour of a man who prowls the battlefield looking for tough enemies to test his skills. Ike takes the life and death nature of the battlefield very seriously; fighting is a means to an end, not the end itself.

And after reading the japanese version of the pre-recruitment convo, the “this is ssb ike” argument doesn’t hold water. The conversations i referred to are explicity in the context of his time as a mercenary leader in the jp version. But more to the point this being a different version of ike doesn’t justify a drastic personality change, robin, marth and lucina are all true to their original characterisations. It’s especially noteworthy in lucina’s case, because her smash portrayal was widely criticised for being overly arrogant and aggresive, yet she returns to her more humble fire emblem characterisation in fates.

(and yeah it’s interesting you bring up ephraim because fandom has a habit of treating him, hector and ike as interchangeable. guess intsys are doing that now too :\)

but like i said before, there’s no excuses

Ike’s Fates voice sounds somewhere between brooding teenager, world-weary veteran, and sassy gay friend and it still manages not to sound right for him at all. I thought his voice in Smash Bros was perfect. I’m incredulous that it’s the same actor.

“No, no! That’s not it at all!” Meta knight quickly stammers out. “Of course I’m having fun; I’d love to hear all of you sing!”

He needs to be careful; he has a tendency to emote a bit too much around his friends.

Now worried that he was bothering his friend, Toon Link nodded at Meta Knight, unsure exactly of how to respond. He looked over at Marth, then at Ike, then back at Marth, eyebrows raised, unsure exactly of what to do next, waiting for a cue from either of them.

“Well thank goodness for that,” Marth teased. His smug smile dropped like a rock. “I didn’t burn the cake!” he protested. Well actually he couldn’t tell. He assumed that since the thing pulled apart so easily that it was fine. “And there is no poison.” Though he was starting to think it wasn’t a bad idea. He jests.

At Meta Knight’s insistence, which was very strange, Marth frowned. He couldn’t work out exactly what the problem was. He looked at the cake and then at the gifts. The only thing he could think might be a problem for the small knight was that he might have to remove his mask in order to eat. But the three had all seen his face before. Hadn’t they?

He sighed quietly and glanced at Ike. Opening his mouth to sing his friend happy birthday, he expected the mercenary to take the opportunity to out-sing him.

Ike, of course, joined into the singing. He couldn’t pass up, especially since it meant that the cake would be served faster that way. Although, he wasn’t going to since louder than Marth. The princess could be the one to carry the tune and mess up, not him...Or maybe Toon Link was good at singing?

The mercenary glanced down at Meta Knight, curious on if something was still bothering him.

Meta knight sighs, hoping that the three of them aren’t going to shout at the top of their lungs.

…And then realizes something that is very very bad.

He keeps his mouth shut in the hopes it will go unnoticed.

Toon Link started to notice something…off about Meta Knight. Aren’t people normally more excited for their birthdays? Meta Knight seemed more nervous.

“…Are you not having fun, Meta Knight?”

“Giving you matches is an even worse idea than allowing me to light the candles,” Marth said with an irritable huff. Oh good grief. Right. The singing. “Something tells me you are dying to be the one to start us off,” he said with a smirk.

He had been so busy bickering with his fellow blue-haired friend that Toon’s comment threw him off. The prince looked at the knight. “Everything alright?” he asked. He smiled and, in attempts to cheer him up, added, “Would you rather Ike didn’t sing?”

Marth’s sneering remark jabbed through Ike like a spear. “I wasn’t going to even sing, anyway!” Ike snapped, lying. He glared daggers at Marth before turning his attention back to Meta Knight. The mercenary scanned the batamon’s expression, it was difficult to make out from behind his mask, but his eyes reflecting the flickering candles could easily express that something had come up that was bothering him. “Could it be the cake? Maybe it’s too burnt and the princess is planning on poisoning us.” He remarked, getting back at the king, but clearly not helping the situation.

“No, it’s fine–…Ah, I had a lot of fights today.” Meta knight is content to maintain a record of placing second or higher 2/3 of the time. If he can up that to 75% of the time he will, but his current stats aren’t bad at all.

