18. things you said when you were scared
“I’m okay.”
Yuto looked over his shoulder, lips tightening into a thin line. Shun inhaled, and flinched at the pain in his chest from the motion. Yuto’s eyes narrowed – he’d seen that. Shun bit back another reassurance.
“We need to get back out there.”
The ground shook from a distant blast, from the stagger of great robotic feet striking the ground. A haze of smoke filled the air outside the crack in the wall where Yuto sat, watching nervously.
“You can’t move right away. You need to stay here until emergency services finds us.”
“They won’t find us, Yuto. Not in this. And the others…the others out there need us.”
Yuto’s eyes didn’t change, but his hand tightened on the broken wall. His lips tightened.
“You’re going to get yourself killed.”
Shun let out a bark of a laugh, but it made his chest sting with pain, so he stopped.
“We all are. More of us if we don’t keep fighting back.”
He tried to stand up. The pain was blinding, but he needed to ignore it. Ruri was still out there, somewhere in that mess. His parents. Yuto’s mom. The school. The civilians who weren’t equipped to fight back.
Shun pulled himself to the side of the wall, and Yuto’s hand grabbed his. Shun didn’t look down at it. But he didn’t shrug it off, either.
“Shun.”
Yuto’s voice shook, and now Shun looked down at him. Another bomb exploded in the distance, illuminating his pale face. Yuto wasn’t easily shaken. Shun had watched him pick up spiders and lean a little too far over the side of observatory railings. He’d never seen anything other than the usual, laid-back smile on Yuto’s face. Not before this unexpected war.
But Yuto’s face was pale. And there were things in his eyes that Shun has never seen before, a fear that he’d never known Yuto to ever know. His mouth opened, and for a moment, it seemed as though his voice might break.
He closed his mouth again. The fear disappeared from his eyes – no, not disappeared. Only painted over.
“Be careful.”
Somehow Shun knew it would be the last time he ever saw Yuto vulnerable. And somehow, it hurt more than the pain in his ribs.
