Milwaukee Road caboose at Rondout, Illinois Photo by Sam Carlson Caption from flickr: “Grabbing orders in the time honored tradition! The conductor or else the rear brakeman is leaning out of the bay window and reaching for the orders. The orders are hard for us to see but in plain sight from the caboose. The train is southbound (railroad east.) The Tower is to the left, and the Operator is standing near the bottom of the stairs looking the train over. The signal is the order board. Behind it is the small platform and steps that the operator must climb in order to hang the orders. This is at Rondout, IL in March, 1986.”