Meta knight sighs at Ike’s proposal that they need as many candles as he is years old, sitting down on the couch and preparing to be bombarded with more chatter.

He’d sit at the table but his head is kind of reeling.

Toon Link pulled himself up into a seat, dangling and kicking his legs as he sat cheerily at the table. A bit oblivious to Meta Knight’s distress, Toon Link turned to him and asked yet another question.

“So, did we really surprise you with this? We wanted to make a fun day for you!”

Marth laughed lightly at Ike’s proposal. “Don’t be mean, Ike,” he said with a grin. “We don’t have enough candles for that.”

After recomposing himself he continued setting the candles up, still chuckling quietly. He expected Meta Knight to lightly punch him in the leg or something but now he had a match in one hand. He struck the side of the box a few times, struggling to get the match to ignite without burning his fingers off. The match lit up with a loud ‘FSHHHHH’ and Marth jumped slightly at the sudden burst of flame. He lit the candles with the match until it got too close for comfort, meaning that he had barely got two or three candles lit. He shook the match frantically and dropped the smoking stick onto the table in mild panic. He lit the remaining candles with those that had been lit. “There,” he said once he was finished.

“You should have let me light those.” Ike grumbled, glaring at Marth’s incompetence. He sighed and clapped his hands together. “Alright, who’s going to start us off with singing?” He asked, glancing about at the two other victims.

“Hmm? Oh– er, yes,” he nods at Ike’s question.

Meta knight turns his head every which way to keep up with the fact that he’s being given things. Oh, and cake? Well, yes, of course he’ll eat cake; he must if they worked hard on it.

He sighs.

It’s going to be one of those days, isn’t it?

Toon Link stood near the cake at the table, his head high enough for the cake to be eye level with him. Either this was a tall table, or Toon Link was shorter than he thought.

“What kind of cake is it, Marth?” He asked, trying to pull himself higher. He looked back down at Meta Knight. “..I hope we didn’t scare you with our surprise, Meta Knight!” he chimed.

“It’s just a simple chocolate cake,” Marth admitted with a nervous smile. “Nothing terribly exciting, I’m afraid.” He didn’t mention that it had started coming apart as he was icing it… It would still taste fine.

He stood again to retrieve a few small candles and a box of matches. “I suppose there’s meant to be candles for you to blow out at the end of the song, right?” Having done this he set the candles in a circle and asked, “So what did you get up to today, Meta? Anything fun?”

Ike eyed the cake--Marth really outdid himself this time. It was a shock that the prince--er, king even knew how to bake in the first place, didn’t he have people for that? Shrugging off his own thoughts he watched as Marth grabbed the box of matches and arrange the candles. “Can I have one of those?” Ike asked, pointing to the match box, “Also, will there be enough candles? This is a big thing, after all. Every year counts.”

Meta knight is…certainly surprised.

“I…well…wow, this is impressive,” he stammers out.

They…made a birthday party for him?

“Oh, here you are Ike!” Toon Link beamed, handing the packet of balloons to Ike. He turned back to Meta Knight, all smiles and cheers.

“We wanted you to have a great day! Oh, and here’s your present from me!”

Toon Link handed him a small, messily wrapped box that could fit in a pocket. Toon Link clearly had trouble wrapping it, the ribbon knot coming loose. Inside was a small pin with the smash ball logo on it.

“You’ll have to look inside to see what it is, but I got it for you hoping it’d make you always feel more powerful!”

Marth chuckled at Meta Knight’s surprise. He seemed too stunned for words. Oh yes the gifts. He disappeared into his room and came out with his own small box. Last year he had given Meta Knight a tea strainer in the shape of a generic robot and his friend had loved it. This year’s present was much simpler but he knew Meta Knight would enjoy it just as much. The bag he brought out contained sweets: those special lollipops Meta Knight enjoyed as well as some chocolate and other hard candies. He set the bag on the coffee table and took a seat on the opposite end of the couch from Ike.

“We have cake too,” he said. He got up again to go fetch the mild mess of a chocolate cake. Retrieving a knife, he brought the plate with Meta Knight’s birthday cake through to where the others were sitting.
