At the 1980 Bammies, Dead Kennedys opened with California Über Alles in shirts spray-painted with an “S,” then pulled skinny ties forward to turn them into “$” signs before their only performance of Pull My Strings to satirize corporate new wave music.

Holiday in Cambodia by Dead Kennedys is a satire of performatively liberal college students who pretend to care about the struggles of minorities, but only in a culturally accepted, socially rewarded way.

It also critiques how that kind of performative politics collapses when removed from comfort. These same people likely couldn’t handle the reality of the conditions they claim to understand or empathize with.

The original song includes a racial slur in one line (“bragging how you know how the n***** feel cold, and the slum’s got so much soul…”), in the context of someone trying to impress the others with their knowledge of black culture and racial injustice.

Former frontman Jello Biafra has said he became increasingly uncomfortable with that lyric over time, and in current live performances (such as this one with his band Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine) he replaces it with “blacks.”

There is discourse about whether changing the lyric neuters the song or not. Some argue it softens the satire, others see it as a necessary change given the word’s harmful impact, and others still see the Dead Kennedys as a mere shock rock act and think it needs that word to work.

Personally, I think the altered version actually makes more sense for the satire, because the target is performative liberalism. Why would someone trying to appear socially conscious lean on explicit slurs in the first place?

I think in this cover version, Serj Tankian (who I am not a massive fan of in general, but still) put in the best word, as “brothers” conveys a sense of false familiarity and intimacy.

Gerald Casale said the video for Whip It was meant as a satire of the American West myth, but was misread as a BDSM thing. Given how common BDSM imagery was in Devo’s punk/industrial milieu, do you think they were meta-trolling?

I was never entirely happy with how Debbie's hair came out in the original scan of this. It was too flat. So I reworked it! Have more of Debbie in her gothy pubic access horror hostess days!

Originally gave Peter Platypus classic villain colors (green, purple, orange), but now testing an all-black look inspired by Boyd Rice. (To be clear: Peter is a villain from a satirical comic villain; I in no way support National Socialism and hate it is necessary to clarify this in the modern day.)

I was really excited to be one of the first people to ever go on the Universal Monsters dark ride. Can't believe it took them 100 years at Universal to have a park based on it! I'll share some of my adventures there in this post. Here I am in line next to Dracula's coffin.

Not sure who this is mean to be; it doesn't really look like either Helen Chandler (Mina Seward; Murray then Harker in the novel) or Frances Dade (Lucy Weston) to me. But her cracked photo was sitting just outside Dracula's coffin. Anyone want to take a guess? (Update: it's Christine from The Phantom of the Opera! I should have known, the silent Lon Chaney Phantom was the first horror film I ever saw..)

At the Universal Monsters park, they also had these really great vampire-themed steak house! You have familiars instead of waiters, like this unfortunate fellow in the first photo.

Some shots of the interior of the vampire restaurant at Universal Studios! I had an idea that maybe Nina (my goth goose character) works at a restaurant like this. Do you think that'd be a cool idea?

At Universal, they have a windmill that catches fire for real, just like in the 1931 Frankenstein movie! Hanging out here at night was the coolest experience, it felt like being in a horror movie.

Another one of me in line to go on the Universal Monster dark ride. The coolest thing about these rides is that even just standing in line is fun with all this artwork to look at. You can see a painting of Henry Frankenstein in the center (Victor in the novel).
