New for 2015: the green Amoeba bag. #amoebamusic
Nights like these at this time of year will only ever mean one thing to me. Happy Halloween everyone. Be safe and listen to Type O Negative. #typeonegative #halloween #petesteele
After enough years in this business it's inevitable that you end up interviewing some figures enough times that it feels more like you're continuing a conversation. Biff Byford is definitely one of those people for me, and it's his self-effacing humour and unswerving commitment to the cause that means it's always something to look forward to. He'll be talking about the first time he met Lemmy infiltrating the punk scene and 35 years of keeping it real on tonight's @metalhammeruk show on @teamrockofficial plus tunes by Praying Mantis, Cirith Ungol, Iron Maiden, and Saxon, obviously. #saxon #747 #nwobhm #metal #metalhammer #teamrock #maiden
A highlight of the week had to be chatting with Noel Fielding for the @metalhammeruk show on @teamrockofficial radio. A pleasure to have on, and a proper music fan. Turns out he grew up with ‘Floyd and Hawkwind and the first record he bought was Bomber by Motörhead. That's what I call quality parenting. #boosh #buzzcocks #metalhammer #teamrock #hawkwind #motorhead #pinkfloyd
And for those of you wondering how we created the cover of the new issue, here's a little behind the scenes look at it all. Yeah, we had some fun with it all. /DL
EPISODE 253: A NEW HOPE FOR HEAVY METAL
It's a weird thing working on mags - every single issue is like a distillation of the stress, excitement, snap-decisions and high-hopes you have in the white-knuckled run-up to deadline. The expanse of time between finishing an issue and actually seeing it on your desk makes them a bit like emotional time-capsules, and in the years I've been working on Metal Hammer I can say that each one is a different voyage. That said, issue 253 is very special to me.
As many of you will already know I'm not just a fanatical musical fan, but a proud geek as well. You might imagine, then, what it was like to get the blessing of Lucasfilm for the latest issue of Hammer, our 2014 preview issue. Expressions like 'labour of love' don't even cover it, and the pride I feel at seeing the physical manifestation of an issue that combines so many of my favourite things is pretty hard to summarise. If it weren't for the talents of an incredible team, the Metal Hammer staff, it just wouldn't be possible. I hope you'll take a moment to check it out, the force is strong in this one. /DL
The Devil and the Dark Lord. The Hammer Show meets Behemoth and conjures up all sorts of demons. /Wilding
2013 flew by, didn't it?
Despite mixed feelings about Christmas and its compatibility with heavy metal, it's a great time of the year to take stock of it all, and all I can say is, 'wow.' And, 'make mine a double.' Since our little heavy metal show began on June 17th with my head pounding from exhaustion from a charity cycle ride from London to Donington, Download weekend, and the not insignificant detail of the Metal Hammer Golden Gods the night before, it's been an absolute trip. So far, the Metal Magazine Show has done 130 shows, which equals about 390 hours of broadcast time or roughly 2,900 tracks. In that time we've interviewed Dez Fafara, Scott Ian, Joey Jordison, Avenged Sevenfold, Hacktivist, The Safety Fire, Cult Of Luna, Purson, Royal Thunder, Bill Bailey, Charlie Hunnam, Lars Ulrich, Skindred, Five Finger Death Punch, Orphaned Land, Municipal Waste, Gama Bomb, Accept, Monster Truck, John Campbell, Zakk Wylde, Mike Amott, Gojira, Hell, Russ Russell, Behemoth, Alan Day, Alex Lifeson, Man The Machetes, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Jonathan Davis, Ghost, Heart Of A Coward, Iced Earth, Ihsahn, Gene Simmons, Rod Smallwood, DJ Lazlow from Grand Theft Auto, Satyr, Trivium, Carcass, Brian Slagel, Dave Wyndorf, Clown from Slipknot, Tesseract, Lonelythebrave, Rob Caggiano, Pepper Keenan, and more, plus more debuts than you can shake a pair of studio headphones at. None of this would be possible without the help of some truly exceptional people at TeamRock Radio, but most significantly it just wouldn't get done without the the god-like talents of Philip Wilding, my producer, confidante, psychologist, and all-round personal hero through it all. The hours have been long but the toil has been so worthwhile, and none of it would be worth doing if it wasn't for our genuinely fantastic - and we should also add, very sexy listeners. Chin-chin, friends, you've been awesome. Here's to an even more marvelous year ahead, and possibly better-looking selfies. Stay safe, and stay metal. /DL
Now, you may have noticed that amid the Behemoth, the Napalm Death, the Malevolence, and the Pungent Stench we end each and every one of our shows with the theme tune from Sesame Street. That's because, boys and girls, it's the greatest piece of music ever written for the greatest TV show ever written. OK, there are others by bands like Maiden, Manowar, and Metallica but no song so reliably puts us in a good mood, or so resolutely sounds like happiness every time we hear it. It's also possible to crossfade it into absolutely every song we've thrown at it. Here's reason number 10,243 why we love it so. /DL
I'll never forget the first time I heard Primus - Tommy the Cat was on a boombox at some beach party and with the waves crashing and this bonfire going out of control this bizarre but peculiarly catchy sound completely captured my imagination. It was a next-level style of playing combined with a flagrant disregard for the status quo. Years later I'd become hooked on Zappa, but before then Les Claypool introduced me to an exuberantly wacky outlook that I've never shaken. Here's his latest project, and a new, weirder take on an old standard. /DL
So we had a great little chat with Skindred the other day, who are freshly returned from India and the far east. I remember interviewing Rob Trujillo back when he joined Metallica and I asked him who his favourite live band was - without missing a beat he said, 'Skindred - it has to be.' I couldn't agree with him more. Check out their new album Kill The Power in January. /DL
SO THE LORDS OF THE RIFF TOUR IS GO...
To celebrate it we had the Monster Truck boys on the show, they're one half of what's set to be an awesome co-headliner with Scorpion Child. Great guys. Check them out here. Oh, and here's what we played... /DL

Incredibly excited to see Monster Truck and Scorpion Child teaming up for an upcoming Classic Rock and Metal Hammer-sponsored tour. It's all happening next March. Full details here. In honour of that, we'll be asking you what the best riff of all time is on tonight's show from 9pm, and we'll have Monster Truck joining us in the last hour. It's on like kong! /DL
To not like Scorpions is illogical. /DL
Hell of a headache after the Classic Rock Magazine awards. Jimmy Page, Ozzy, Geezer, Tony Iommi, Saxon, Rick Wakeman (making wanking jokes), Alex Fucking Lifeson - the list goes on - it's an unreal night only made possible by true believers and some incredible support. Massive congratulations to Scott Rowley, Siân Llewellyn, John O'Sullivan and the whole team behind it. One of my favourite moments of the night was completely unexpected though - Blackberry Smoke at the aftershow - great guys, outstanding facial hair and they can play their instruments. /DL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgCDmJsuaos
A few months ago I was fortunate enough to interview genuinely inspiring group of guys out in Tel Aviv called Orphaned Land for a Metal Hammer feature. Seeing them here in London last night with Palestinian band (Khalas) in tow was inspiring. In Kobi's words, if they can share a tour bus, what's everyone else's problem? Food for thought anyway. Great band.

Yep, this exists. In fairness, you have to really try to be weird to really stand out in Japan so this probably deserves a round of applause. It can't be stranger than the time I went to see X Japan at the Saitama Super Arena who played half a set with a hologram of their long deceased guitarist. Somehow when you're over there it all makes sense, though. Fascinating country. On another front, here's a playlist from the other night - heavy metal, you say? /DL
