ok now that ive actually watched the movie here are my . uh. au thoughts because ive lost my wacom tablet pen and cant rlly draw anything right now

spoilers below the cut!!

for him, the backrooms are a distortion of the east india house where he spent 10 years mucking about

he first encounters them when he returns to england after a meeting with the eic board of directors for his conduct and administration in the east. his headaches get exponentially worse as his protracted war of words with farquhar and the other eic higher-ups drags on, meanwhile he's also trying to map out the backrooms

the still life of him becomes more distorted as his health and cognitive functions start to decline. the backrooms are deteriorating as he does, shifting passageways, narrowing and expanding and corrupting old rooms, copying and recreating items (woah! just like what he did as a clerk... probably copyediting loads of correspondences and memos) until they're barely recognisable

i'm not sure if there already exists a still life of him from the time he was working as a clerk, because he's probably a very different person by the time he returns 20 years later. but at that point i think the still life of him 20-30 years ago would be so badly degraded it'd be unrecognisable as a human... until he returns and it somehow "updates"?? or does a new still life of him just pop up...

in 1826, with the debts mounted onto him, he says fuck it and decides to venture further, beyond the mapped areas. the still life of him is just completely fucked from his decline. he probably feeds travers (who went into the backrooms to find him) to it at some point LOL

tbh yes i think he would "colonise" the space, using it as storage space, living and working in there to escape the mounting pressure from the debts and travers' disappearance, but it'll probably eventually start collapsing and swallowing him whole once he starts actively dying.

i'm assuming there's like, a secret-er committee that's already monitoring the eic backrooms and wondering why the hell it's gotten so crazy lately (it's him. again.)

or maybe his own still life just eats him idk but i feel like having the integrity of the backrooms to reflect his own mental and physical state is rlly interesting, the rooms clogging up with papers and books and his things, swelling up in size and amount of clutter until one day it just collapses and crushes him 😭

A Bibiliography Project - Gillespie

Little weekend project

Compared to other figures I've worked on, there really doesn't seem to be much on Gillespie. Addtionally, unlike biographers of Raffles, there seems to be a collective agreement amongst Gillespie biographers that he was indeed a great man. Whether or not that is true - I'll leave it up to you to decide.

Most of the printed material came from the John Bastin Collection, which is currently housed in the Central Library at Bugis.

While I've elected to only include Tim Hannigan's book Raffles and the British Invasion of Java in this bibilio, every Raffles biography will have something to say about Gillespie, and usually it's nothing good.

Special thanks to Desmond Rainey and the Comber Historical Society for answering some queries I had on Gillespie.

blogging abt a relatively niche historical figure is so funny. js reposting the same 3-4 portraits of him

to this day im still so baffled by what the hell he's wearing in this portrait

various theories i've come up with/heard:

described at one point as a "venetian costume" (why tho???)

possibly 16th century dress (WHY THO???)

portrait was taken to promote the History of Java or his knighthood???

i looked through the rest of the artist's (james lonsdale) catalogue and there isn't any such similar costuming in his other portraits

i'm partial to the 16th century dress theory because the high collar is extremely similar

so ??? either this fella has a really interesting sense of humour or he's like. let me do a little cosplay for my book promo and continental tour hyuk hyuk
